Being called in to work extra.. ALL. THE. TIME!

If I am sleeping after a night shift my phone is on do not disturb and only certain people can call and not go directly to voicemail. However right now when they call it's usually not for more hours but to tell you to stay home for the day.

    Pseudo Seizures

Our procedure for a pseudo is to call a condition which is similar to calling 911. The only time we don't is if it is part of a patients individual care plan. We have one that as long as no oblivious injuries and we do not think there was any potent...

    Pseudo Seizures

Not a school nurse, but on our psych unit we see two types of these... True psuedoseizures where we cannot tell if it's a real seizure or no and someone who is faking. Most of the true ones are caused from anxiety.

How many days do you work in a row?

I typically work 3-4 in a row then have a day off. But have done longer stretches. My ADHD gets the best of me after 4 though so they try to limit my stretches as much as possible.

High amounts of flatulence in Psych

Our unit can be pretty odiferous. We freak pharmacy out at times when we get a unit wide order for gas-x. We often carry around a bottle of biological odor eliminator. I don't know if it's any worse than other units just more noticeable because th...

Psych nurses being forced to float to med surg and tele?

Forced to float.... No. However there are a group of nurses on my unit, I'm one of them, who requested to be trained on the medical side because of staffing reasons. I have to pay my bills, I want to be able to take my planned vacations. We were g...

    Tattoos in Nursing

My tattoo is covered for work and my next one will be too. My coworkers is not and the patients love to talk to her about what it means. Most of my patients are tattooed, usually heavily.

Nurses With AD/HD: What's Your Story?

My ad/hd is primarily inattentive. When does it affect me... when I have 4 admits hit the floor at the same time. When I am being pulled in 50 directions at once. Its my antisocial traits that cause the issues with professionalism at times. I wor...

How do you help your suicidal patients?

My next question is always What is your plan.... If it's to shoot self and no access to guns alert level drops a tad bit, if it's see that over there, I can break it and use it to slice my wrist open, yeah that person is told must stay in common area...
  12. We don't do benzos for opiate withdrawal either. We have separate assessment scales based on what the pt is coming off of. The only times the assessment score comes into play is 10 or above for Ativan for etoh/benzos withdrawal or above 6 for clonid...
  13. The only time I have issues believing they need is when their subjective report does not match at all with the objective: n/v but eating full meals, covered in sweat (per pt) but clothing dry, palms dry, no sweat on brow, highly anxious but sitting ...

    Forced IM meds...always ethical??

The patients I have had on a meds/objection plan or in an emergent situation have the right to take the po meds vs the shot up until I have actually put the needle into their muscle.

    nurse-pt ratio

Our overall staff: patient is 1:4, minimum staff is 3 to make sure there are always 2 staff on the floor at all times. We usually staff 2 nurses per shift so we could have 4 nurses for 16 pts or 2 nurses 2 therapists or 3 nurses one therapist. We a...
  17. I have had male patients refuse to abide by rules/ redirections (psych) because it was an all female staff working. I believe the quote was I am a grown *** man I am not listening to a woman.

So how exactly do you chart this?

Oh I forget how I wrote it but it was similar to that. A few minutes later he looked at the therapist and said she's mean and then stuck his tongue out at me. Love our geris sometimes.

So how exactly do you chart this?

Elderly male patient, was just joking with staff in hallway. Therapist doing checks. Look up from nurses to station when I hear therapist calling patients name repeatedly. See the look of fear in therapist eyes. Rush out of nursing station ready ...

    Patient Population?

Actually I don't have that much patience. Just a lot of friends and family with addiction issues and they can usually tell. I was leading recovery group and had a patient ask if I was in recovery too just because how I could relate. As for antisoci...

  23. Mandychelle79

Be honest, what pt behaviors do you find annoying?

When rating my pain I usually tell them it is worse than my natural child birth ( gall bladder, id rate childbirth a 5 maybe 6, gall bladder was a 7 with times of 9)
