  1. I got a bump in my pay for being a CNA, granted it was a small bump but it was something.

    Fair Patient assignments

We do it by patient acuity. However I often felt shafted because the patient that is quiet all night can turn into a night mare when the sun rises and vice versa.

    Per diem policy question

At my hospital they determine census and staffing needs q 4 hrs. So you can be cancelled at 3 different times during your shift.
  4. I have learned the importance of second opinions.
  5. I get wanting to be close to family. I love mine and it was extremely hard when I lived half way across the country. I was in a similar situation. I wanted to get the heck off of my floor so I applied for a ICU job and got it. I ended up declining t...
  6. You just taught me something. On my floor no one wears eye protection. In fact the only thing that has eye protection is a full face mask, we don't have separate glasses/ goggles. Is it the norm to wear eye protection to flush? To the OP: This will ...

    Shafted on Thanksgiving

I think on major holidays they should not be allowed to force someone off.

Does it matter where you got your BSN from?

At my hospital, we all talk about our schools. We have lots of students who come in for clinicals and well lets just say that there are some schools that I would not hire a nurse from. So it all depends on your area.

    compliance with hand hygien

A huge thing for me is to provide quality hand gel and lotion. By the end of the day the cheap stuff leaves my hands bleeding. I love cal stat.

Questions about Colorado new RN residency

I moved out to CO as a new grad. It is extremely competitive to get into a residency program. I recommend expanding your search to include all hospitals and specialities. Denver/ Aurora is a great place to live. Good Luck!

    How much should I get?

    That is insulting!

    Taking pain medications while working?

No and it scares me that you would even ask.
  15. we have them all over the hospital. By every elevator, exit and high traffic area. I am sure they are also in the med rooms. I guess I am used to big brother because I don't mind. It actually helped out the staff. We had a former pt that was stalki...
  16. Put your mouth here and suck on it. -For an incentive spirometer.

Number of patients you care for?

I work ortho. We have a RN to pt ratio of 5:1. On an average shift I have 3 admits and discharges. So usually a total of 8 pts a shift. Some days more, some less. I think 4:1 would be ideal for my floor. It is just down right dangerous to have 5 fre...

    Please Help my narcotic situation

Why are they not fixing the fx? He would feel much better after the surgery. I think it would help if they went back to the Oxycontin and upped that dose. We usually try to get coverage from several types of narcs. If dilaudid is not working for him...

    Please Help my narcotic situation

Narcan rescue is not without its risk. At my work we give it based on resp status not on LOC. So if RR >8 and o2 sat >88 then no narcan. Just let them sleep it off. I would apply O2, cont pulse ox and monitor frequently.

    Back to the floor!!!

Good Luck! Don't get discouraged during orientation, it may take awhile to adapt to awake Pt's.

    gifts

Wow I guess I am unethical. I have accepted many gifts from patients. They have been homemade such as scarves, hats, artwork, cookies, cake etc. I have never even thought not to accept these heartfelt gifts.
  22. I refrain myself from throwing the computers when they freeze up 3/4s the way into an admission assessment. Over the years that really adds up.

    Staffing Question

    Our policy is two RNs.
  24. I would not be a nurse. Underpaid and under appreciated.
  25. Huh we only chart our start time with the exception of blood products. What type of unit are you in?
