  1. Question about PRN meds

MJB, I'm talking about PRN meds.
  2. What's your favorite lip product for work?

Burt's Bees lip balm is the best! It keeps my lips really moist, and lasts forever.
  3. 2010 LPN/LVN hourly wage

New grad in LTC: $25.80/hour + $1.10 shift differential. I'm in Ontario, Canada
  4. A question about specimens...

There was a program here (Canada), where people could send in their stool samples by mail to check for occult blood. It was part of a colon cancer screening program. So I don't think stool samples need to be sent in right away!
  5. Primary household earner?

My husband make about the same as I do. I have a way better insurance plan however. We definitely need both incomes to live comfortably.
  6. I'm a new grad LPN, and the other day, a resident where I work required a fleet enema. I have never done one yet (only on the mannequins at school ). The CNA there offered to show me how to do it. Which brings me to this question: Are nurses "allowe...
  7. Being trained by CNA to do procedures

I was lucky to have been able to do everything else (Foleys, NG tubes, trach care, etc.) But for some reason, I have never had a patient requiring an enema. I know it's not rocket science, but since I have never done one, I would like some guidance d...
  8. Being trained by CNA to do procedures

This is why I put "education" in quotations....I didn't mean they knew less than me about certain things. All I'm asking is if this is legal? I have no problem at all with asking some of the CNAs for their help/opinion, etc.
  9. CPNRE sept 15, 2010

I'm still waiting!! Better come today, I don't want to wait all weekend!! Congrats to all who passed!
  10. Nitro spray question

Hi! I can't find the answer to this question: Why can we not shake Nitro spray before administering? I did this by mistake and was told not to, but no one was able to tell me the reason. Thanks!
  11. Nitro spray question

Wow, that's crazy!! I'll never shake it again! lol
  12. Nitro spray question

OK, but I always prime it first, as it says to do....so wouldn't the dose sprayed end up being correct?
  13. My vent.

You're not alone. I thought I was the only one who has cried in the oxygen closet! I just tell myself the shift WILL come to an end, and I can only do my best. But there are days where I feel like walking out the door in the middle of my shift!
  14. Refusing unsafe workload?

I'm a new grad working in a nursing home. On nights, I have 120 residents under my care (with 4 CNAs). I can manage this relatively well on most nights. However, last night, I had 3 palliative residents (highly unusual), and I was asked to pick up an...
  15. Refusing unsafe workload?

Thanks for your replies. I'm currently looking for another job while working here. Which sucks, because the pay is good, the benefits and pension plan are even better.... I like the job itself, but obviously feel quite unsafe at times with the patien...
  16. Refusing unsafe workload?

"Are you kidding, I would not have taken 120 by myself. Do you have any LPN's helping? The meds alone would be too much. How can you know about each resident? :(" Just to be clear, the shift is from 2300 to 0700. I think only a total of 10 reside...
  17. Refusing unsafe workload?

I know!! My usual load is around 120 residents, and while manageable, I normally do not have any breaks. It can get crazy! PS This is at the most reputable, government funded nursing home in my city.
  18. How to find a Dr's office job

I'm a new grad, and would love to work in a doctor's office or clinic. Is it acceptable to send resumes to these offices, even if there are no jobs advertised?
  19. How to find a Dr's office job

Thanks for your reply Amber. I think I will stick it out where I am now for a while, as I know I get paid well. It's unfortunate that Dr's office jobs tend to pay less. I will be keeping an eye out for one though! Also, did you learn phlebotomy on th...
  20. It seems that when I'm giving injections, whether IM or SC, I have a hard time piercing the skin. I hate having to "poke" a few times, as I can imagine it's unpleasant. I feel bad about this. It can't be possible that everyone has "tough" skin. Maybe...
  21. to any/all fellow nurses--please help! :)

It doesn't sound as though things are going to get better. I would start looking for another job ASAP. Any other nursing job. This place sounds ridiculous.
  22. Really depressed about new LTC job

Dukesgal: I read your post and I feel the exact same way as you. I'm a month into my LTC job, and while at times I find it overwhelming (I work nights, have 130 residents!!!), I view this as a time to gain experience and develop independence. I don't...
  23. How to find a Dr's office job

Thanks for your reply! I'm gonna go for it!
  24. I'm a new grad (LVN, or RPN here in Canada) , and I was hired at a LTC facility. The money is pretty good, but the responsibilities are pretty vast. I work full time night shift and I have 140 residents. Yes 140! Most of them sleep all night, but w...
  25. How to get phlebotomy experience

Thanks for the replies! And Chinook, I never thought of looking into Blood Services! I certainly will! :)
