    Different shifts in the ED

I love nights So MUCH! When my kids say "I have a thing at school, can you come?" the answer is always "yes!" (2 elementary kids, husband home at night and family is out during

VENT: Shock at ER visit cost

You beat me to it! I went looking for a comment section on the article to say exactly this. Also, article said this on the side panel: "Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles charges Medicare an...

    I ignored my instincts...

In work related situations I can be like iron and hold my ground very well, but in social situations I have a deep and serious phobia that I might put my foot in my mouth, for example company picnics...

    sunlight and nightshift

I sleep under a shady tree in a hammock in my back yard on nice days. It's unbelievably
  6. No, it's not your fault. Assessing and interventions are the nurse's job. Your job is to get and enter info and let the nurse know the family is concerned. When the family asked for a different...

    Welcoming and Involving New Hires

I suggest to have a blank lab sticker on the back of their badge with frequently called extension #s (pharmacy, lab, CDU, radiology, whatever). Then I show them mine. :) Saves a LOT of time looking...

    Best/Worst list of Emergency Nursing

Best: Being thanked by a previously critical patient. Worst: miscarriages and crying moms... then having to do the ppwork with them about

My orientee gave the wrong narcotic

She is a nurse? Or medication trained aide? Then it is her own write up. At the time of the med error you need to show her the report protocols so she can tell the MD it happened and get orders....

Do you tell people where you work?

I agree with netglow and pedilove. I don't volunteer, but I don't lie about it either. I always cringe when people ask where I work because I don't want to look at rashes or hear about their family's...

    Comic relief...

I stand by my statement. Any new nurse will occasionally get flustered when they have put their foot in her mouth. OP was laughing at her own foot-in-mouth

    What's the inside scoop?

Where I work (32 beds): -Just be willing to help and learn. -Do not afraid to say "I didn't know that." -Stand back if there's a lot going on, and say "what can I help with?" It'll prob be VS and...

    Comic relief...

First off, this is something that happened in the past (as evidenced by her "Back when I was a GN...") Secondly, what made this adorable was that she was naive and new to nursing. Thirdly, I have...

    12 hour shift question

Have a friend who smashes 2 weeks together at a time. 6 night shifts in a row across his "on" weekends then 8 nights off. I don't know how he does it because it'd kill me. After the third 12 hour...

    URGENT HELP

Well think about it. WHY are they not maintaining their health? Are they too depressed to care or are they physical incapable of doing it because of a limitation? One is psychosocial and the other...

    IV "wide open" ??

In emergency room just about everyone gets a 1000 ml wide open bonus unless they are dialysis, chf, etc. Our smallest gauge we'll open up on is a 20. MDs generally don't know the IV size vs rates....
