Top 10 Reasons We Get Fired: Sleeping on duty
I worked 12 hour night shifts in an oncology hospital while in my 30's. We only got paid for 12 hours. No overtime! I never ever left on time. Driving home was dangerous and it was only by the grace of God that I wasn't killed behind the wheel. More than once I had to pull over and sleep in the car to even make it home. I was fortunate to have never had an accident but some of my colleagues weren't so lucky. Even if you "make it through" a 12 hour shift you are in danger. To do your best job you need rest. Napping should be allowed on your break. Nurses should not be treated like expendable commodities.

Centimeters Away From Brain Death
I just finished wiping the tears off my face. Isn't it nice to have a victory? So many times it doesn't work out that way. It's such a great feeling!

The Top 10 Things I Loved About Nursing
Viva, I agree with you. I still love my job and I'm grateful that at 64 I am still able to do it. Cherry Ames was my inspiration as a child but in my profession it has been my fellow RNs and patients that keep me motivated. I'm never bored. You have turned the page but every experience you've had up til now has prepared you for your next adventure. Good luck in your new job!

I can't believe the MD did that
I live in fear of a doctor like this. We need nurse advocates but we also need a nursing administration that supports them. Nurses are expected to advocate on the patient's behalf but are often in danger of recriminations. In this economic climate losing your job can be a deterrent to speaking up. This patient was put through a painful, unnecessary procedure without benefit. That is wrong.

How much is too much?
I would never make it through nursing school today! Don't give up! It may be hard but it's worth it.

Is it covered under Obamacare? - Cartoon Contest Winner
I moved south 20 years ago and it still has me shaking my head! People here will vote against their own self interest. Obama care is only the beginning of reform. It will take many years to catch up with Western Europe.

Vent about scrubs
My pet peeve are scrubs that drag on the floor. The patient makes an assessment of you by your appearance. The way you choose to dress can affect your professional career as well. My advice is to chose your uniform wisely.

Retirement in the nursing field.
There are many areas of nursing requiring different skills. I am a Home Infusion nurse. I am sure that I can continue as long as my health and the desire to do the job hold out. I would never even entertain the idea of being a floor nurse in a hospital at the age of 63. In nursing there is a place for all who are able to do the job.

new allnurses logo - feedback wanted
I have to agree with all of the above. Leave well enough alone! Nothing I saw was creative or outstanding. Change for change sake is a waste of time. It only puts people off.

Primary Care vs Specialty
Graduated a Long time ago. I was in my early thirties and didn't want to wait to start in oncology. I accepted a job at a specialty hospital and never looked back. Take the job. I'm betting that you won't regret it. Good luck in your career!
