Of course, I forgot about dopplers . That would be wayy more accurate!
  3. The role of CNMs in abortion care

I was wondering about this too as I see many job openings for WHNP/CNMs at Planned Parenthood.
  4. Where are the "normal" births?

I think the biggest thing here is there is not ENOUGH research in this area. I'm not an L&D RN, but I 've read EFM has no greater effect on neonatal outcomes or Apgar scores than intermittent monitoring q 15mins (as in a homebirth) does. http://...
  5. CNM Question

Yes, as a CNM delivers babies, who come at ANY time, you are required to be on call. Depending on what type of midwife you want to be your schedule will vary, but most all have "office hours" throughout the day. Prenatal checkups, postpartum checkups...
  6. How to get into L&D??!!

Yes, I know of a girl who was hired in after she graduated because she worked there as a unit clerk. So basically the only way you stand a chance is if they know you personally. Sorry, I am very annoyed today..
  7. Excited!

All I can say is congrats. I will try not to be too pessimistic about all the new grads around here getting into L&D....
  8. potential hire turn offs?

What did they think a midwife does? If your pt's are delivering healthy babies through safe labor, why do you need to intervene? Sorry....whole 'nother thread...
  9. VTACH

I think you did all the right things! you gave the Dr good info. I'm guessing the resp questions was related to her asthma/bronchitis. In my facility we cover k level up to 4.0. Cardiac pts can sometimes be symptomatic with a low normal elyte level. ...
  10. Where are the "normal" births?

Armygirl- You said it all! Maybe an army of aspiring midwives like myself can revolt. I too agree, that women need to develop a voice and make their caregivers aware of their needs/wants, but like you said an 18 year old first time mom ( like me), wh...

  13. How to get into L&D??!!

Where are you located? I have no advice. I have been trying to get into L&D for almost 2 years. I'm working towards a doula certification though. Who knows if that will help!
  14. OB certification recommendations?

From what I've heard, getting NRP really isn't useful because if you don't use it there is no point. I am working towards becoming a doula and certified lactation counselor.
  15. Kissing with contractions

I'm currently reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and notice they recommend kissing through contractions to help progress labor. I'm guessing this helps with the release of oxytocin therefore augmenting labor, like nipple stimulation does? Anyone ...
  16. Kissing with contractions

Yea, I could not imagine wanting to make out with my husband in the middle of labor either. As I'm reading these birth stories I find it hard to believe that these women had went along with the idea! I didn't really think that this was being used in ...
  17. Vanderbilt Bridge Program: Can I take GRE without a BSN?

I believe you can take it. I hope so, as I am planning on taking as well to get in a ADN-MSn bridge. I don't see the point in wasting money to obtain a BSN either. I guess double check the website or call them.
  18. Pvc's/Pacemaker HELP!

quick trick: when looking at a 6 sec strip. Count the number of normal beats, not PVC's. This is then your estimated rate. Example: if there are 5 normal beats and 5 PVC's. The rate is about 50 bpm.
  19. Change jobs to increase my chances?

Just me again, always trying to think of ways to increase my chances of getting into OB. I currently work cardiac stepdown and I am getting a little bored. There are frequently Med/Surg and ER positions in my hospital and I was thinking that these ar...
  20. Does Upper Management Even Have a Clue?

Please, don't stop asking questions! That is how your learn. It's better to ask a question that to do something (or not do something) on your own and have a bad outcome. Maybe there is someone more approachable that you can go to if you need help. You...

  23. Entering A Women's World..........

If its what you want to do, then I say go for it. But beware others (staff, managers) may not like it. A manager can always say "no expereince" as a reason for not hiring you, when they really didnt want a male on their unit. I plan on going straight ...
  24. Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing-FNP Program

I believe it can be taken along with the other classes.
  25. Can CNMs (and other APNs) still work as RNs?

I wonder if this varies by state. I know a few people who were told they "couldn't" work as CNA's any longer once they were licensed RN's. Of course with the job market as it ,they are now umemployed when they would have continued working until they ...
