I just wanted to throw in an update: I was just offered a school nurse position in my area! I am so excited. It's a big cut in pay, but I think it will be so worth it. It looks like I'll be in a somewhat rural area outside of medium sized city. I don't think the assignment has health aids, but it's only 2 schools. Is this going to make the job much harder? Thanks for all your great advice. I'm excited to learn this new area of nursing :)

The job postings say BSN preferred. I'm currently working on my BSN classes, so I'm hoping that will help. I think the kind of stress that you describe is preferred to the current stress of my job. I know it may not be perfect every day and it will be different kinds of stress, but I have a herniated disc (L4-L5) already, and I've been physically and verbally assaulted to my breaking point something really has to change

Thank you all for being so helpful! I looked into becoming a sub, but they require you to be on call for 2 shifts a week. I just can't do that and continue to work my job, or quit my job and only be a sub. It looks like I'd have to dive right into a full time position. I asked to see if it would be possible to do a shadow day, but haven't heard back.

Hi everyone. I'm writing this out of extreme frustration and pure burn out. I am a critical care float pool nurse. I've only been a nurse for a little over a year, but I am already burnt out from getting dumped on by the ICU and ER. I have learned so much, and I'm very grateful for the opportunities I've been given, but I am in desperate need of a change. In total, I've worked in emergency services as an EMT and ER tech for 6 years, and a CC RN for 1 year. I was essentially burnt our before I even became an RN. Right now I'm working on my BSN and taking a community health class. I am in love with the goal of keeping people out of acute care, and in particular, I love working with kids when I'm in the ER. I think school nursing may be my dream job. Can you experienced nurses lend me some advice? Where do I start and what education will I need? What is a typical day like and what are the responsibilities? What do you do during the summer to support your income? I'm in Oregon.

That would be awesome. I am interested in a head start for sure! I have my CPR but it expires this time next year so I don't know if they'll want me to renew it now or next summer. I think I'll start doing that stuff after orientation so they can explain it and answer questions. I just can't wait for the 20th to come now!!! I want to get books ASAP so I can start reading up. Do you know anything about dosage calc quizzes? I know some programs want you to pass one of those within the first month or so.

Hi everyone! Hope we'll be hearing back soon!! I wanted to make a post about a note taking software I just started playing with that I LOVE. It's called Evernote and it's free and you can use it on any device (Android, iOS, web) It's a really nice way to organize photos, notes, youtube vids, etc. in folders and add in your profs (or your own) audio recordings. It also makes your notes really easy to share since you can always have your copy and share to others if they ask. Okay, done raving about it . Thought I'd share because it seems like it would be really helpful for school!

You may want to consider holding off and waiting for Spring 2015 since you would be starting nursing school with way more stress with the situation you described. Ultimately you're choice, but if it were me I'd try to save money up and wait to try to get into my preferred school.

AmyRN that's terrible! I'm assuming you were told that they were 20-somethings? Sorry to hear and hope you get into your specialty in the future. I understand 20-somethings get a bad rep with high turnover and inexperience, but I don't think it's fair to think of all of them as immature and flippant. I am 22 and have been working in healthcare directly with pts for about 5 years and worked before that in high school. When I have my RN I'll have 7 years in healthcare prior. I have learned a TON and realize there is still so much to learn. If anything, I think being young starting out is very tough because the general attitude (as seen in this thread) is negative towards us. I can not tell you how many times people have bullied me/ not taken me serious until I open my mouth and show them what I know and put them in their place. There is a lot of proving yourself that older people getting into it don't really have to go through as much. Be thankful you weren't taken seriously in retail jobs in your 20's and not a job that is life or death! I have to add, though; I find it funny when older people come around after I've been at a job for a while and the first month they start acting like they've been there forever and treat people senior to them disrespectfully in front of pts because they are younger and "look" like they know less. No one should say someone can't do a job because of age, period. Not everyone has the same life path and that's OKAY :)

Does anyone know what the typical schedule is like for a student only working on NU classes?? According to the website it will be between 8-10 credits/semester, but anyone know what time of day and how many days a week? My work schedule will be weekend night shift so I'm wondering if I'll be able to fit in a mini weekend sometime during the week so I can read/study and then go to classes like 2-3 days in the week.

Good question. I'm not sure, but I would definitely call and ask! If there is I wish I knew last year!! haha

Yay! Only about 2 more weeks then?? Em843- I'm not sure about a deposit but last year the letter came with a form to fill out to either accept/decline the offer. If you didn't submit it by May 24th you lost your spot. I'm sure you would also lose your spot if you didn't submit payment, but I never got that far with it last year. Hope that helps somewhat!

*Update* Got an interview at a different hospital ED and got an offer on the spot! Just thought I'd update for anyone who may read this in the future and want encouragement to keep trying :)

Very true. I have been accepted to BSN and ASN programs and I just personally would like to keep my job while in school as it was difficult for me to get (and is in the department I want to work in when I get my RN). I am young and unmarried with no children so I would have time, but school expenses would be a burden on my family. We all have to choose the best option for our situation! Different strokes for different folks :) Best wishes in your school and career goals, and most of all, congrats!

I don't think an ASN is a waste of time, especially if you're smart with your time. Getting experience in a facility you would like to work after your first semester (you'll be a CNA) is easier when you're taking ~9 nursing credits/semester as opposed to 15-17. That gets your foot in to door for a possible job upon graduation. Additionally, if you land a job in a hospital during nursing school they will pay for you to get your BSN! And you can do it online! So much cheaper and less stressful and only takes one year longer For me, MC is a better option because I can keep working full time nights at my hospital while doing nursing school part time. I used to feel in a rush to get school done ASAP, not anymore.

Husky-They said the same time frame last year and I think I found out ~May 14th. I guess late May/early June is worst case scenario. I think you sound like a solid candidate! Depends on all the applications though so that's what makes this nervewracking!!!

I really don't think it's first come first serve. I think they just look at all the qualified people who applied and take the most qualified till however many they can put in the class. If the applicant pool is relatively low scores/ gpa then chances will be higher to get in, but if there are lots of very qualified people it might be more competitive. You never know, but lets keep our fingers crossed!
