  1. At the school I attended our instructors worked hard to ensure that every semester was a nightmare. No joke. To the point that just reading these student threads on allnurses brings it all back, making me hyperventilate and break out in hives. Exc...
  2. Family in or out during procedures???

I'm a new grad RN still working on figuring this one out... I oriented with one RN who was great about having family leave for anything that would expose the patient. She was tactful, yet firm. Another RN I oriented with had an anything goes attitu...
  3. How do you become a Moderator for this site??

There are times though when the political correctness of it all can be a little frustrating, you almost feel like: "How about if you just write what you want me to say and I'll post it ???" The medstudent site isn't moderated quite so heavily and I ...
  4. Anyone else doing the midnight creep???

Yeah, that's normal. My husband and I both do shift work and are usually up for 1-2 hours after we get home. Right now I'm off at 11:30 and get into bed around 1. He's off at 3 and hits the bed about 4-4:30. You usually need some unwind time.
  5. DON said mean things about me...which I overheard.

Totally unprofessional. I cannot stand bosses who bad mouth their employees to other employees. It's a huge pet peeve of mine, I think it bodes extremely unwell for all when someone like that is in power. Unfortunately, this kind of badmouthing (at l...
  6. grrrrrrrrrr.........

I actually feel sorry for the nurse here. Hmm. I'm gonna need a minute to digest this one and figure out exactly why. I'll get back to you.
  7. What do experienced nurses expect from new nurses?

I thought as a new nurse I had to be able to handle ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Talk about scary. In our last semester an instructor told us to always remember that we are not an island, that there is a world of help around us. I remember when it rea...
  8. I'm a new grad RN on a med-surg floor in orientation. It's a smaller hospital so we get a variety of cases from shift to shift on the one unit. Mental health, oncology, general surgery, ortho, medical cases, etc... What do you think is a reasonab...
  9. New Grad to Fully Functioning RN - How long?

They're 8 hour work days, we had 3 days of classroom orientation. I did get 4 weeks full time precepting as a nursing student back in May at the same facility... maybe they're counting that too, I'm not sure. The lack of breaks are my least concern...
  10. Does this sound like a good orientation?

You're being offered a good deal. There's nothing wrong with the hospital for offering it, hospitals throughout the nation offer to pay tuition in exchange for a certain number of years of service. Nurses are needed and hospitals are always recruit...
  11. Top hospitals in the "Gorge" area????

Mid Columbia Medical Center (MCMC) in The Dalles OR hands down. It's an awesome facility, the regional medical center for the gorge. Do some research on the planetree philosophy of healing. It was started in one unit of one hospital in California....
  12. petty ? about med student

When I was a 1st year RN student I was assigned to a pt with a CT, foley, g-tube, oxygen, IV, and epidural. It was a challenging pt for me. When he had to get up I went to the nurse's station to ask about the protocol for this patient. 2 person as...
  13. Stuff Patients Have Smuggled onto the Psych Unit...

Police bring suicidal pt into the ER. Per protocol, pt was searched before being placed in the back of the police car. Well we're all human and things can get missed, especially I suppose if the patient's fighting you every step of the way... A nu...
  14. As a new grad RN I worship the lab. They nicely answer all my stupid questions (more than once), and whenever I have to help them with a draw they talk me through it so I don't screw it up. I only wish they started IVs.
  15. just venting. (long)

How are these med errors? You had patients REFUSING to take their meds. All people have free will. It's actually to your credit that you perservered through the hysteria and overcame it. I'm surprised you don't deal with situations like this more...
  16. Quadriplegia Question

I'm a new grad RN working on a case study for an internship. The patient in the fictional case study is a quadriplegic presenting to the ED with multiple sxs, one of which is LUQ pain. Forgive me for what is likely a stupid question.... Are quadrip...
  17. Quadriplegia Question

Good question, it doesn't specify. I'm assuming then that a complete injury will = not able to feel visceral pain, and an incomplete injury would leave open the possibility?
  18. Are you satisfied with your first RN Job?

Tim, Thanks so much for your above 'advice' post. I'm a new grad, fresh into my first med-surg position, and it was a huge help. Much appreciated!
  19. Are you mistaken for a jet setting flight attendant?

Gee... thanks. On the upside, soon you'll be so loaded down with stress... assignments, care plans, skills lab, clinicals, exams, papers to write, group projects, NCLEX prep... that your little rolling backpack, and what 50 unimportant strangers th...
  20. First day on the floor

It's actually reassuring to hear how nervous everyone is, I know I'm not alone! I start tomorrow and worry I'm going to be totally inept...
  21. RN in correctional facilities any feedbacks

    Why not?
  22. Where should I fit in MY life?

That's a pretty personal question... meaning everyone will have a different answer based on their situation. My opinion on the matter doesn't mean a whole lot to whatever your situation is, but since you asked I'll give it. Assuming I'm young, newl...
  23. Breech of ethics

I'm an RN student one month away from graduation. Very recently a classmate of mine told me that while in clinical they have done the following: They're in a patient's room with morning meds. The patient refuses a med, saying they just don't want t...
  24. Police Killed Our Patient

I asked a few pages back for RNs to identify the specific tactics they use to safely deal with a mental patient and subdue the type of situation the police face. I'm still waiting. I'm beginning to think that everyone who is so sure the police are ...
  25. Police Killed Our Patient

Obviously psych nurses do not use tasers to subdue their patients having a mental break. So what tools do you use?
