1. JCAHO Requirement

The Joint Commission is visiting us this week. Seems they are telling us we now have to provide a pill splitter for every patient. I guess I understand the reasoning behind it but this seems a little excessive. Why not put the effort into educatio...
2. Would you be insulted?

Dressed? On your day off? The horrors!
3. Nurses Call the Governor of Tennessee

This right here! Except she slammed 2 mg of vec and walked away. I have been so conflicted about this but keep going back to the basics. Not even the "rights" of medication, but the fact that you should not be giving versed and walking away. I hav...
4. We had a patient recently who stated he wanted no provider of any kind who was not white or did not speak English. I was quite pleased when management told me to ask him what hospital he wanted to be transferred to. I have no tolerance for anyone w...
5. Rolling out bedside report

I think you worked at the same place I work now. And we are now told we will be immediately disciplined, no talk, no write up; just discipline. Bedside report needs to go. away. It is not helpful in any way, shape or form. I can check my own lines. ...
6. And we were having such a nice day, too...

No, no! You have to say it three times in a row...like Beetlejuice!
7. Tips for inserting foleys

Urojet, coude and "high and tight" are the tricks!
8. OCNRN63

Add me to the heartbroken list. I always valued her counsel and wish her peace on her journey. I just caught up on her blog and thought she would come through. Such a loss to our community.
9. Trouble for taking Doctors candy

We replied to a code in the cafeteria once...it was actually a cafeteria worker who was choking. She was mostly upset not because she could have died, but that we would tell her boss she choked on a piece of deli meat she ate from the salad bar and ...
10. Soma or Enclosure Beds... Cruel or not?

I personally think these beds are much kinder than any restraint and allow freedom of movement while reducing falls. I also don't think they should be considered a restraint but I see why they are. Low beds...the patients still get up and out of them...
11. Why I hate Yankauers...

Works great on liquid stool or other puddles on the chux. Makes cleanup (almost) a breeze!
12. Hand off

Please remember that some nurses will ask you ridiculous questions that have no real bearing on patient condition. I personally give an eye roll but that is somehow frowned upon by management. Seriously though, it is perfectly ok to say you don't k...
13. Pressure infuser bag questions?

We don't use pressure bags for blood products either...mainly art lines as others have said. We use the rapid infusers for MTP. Pressure bags are great for dehydration or DKA...I don't pay much attention to the gauge just look to make sure it's runni...
14. ZDoggMD

Proud to be ZPac!
15. Hourly rounding notes

"Pt resting quietly with eyes close, no needs identified" "Pt denies needs; vss at this time" "Medicated for pain per MAR, no additional needs identified" Short, sweet, simple...just a note about what I did or what they need.
16. A Headache is not an emergency

I give up We just had someone bring a baby in by ambulance for diaper rash x 2 hours. This pretty much sums up the reason for this post.
17. Holding benzos

Totally agree with Muno... The MAP is more important than the actual BP numbers for perfusion, if it sustains below 60 pressors can bring it up. Holding benzos in withdrawal is more harmful than a low BP but it can be a dance.
18. Yep. Nurses do "eat their young"

In the wisdom of age, I have learned that there are not as often victims as there are only volunteers. When I became a nurse (later in life I might add), did I lean on and tell everyone about my "months hands on in clinicals and practicum "? No, I...
19. Feeling like you're complicit in the addiction problem...

And I am none of these things...I am a nurse. I can educate but if a med is prescribed, I give it. When I dropped the judgement, I felt better. I cannot change people in an ED visit.
20. A Headache is not an emergency

It's not the coming in with a headache that bothers me, its the "I have a HEADACHE! Why are you making me wait with these other people for so long? I just saw someone come in after me that went straight into a room[picture CPR in progress]!" people...
21. newborn readmits back to NICU

Our NICU policy is that once a baby is discharged, either from newborn nursery or the NICU, readmission is to Peds.
22. Are nurse's all that and a bag of chips?

I hate this meme as well..."what we don't show you" Nope!
23. It's Filipino language
24. Day 3: 2016 Nurses Week Meme Contest

When you find out your ESRD patient with no veins has a portacath!
25. Psych in the ER

The problem in our ER isn't the psych assessment as we have clinicians on site. The problem is that there are often no psych beds available and we have to hold people who have been accepted for admission. Our psych bubble isn't an appropriate place ...
