  1. Tonight's my volunteer shift on the postpartum & newborns unit at the local medical center. I'm wondering what are your experiences, as nurses, working with volunteers? Are they really really helpful, or can they be more trouble than they're wort...
  2. Mom really wants me to move back to Boston, of course, so I'm looking at direct entry Masters programs. Anyone want to weigh in on these two? I don't think there are any other options in Boston, are there?
  3. twice this week, I've mentioned to acquaintences of mine that I plan to get into nursing, and the reponse has been a joking "Don't you have to be gay to do that?" sort of response. Does that stereotype actually still exist? Sheesh. I'll have to let...
  4. I just got my rejection letter from UCSF for the MEPN program. It was the only place I applied, because it's really the only place that's got a program that I'm interested in. I'll try again next year, but now I'm trying to figure out what I'll do ov...
  5. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Wow! You guys are just firing on all cylinders! Congrats to all of you! I just talked to the husband of our new Bishop, and I'm going to be applying for a year-long Certificate in Theological Studies at an Episcopalian Seminary in Berkeley, CA. Heck,...
  6. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Congrats to those of you with the Right Kind of letters! So, for the next year until I reapply to UCSF, I'm going to do a Certificate in Theological Studies, because I might wind up going to seminary in a few years!
  7. I suppose so. In general, it seems odd to me that there isn't a more powerful national representative body in nursing. It's exactly the sort of field that needs it. Oh well, another thing for me to learn.
  8. This does raise a point or two: Moderators: I looked through the ToS and didn't see anything that talked specifically about quoting or use of posted content by media. Is there one? Should there be one? Nurses: personal opinions about the death penal...
  9. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Thanks Jess, Oh, and it's my Birthday on Sunday!:balloons::biggringi:balloons:
  10. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

OK, I just popped home to check the mail. There was a letter from UCSF! But it was a No, so it looks like I start working on other plans for the next year and apply again in the fall. *shrug* I reckon I'll start this evening off with a :beercuphe
  11. It's a public forum, so yes, generally. If this encourages people to be more responsible with what they write, then I think that's probably commendable. And, in another note, whether a nurse believes in the death penalty or not, it's still a violatio...
  12. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Just called UCSF. The letters went out thursday and friday, with a few on monday. She couldn't tell me my *personal* status over the phone. Wouldn't be right. Call back if I don't get it by next tuesday. I'll be frank with you all, this was a terrib...
  13. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

*sigh* still nothing in the mailbox from UCSF. I could have *driven* down to pick up a letter at this point. Hmph.
  14. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Wife just called from home: STILL NO LETTER. I am going to kick the letter carrier so hard in the shins if a letter doesn't arrive tomorrow. Doesn't UCSF know I'm on msn messenger most of the day? They could just IM me!
  15. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

That's great news, Seahorse! You're in to a program at least! Hooray! -Chris, Still Waiting For The Mail
  16. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Congratualations! My wife and I didn't exactly elope, but we had only our immediate families and a handful of friends at ours. 12 guests altogether. My good friend Devin was the Deacon (his last job at our cathedral before going back to Massachusetts...
  17. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Not for me. I'm an out-of-state student coming down from Seattle. I get the $12,000 extra tab! Part of me thinks that even if I do get in this year, I'll spend a year establishing residency down there and try again. Hmph.
  18. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Just got home. No mail from UCSF today. /me kicks the Post Office in the shins. Anyway, how on earth am I going to pay for $35,000 tuition if I get in?
  19. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

I'm sorry, seahorse. Still, stiff upper lip. You've come a long way, done a lot, and there's still hope! Your family and friends better be supportive of you or we'll all give them a talking to.
  20. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Oh Lord, why did I have to check this forum tonight? Now I know that UCSF letters have been sent out and I have to bite my nails until they arrive. With regard to the Boston area schools, I was looking at Northeastern and BC, and when I visited the c...
  21. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

I graduated in '95. Porter College. History.
  22. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

It's just waiting, now, for UCSF to get back to me one way or another. I think if I don't go this year I'll try to do a year's training in Clinical Pastoral Education (which is essentially training as a hospital chaplain) if I can get in (all the sem...
  23. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

I'm still waiting to hear back from UCSF. I was a finalist, and to echo the sentiments posted here, a lot of what got me the interview seemed to be volunteer experience. Now, the big question is, if I'm accepted, I ask if I can defer for a year, sin...
  24. Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Thanks Hopegirl. I'm nervous, of course, about how I'd pay for it, but I'll worry about that after I find out if I'm accepted or not. And by the way, I was down in San Diego last week for my honeymoon! It's a great city.
  25. interview help?

Hey, I was selected as a finalist too! You going to be there 1/14?
