  1. How many patients do you have on average?

    Between 4-6 patients usually.
  2. Extra Shifts.. are they worth it?

Nope, not to me anymore. When I first started out, I was more eager to pick up the extra shifts. But, the last few months have been hell on my floor. No aides, playing multiple roles. I am a charge nurse but one day I had to do charge/unit secretary ...
  3. Starting IVs

I actually don't mind the craziness of the floor I work on. But, there is one thing that brings me so much terror and it is starting IVs. I only started 3 so far and I have almost worked as a new nurse for a year. Two of those IV starts were under th...
  4. Postpartum questions!

Thanks for all the advice! I love the idea of gathering pamphlets and reading over them. Breastfeeding questions often pop up and it is hard for me to answer these questions.
  5. Postpartum questions!

Hello everyone. I work on a medical surgical unit. However, I have floated to postpartum here and there. I do enjoy floating to this unit. But, I feel somewhat inadequate and rusty on this specialty. This might be a unit that I would like to work som...
  6. Ped help!!

Hello everyone! I work on a medical surgical unit. However, our floor also takes pediatric patients. We have one nurse who usually always takes our peds when scheduled. When she is not there, usually our charge nurse takes the peds. Or, sometimes the...
  7. Ped help!!

Thanks so much for the advice! The suggestions have been great.
  8. Combative/Violent Confused Patients

I feel for you! I guess it has something to do with wanting a baby very much and if I ever were to fall pregnant and this happened to me, I would be pretty darn upset, too. I would have talked to my charge nurse and see if I could switch pts with som...
  9. Starting IVs

Thanks for the suggestions! I am still not great at IVs. But, since this post I started two more (22 g) and hopefully with time and practice I will get better.
  10. DCCC nursing program- starting this fall 2014!

Good luck to you. It is alot of work but it goes by fast and you will work super hard. But, it will be worth it. Many of the people in my class were married and/or had children. So, it is doable. Just give it your all and you will do it.
  11. From: PA Graduated May 2012 Passed NCLEX July 2012 Got a job offer June 2013 Started work August 2013 I went straight into an RN to BSN program so I only applied to jobs in state. COUNTLESS jobs. I only had 1 nursing interview. I started looking out ...
  12. Starting IVs

Thanks for the tips so far! I work on a crazy busy medsurg floor. So, I think that might be half the battle. When I inserted my 24 g, I was floating on a slower paced floor where I could actually relax and give it my all, lol. A former coworker told...
  13. I got a job !!!!!!!!!

Congrats!! It took a year to get my first nursing job and I had to move to the West coast, lol. But, I was willing and happy to take the leap. I am very jealous, though, because psych nursing is my dream field. I am in med surg.
  14. NY RNs to NM

I relocated to NM from the Northeast. The application process went pretty smoothly for me. It took about 2-3 weeks to get my NM license after everything was in. Just go onto the NM board of nursing website and print out their NM endorsement form and ...
  15. moving to Albuquerque

I don't really know too much about the ABQ area. But, my New Mexico license arrived pretty fast. 2 to 3 weeks.
  16. **POLL** New 1st Year RN Salary

    1) New Mexico 2) 20.something (I want to say 20.98) 3) New grad started in August '13 4) Med Surg
  17. Will I get a job?

I am not really sure what the outlook for PT jobs are. I would imagine that it would be easier to find an RN job because there are so many different areas of nursing to get into and more nurses may be needed than PTs in certain settings (for instance...
  18. Changing Specialities .. Psych to Medicine

Are you working at a stand alone psych facility? If you aren't having any luck, perhaps try applying for psychiatric nursing jobs in a psych unit of a hospital. This will help give in an "in" to a facility that offers other areas of nursing. You may ...
  19. Willing to move across country, help?

I relocated across country for a nursing job. It has been a great opportunity and I was happy to get a job offer. I recommend that you apply for a nursing license in whichever state you are interested in. I know that the licenses are pricey so you re...
  20. PCT on Mother/Baby unit

I have an interview coming up for a PCT on a Mother/Baby floor. What kind of questions do you think they will ask on the interview? Any PCTs have any interview advice? Any thing that I should ask the interviewer? Thank you so much!
  21. Licensure and applying out of state

I was having trouble finding anything in my home state, so I decided to look into other states. I did receive one call from an out of state hospital without having a license there. It is possible, but I think actually having a state license already w...
  22. Should I hold out for a hospital job?

I would have took (almost) anything when I was looking for a job. This is especially so because it was hard to find jobs around my area. I would take it until something else pops up. It is hard to tell when something else arises, but this will give y...
  23. I wished that I had PCT experience, too. I tried to find a position while in nursing school but couldn't get anything. I graduated nursing school in May 2012. But, I did not get my first nursing job until August 2013. I went straight into the RN to B...

20.98 for new grad in New Mexico.
  25. How soon did you get pulled?

About 3 months after starting the job. I have been pulled to ICU and pospartum. I actually prefer these floors to my own (medsurg) and get excited when I get to float, lol.
