  1. Working in SLC healthcare as a non-LDS??

When I worked at Huntsman Cancer Center, the majority of my co-workers weren't LDS. I am, but I think that the manager was very fair and that the University Hospital was a great organization to work for.
  2. Dominion, NVMHI, & St. Elizabeths Psychiatric Hospitals

In my own opinion, HCA is not a great organization to work for. I've transitioned to Bon Secours and they're awesome.
  3. Dear Pysch Nurses

I was one of two people in my class of 90 students that loves psych! The look is pretty common, but like others have said, it's followed by, "wow! I could never do that!"
  4. Child Psych? Your opinions...

I currently only have experience in acute adult pscyh and geropsych. However, an awesome opportunity just opened up at the nearby teaching hospital for a 23 bed acute child and adolescent psych unit. Who has worked in child psych previously and did...
  5. If you got frisked...

Keys, pen, sharpies, highlighter, pen-light, clip-board with notes. That's it!
  6. Child Psych? Your opinions...

I've asked the nurse manager if I could come see the unit, and I've turned my application in so I'm hoping to hear back from her soon! I think the unit is mostly adolescents. My husband has seen the unit (he's in med school, interested in psychiatr...
  7. Fired....What now?

A resume isn't a legal document, so you can leave it off it you want to. On your future job applications, however, you are legally required to list that job.
  8. Med errors: subpoena, copy of incident report

Hey, don't freak out. Maybe this nurse is required to fill out these incident reports. I used to work in a nursing home/rehab facility and was required to fill out incident reports for every skin tear and bruise I found. And I found a lot - and fi...
  9. And remember that there are medical psych floors out there. They do exist :)
  10. Should I settle for a job I'm not happy with?

I agree that there are better jobs out there than working in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, but you may have to take one of these jobs first. A lot of hospital jobs require you to have experience as an RN. I experienced this right ou...
  11. Night Shift For Newbies

The night before I work I go to sleep at a normal time (like 2300 or 2330) and then sleep in as late as I can the day I work. Then the whole day that I work, I just stay up and sleep when I get home. It is pulling a whole 24 hours sometimes, but I'...
  12. I really, really, really need some advice guys. I'm very, very frustrated with the people I work with. The actual patient load is great, and I love this kind of nursing. But the people...ugh. Let me tell you. The unit manager (UM) is supposed to...
  13. Please help me! Serious issues with my unit!

Thanks for your advice. I just got this job a couple months ago and really don't want to go through the whole job search again. Hopefully it will get better!
  14. Please help me! Serious issues with my unit!

We do taped report and the nurses leave while we're listening, so I don't know they've left until I come out of the room with the recorder. I've spoken with almost all of my coworkers, and they all agree that something needs to be done, but they don...
  15. What's your nursing kryptonite?

This totally reminded me - we had to pack this poor woman's vagina after hysterectomy and that was the most AWFUL smell ever! Good thing she had her legs bent up so she couldn't see my face!
  16. What's your nursing kryptonite?

It's strange, but I also HATE the flaky skin that flies in the air when you take off someone's ted hose. I hold my breath until I can stand up to get away from the cloud! Also, dentures. Gag me now, I cannot stand the saliva and old food dripping ...
  17. Drug Seeking Patients

Just a quick question - I currently have a LOT of drug seeking pts on my inpatient psych unit. I'm very new at this (only been here for a month) and was just wondering how you all handle drug seeking pts who are just sweet as sugar when they want so...
  18. Drug Seeking Patients

Thank you!!! I have such a hard time with this. Need to work on that. Eventually I'll be one dang good psych nurse thanks to all your comments!
  19. Drug Seeking Patients

Love the two tips at the top!!! And no, you're not crazy! All patients have a right to medication that works for them. I have decided that just because someone is in the hospital for psychosis doesn't mean that they don't know that Risperdal does...
  20. Religion in the Room

If you're not comfortable, let the pt know that you'll find someone to pray with them. You'll be able to ask one of your co-workers to pray with your pt.
  21. Religion in the Room

As a nurse, you want to provide as holistic care as possible. If a pt asks you to pray with them, and you're comfortable doing that, then by all means - do it! It will help them and you develop a more therapeutic relationship. I've prayed with sev...
  22. Unlicensed caregiver?!?!

I got my CNA while in high school and it was essentially free. My classmates who weren't in high school paid only a couple hundred dollars for the whole course. It's not a long course either, but I don't live in Mississippi, so I'm not sure of what...
  23. How to stay safe fulfilling 2 week notice

Just be super professional about it. I was in essentially the exact same situation as you, and found my dream job in inpt psych. I waited to give my two weeks until I knew when I would start the new job, and just wrote a letter to my DON and nurse ...
  24. Pre-printed MARs

I believe they should be crossed off. You're just creating problems for yourself later on, because if your MARS are anything like some places I've seen, nurses will just sign off on the medication and give it even though it was supposed to be DC'd. ...
