  1. Quick vent. I've been a nurse for a year, and this is my first year as a school nurse at an elementary school. I feel like more often than not, other staff literally come into my office and tell me how to do my job! Teacher: "You need to send this ki...
  2. I am a pushover by nature. I know I could do a better job of standing my ground. I will definitely need to get used to factual answers backing up my stances on things. I'm better at talking to parents than teachers at this point. Thank you for lettin...

    What is your dream unit?

I will definitely be lurking plenty now! I started day one as a school nurse today. The students haven't come back yet, but I'm already enjoying the change to school nursing a lot! (:

    What is your dream unit?

    School nursing!

New Grad...should i stick with nursing?

Try clinics or school nursing. I got into both as a nurse with less than 1 year of experience. I hated the hospital environment (I knew this in school), but I made the mistake of taking a job right out of school in the hospital. Don't apply to hospit...

    School RN pay in Minnesota?

Yes, you get summers off. You can also choose to get paid over the summer, too. Supplementing over the summer is very common. Good luck with your job search! (: Also, try to apply for your public health nurse registration and licensed school nurse ap...

    School RN pay in Minnesota?

Be prepared for a major pay cut. I am starting out after less than 1 year experience. If I had a 1.0 FTE, I'd make $42,000. You'd probably make more with some experience, but it won't be as much as hospital pay. I am in the Minneapolis area.
  8. In response to teaching during the school year and nursing during the summer: it really does sound fun!
  9. Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful advice. I really do appreciate it. I think I'll apply to a graduate initial licensure degree for K-6 within the next 6 months and take a class or two at a time and see how I like it. I enjoy classes and learning...
  10. Hi! I was thinking about doing the same thing. I graduated from nursing school in Nebraska, and wanted to move to Michigan to be with family. I changed my mind and ended up taking boards in Nebraska, then...surprise!...fiance got a job in Minnesota. ...
  11. That sounds like a nightmare. I'm hesitant to leave nursing for the reasons you described with teaching. Thanks for your feedback!
  12. I'm not quite sure what I dislike about nursing. My first job (yes, I've had TWO jobs in under a year!) was in a hospital, and I absolutely dreaded going to work and hated it. I knew I didn't want to work in a hospital during nursing school, but I th...

    Every other weekend & holidays??

I chose to work in a clinic because of the pace....and the better hours with holidays and weekends off. I won't lie. However, I also chose a significant pay cut. If you're willing to have better hours and less pay, that type of nursing is for you. Al...
  14. I sort of don't understand the appeal of hospital nursing. The only reason I can think of is exposure to many different illnesses and manifestations of those illnesses...exposure to a variety of meds...exposure to procedures, etc. Other than that, no...

    Need off the floor

If you're willing to move to Omaha, Nebraska, I know the hospital for you! They'd love to have someone with experience. P.S. the CVICU *really* needs people, and your LVAD and tx experience is awesome. I worked on a stepdown unit that did LVAD and tx...
  17. This is a long shot, but I wanted some advice or help! My fiance got a job in the Eagan area, and I am applying to transfer my RN license to Minnesota so I can start applying for jobs. Then, I can move and be with him. I am currently living in Nebras...
  18. Holy cannoli! I thought I would be okay with starting out as a new grad in an ICU. It's not a level 1 trauma center or anything like that, but still. I wasn't a tech in school, and we have zero techs on our floor. Total cares and everything for our p...

    Guys, this is difficult.

Hey! So I just took the NCLEX this morning. I had 75 questions. 30-something of the questions were Select All That Apply. WHAT AM I GONNA DO. I feel like I bombed it. Many of the questions seemed the same to me, too. Are these bad signs? I guess I'...

    Guys, this is difficult.

That's exactly how I felt! SATAs were my weakness in school, and I felt like I couldn't really "prove" what I knew with it. I tried to critically think my way through it, though! We will see!
