  1. Only 2-3 in my class graduated with honors. I find it odd for everyone in a program to have honors. In a sister nursing program to mine, almost everybody had good grades; however, their NCLEX pass rate was less than 50%.

How fast do you run blood?

On the floor with a pump, usually about 90 minutes to 2 hrs. In surgery on gravity tubing, it's running wide open, so goes in as fast as the IV allows, usually 15-30 minutes unless emergent & a pressure bag is used.

    No Parking, Yes Problem!

Don't suppose there is a local TV station that would be interested in this situation? A little public outcry could go a long way.
  4. I've found too that a lot of staff are under the impression that insurance won't pay if pt leaves AMA. I used to do insurance billing. It comes down to if billing is submitted with appropriate coding, there won't even be a question of coverage. If...
  5. Most of my studying was limited to reviewing the power points. I reviewed them before lecture & looked up anything I wasn't already familiar with (14 yrs experience in healthcare setting at that time). Made notes in the margins during lecture &...
  6. At my facility, a no call/no show or calling off the last day puts you on the do not hire list (including all 14 of the parent organization's sites in 2 states). Are you certain you will never want to work for that facility again or any of its affil...

What was the age of your oldest surgical admit?

102 yoa, hip fracture; completely A&O; lived at home. She sailed thru surgery & PT; no issues.

    Waste of Insulin

Same here. There are little stickers in the pocket with the vial that we stick to the syringe so you have a barcode to still scan in the insulin at the bedside. Only issue I've ever really seen is that a lot of nurses won't enter how many units the...

    Nurses and bullies...

This reminds me of a time when a newish therapist requested (demanded in a rather snotty way) that my pt's Foley be removed & to DC the IVF. Um, no. Sorry it means you have to juggle a few more things when you ambulate, but I have specific orde...

    Case Study Paralytic Ileus

"...abdomen is rigid..." within 24 hrs of abdominal surgery leads me to think in a different direction which would account for the VS.

    New nurse assistant and terrified

This is completely normal! No one starts a new job in a new field knowing exactly what to do or doing it well. Everyone else seems to make it look easy because they've been doing it day in & day out for years. Give yourself a chance & in a...

    Dressing changes????

We also use Aquacel dressings which stay on for 7 days unless there is excessive drainage. Nursing changes the dressing if needed.

    Who assigns your patients?

We also just take turns & no one ever takes a 2nd pt if there is a nurse free, nor would we expect them to. It's unneccessary stress on the nurse & potentially unsafe. I second the notion of bringing this issue up in a staff meeting. We kee...
  14. Actually, this sounds similar to my program. We did not have separate classes for med-surg, pharmacology, etc. Rather, first semester was Nursing I, second semester Nursing II, etc. By doing this, we only had one area/subject to concentrate on at ...

I'm having doubts about nursing... :(

OP, it's been a week since your initial post. Curious how your 2nd clinical went?

General, Spinal, blocks, oh my 411 please

The meds used for the block are largely preference of the anesthesiologist. Most of ours use bupivicaine (Exparel) with maybe epinephrine & I know one that also adds dexamethasone. Really, I don't think you need to worry about exactly what was ...

I'm having doubts about nursing... :(

And sometimes (often? always?) the floor is short staffed with not enough aides OR your aid is floated to a unit even more short staffed than you are. Then guess what? You or another nurse is assigned to be the aide for that shift. (Some nurses w...

    Morphine & air hunger

Just looking for validation.... Pt with severe COPD scheduled for surgery to repair a fracture was on the floor. Sats all over the place; mostly 90's with venti but pt wouldn't leave it on & drop to 50-70's. Back on nasal cannula, pt would leav...

IL Dept of Financial & Progessional Regulation State of Illinois | Department of Financial & Professional Regulation However, you won't find your name listed until you have sent your fee & NCLEX results to them.

    Humalog

This can sometimes seem like a gray area & not everyone will agree on the best course. What does policy say? My facility policy is to hold short acting insulin if less than 50% of meal is consumed . This is part of a protocol order set which al...

    Evening shift versus nights

I would prefer 12 hr nights to 8 hr evening shifts. However, my ideal shift would be 12 hr evening, 1100-2300, which my facility offers a handful. Is that a possibility?
  22. I second the skillstat simulator. Was introduced to it in school & now, I revisit it every time I need to renew ACLS.

    WILTW-Summer Edition: What HAVEN'T I learned?

Ladyfree, it sounds like you have been super busy! Are there others to help you care for your mom? My oldest sister & I did most of the planning & caring for my mom in her last yr or so with some additional help at times from our 4 other si...

    WILTW-Summer Edition: What HAVEN'T I learned?

I've learned that I miss this thread! Where is everybody!? The eclipse this past week apparently had a similar effect to a full moon on a freaky Friday the 13th in October. And I'm talking about in outpt surgery. Nothing went smoothly. We had mu...

    To educate or not

My pet peeve is hearing someone say that poison ivy is contagious. I've gone round & round that argument with my husband...repeatedly. But at least he is a layperson. I've corrected coworkers when we had a child come thru with poison ivy rash ...
