  1. The happy policy

Ha!! I'll one up that. I was written up a few months ago for "NOT SMILING ENOUGH." Apparently I didn't give the patient that warm, fuzzy feeling after her craniotomy. She was sedated on Morphine all night. What a low blow. I now smile all the t...
  2. Female nurse coworker sexting me from work

Yikes!! I suppose you can, although I'm not sure how much more I can say without going beyond the legal advice terms and conditions of this site. Have you considered asking her not to contact you any more?
  3. Amiodarone

Any patient who requires amiodarone IV needs to be at the very least monitored on a telemetry unit. Where I work, these patients are in the ICU and have VS every hour and on continuous monitoring. The half life is about 45 days and the side effects ...
  4. Abnormal EKG and Elevated Troponin Post CABG

Why wasn't cardiology informed...and his surgeon? This guy was way out of the scope for a hospitalist. If his troponins were increasing, and his chest pain was not subsiding he needed to get a repeat EKG and probably to the cath lab. You did a fant...

  7. What is the most interesting case you've seen in the ER?

Thanks for ruining a really fun topic EDRN10. I once had a 20 something female come in with a GSW to the buttocks. Upon X-ray, learned that she was actually a he because of the penis taped to his inner thigh!!! The patient had female ID and everythin...
  8. Would You Rather....

What would you rather do?Work at the bedside for 20 plus years?ORGo back to school for a doctorate in nursing after only about 10 years of bedside nursing?Who would you say has more respect in the world of nursing? I'm torn.
  9. Don't Know What To Do.. (Prospective Student)

Try CNA first. Less money, then you'll for sure know if nursing is what you want to do. Good luck with your EMT course. As for pre-reqs, A and P, Math, English, and other sciences.
  10. Neck manipulations

They can use an "activator" which is a spring loaded mallot type instrument on your neck instead. If the doc has an issue with not manipulating your neck, then I suggest seeing another one. Hope you feel better!
  11. Thank You for Nothing

"It was the hardest nothing she would ever do." Simply amazing! So profound and touching. A wonderful read. Thanks
  12. International nurses have to apply for a VISA SCREEN via the CGFNS (Commission for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) in order to work in the USA. Their website is extremely helpful. www.cgfns.org. Best of Luck!:)
  13. Varicella titer/TB Skin test?

I lost mine and managed to get a copy of the record from Public Health. Health Canada is usually pretty good at keeping a record of immunizations. Try that first.
  14. Carry Me Across

I'm sure you're a fantastic nurse OP, but you may have missed your calling! Your writing is exceptional. Thank you for sharing. (You should think about submitting it to Chicken Soup for th Nurses' Soul).
  15. Fecal collection systems

Flush with 300-500ml tap water q 12 hours. I like to use those wall air fresheners to help with smell. And changing the bag helps somewhat
  16. Doc have right to get upset with me?

If you lost sleep over every negative comment a doc said to you....you get the idea? Don't sweat the small stuff. Typically, if the patient's temp is > 100.5 at my hospital, we are to report it and/or give Tylenol. Then probably panculture etc, ...
  17. Elevated WBC's after cocaine use

Cocaine use is known to cause the coronary arteries to spasm, and if they spasm for a while, the result is that of an inflammatory response, thus you have your increased WBC. In my experience, Ativan works well for these patients, as it relaxes the a...
  18. Any good rules of thumb r/t IV compatibility? & your preferences?

That's part of the fun and excitement of being an ICU nurse! When you have that crashing patient, and need to reference IV compatability, the pressure is really on! I love that feeling!! I don't think there is an easier or faster way to do it though....
  19. Room 827 - Nursing Ghost Story Article

    Excellent story! Well written!
  20. Stocking up before nursing program starts

A giant corkboard/calendar so you can write what papers are due etc. I also created a filing system for each class, each year so I can go back and find papers, articles, etc in case I wanted to reference anything. And Coke.

  23. Is nursing worth it??

    How about Social Work?
  24. Wow. I can see why you're so upset. I would feel horrible as well. The bottom line is this: You did not follow doctor's orders, and in the end, the patient suffered the most severe consequence. You are lucky that management has not spoken with you...
  25. Patient smokers!!

I fear that patients who leave hospital property with a working IV in place may subject themselves to other means of IV therapy (if you catch my drift). I used to work in an ED where if the patient eloped with an IV in, we would have the police sent...
