  1. I want to leave bedside nursing

I do 16 to 18k steps a day in my level 1 trauma ER and have anywhere from 6 to 20 patients over the course of the day. I don't think the ER is where you want to go if you are burned out. I loved hospice!
  2. Do pH nurses change their title to doctors?

In the clinical setting they are not called Doctor by patients and staff. In Academia setting everyone calls them Doctor. Its supposed to help differentiate between MD and non MDs for patients
  3. LVN adanced placement California

I did a pilot program at a cal state that let people test out of classes due to lvn experience. I wouldn't recommend it, a lot of the students passed their test but I think probably needed that review because a lot didn't pass nclex the first or sec...
  4. "Eat their young"

Personally when I am doing report with a new nurse and they don't give me all the information I want or need I ask them and then I tell them why I am asking. Cause ya know, teamwork. I'd only run off to the educator if it was a consistent problem.
  5. "My Nurses"

It actually bothers me more than you see me as a Doctor's property before thinking "hey maybe that means its that nurse is a trusted coworker." I know my Docs say "my" because its either a resident, np, or pa with them, or its because they know that ...
  6. Need the real truth. Are all EDs like this?

I work in a Level 1 Trauma Center, we are not union, and we are nothing like that. We are usually 3:1 sometimes 4:1 when we get slammed but one of those 4 is on the more minor side, doesn't need a lot of attention. But we always have float nurses aro...
  7. Trying to choose between 3 NP programs

I would do what is local. I've known too many people who have done distance NP programs who have had a hard time getting a preceptorship, or have gotten subpar ones because it was all they could find. They feel it really impacted their abilities to g...
  8. Difference between a BSN from a University VS. an Institute?

I went to a state school but I work with a bunch of nurses who went to West Coast, and I have to say I'm blown away by the new grads I've worked with. They knew their stuff, loved their program and have become great nurses. I watch the techs and CNAs...
  9. My NCLEX run

Big hugs, I cried the whole way home from LVN and my RN utterly convinced I had failed. I even had a breakdown during my RN nclex and had to pull myself back together. Thanks to the CA BRN I waited EIGHT DAYS to see my name online. EIGHT HORRIBLE DAY...
  10. Failed Nursing School

I would keep applying to ADN and look for good private nursing programs like Galen or West Coast. I can't believe they failed you for grads like that, that's nuts.
  11. Does CA Accept Excelsior Pre-reqs?

I did both of those labs online through South University and they were accepted by the board. I was however in their Allied Health AS program, I don't know if they do them separately and I would check again with the board because its notorious for ch...
  12. What is the Registered Nurse Patient Ratio at your hospital?

No, this is what my hospitals ratios are. And one of the reasons I'll never leave. Its probably why we have such a happy group, and amazing teamwork.
  13. MSN, $60-$75K, worth it?

Good advise, my friend did not look into this and got half way through a program when she ran out of financial aid and was forced to quit.
  14. What is the Registered Nurse Patient Ratio at your hospital?

Wow some of these are scary for me. We staff based on level of care. ER anywhere from 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, maybe 4:1 (all very basic if we're slammed and short, not common). Med surg is 4:1 or 3:1 Surgical and Intermediate trauma 3:1 Neuro 3:1 or 2:1...
  15. "I do the same thing as an RN"

Here is a great example! Charles Plumb was a US Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane as destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist V...
  16. Working FT and PRN in different dept. at the same hospital?

We have people do it, depends on the need.
  17. Dealing with a patient's suicide.

Big hugs OP. I'm going through something similar. I went to check on my patient and he had disconnected her IV and injected something into his port. I don't think he intentionally tried to kill himself but he did. I literally watched the life drain o...
  18. Unit Manager Demands I Cut My Hair

I love your hair from the picture. I hope you just wear an OR cap and I'm sorry that you are getting grief. I think its BS and crosses an ethical and maybe even racial line. In pony tails people still shed hair. I'd be pissed if I were you. I'm angry...
  19. Are test banks allowed if the professor doesn't use them

Its pretty rare for teachers to not use test banks. On the one hand there are thousands of questions in there so how much can it really help a student? Not much I would think. But its soooo not worth it. Too many stories about students getting caught...
  20. When should I start feeling like a nurse?

Its different for everyone and its normal to go back and forth. Hang in there!
  21. Concordia lvn to rn 30 unit option

Usually they are required to offer it, even if they don't do it. That's how it works in my state anyway. Its a joke.
  22. How did you get an A in anatomy?

There is a great coloring book on amazon, it sounds funny but I found it helpful and relaxing. Get in a study group. Make flash cards and look at them daily. Ask questions if you need too.
  23. LPN or RN

I was an LPN for 12 years. Get your RN. Not that being an LPN sucks. Its just that you make less, you get way less respect and your options are far more limited. An RN will open soooo many doors for you. I didn't even realize how much life would chan...
  24. Need help deciding between Trauma PCU and Neuro PCU, please help!

I felt like you, that I would be terrible at night shift. I hated it, I never slept well and I honestly had an emotional meltdown over it. I'm also a mom to 2 small kids which played a big role. If I heard them cry boom I was awake and done for. Co...
  25. Loma Linda University New Grad RN Pediatric Residency August 2016

LOL that's just the LLU way in general, but you won't find a more amazing group of nurses. Good luck everyone!
