I thought people wore longsleeves to have less of their skin exposed to the "joys" of healthcare work ;-) I would, except I am always hot. Darn Florida weather ;-)

  9. How do you arrange day care when you work 12 hr shifts?

Hubby works days, I work nights to solve the daycare crisis. I work 3 days a week, he works 4 and we only have an issue two nights a week for an hour. My brother or mother will sit with the kids until he gets home from work so that I can get to work...
  10. How Many Patients Do Your Monitor Tech's Watch?

Each monitored unit used to have it's own monitor tech. Our monitor tech watched our 24 beds. Then administration had the bright idea to reduce the number of monitor techs by combining monitor stations. Our monitor tech now monitors two additional un...
  11. Tattoo's and nurses

Keep them hidden. Its unprofessional if they show in my opinion. By the way, I have two.
  12. I am a huge fan of moving to computers. Our system goes back three years at this point. So I get a name of a patient coming up from the ED. I can read old H&Ps, consults, progress notes, cath lab reports, labs, ct scans, etc etc. I'm more prepare...

My best friend has a 4 yr old daughter with cerebal palsy. She has a very functional form. She walks, talks, plays, and does all the things other children do. She goes to physical therapy and occupational therapy three days a week. For a short time s...
  14. Getting report from the ED

At my hospital, we have done away with telephone report for ED admits. In the past few months it was moved to computerized report; this is a non-permanent portion of the chart where the ED nurse types a note to the nurse accepting the pt. I get reall...
  15. BSN/MSN question

State schools are much cheaper. Not to mention they are typically accredited by the NLN. Many of them offer RN to MSN programs. I know of at least 2 in my state. My advice, check out state schools in Cali.
  16. At my hospital, I have to say they are good about moving a pt to ICU when things take a turn for the worse. Our problem is sending inappropriate ED pts to my floor (PCU) that should have gone to ICU. Also, med-surge pts that have a rapid response cal...

    I agree with Tweety!
  18. Medi-Tech anyone?

Thumbs down to meditech. Reminds me of a DOS based program. I really like Sunrise XA, Windows based and very user friendly. These are the only two programs I've used in the hospital setting.
  19. Will LPN's ever be utilized the way they used to be?

They take full teams the same as the RNs do. As far as I know, the only difference is that the RNs push their IV meds. We work well together. The floor I work on doesn't have all the cattiness I hear about on here and from other nurses.
  20. Will LPN's ever be utilized the way they used to be?

I work at a level 1 trauma center and teaching hospital that hires LPNs.
  21. teaching hospital/residents vs traditional

I too love working at a teaching hospital. Typically, the residents answers calls quickly and will come to the floor if need be. As others have said, they are open to suggestions and don't blow you off. They also give rationales for their orders, whi...
  22. Why oh why

Why do the majority of confused patients end up naked? You walk into the room, and there they are, sans clothes. I just don't get it
  23. Discharge Planning and CHF

Pts have the right to refuse a foley or anything else. You can measure output with a urinal. It seems they acted appropriately by convincing him that a foley was needed the next day when his output was not optimal. A bladder scan would have told them...
