  1. Night Shift

I worked night shift for a year and a half. Here's what I can think of off the top of my head: 1. Light blocking curtains - these are a must for sleeping during the day. 2. There will be some nights that things are slow. For the most part, however, ...
  2. Hot coffee or tea & MRSA?

So this is how we are exposed to all those nasty bugs and keep from getting sick - we're all too jacked up on coffee! Exciting news, I must say, as now I have an excuse to continue feeding my Starbucks habit
  3. Co-worker passed away. Bad day at work

I'm so sorry for your loss. I will be keeping you, your co-workers, and her family in my prayers.
  4. Bitter dried up nurses that need to RETIRE

AprilFresh, It is not about the actual act itself. I have no problem whatsoever getting a patient a drink, or an extra blanket, or a snack. What I do have a problem with is when said patient is calling me into the room every 5 minutes (even though e...
  5. Would you give Lantus without BG check?

I NEVER give any type of insulin without first checking BG. I had a brittle diabetic once that bottomed out every morning, even after receiving only Lantus (her blood sugar at HS was somewhere around 140).
  6. calling ALL newly licensed NURSES.......[3yrs<]

I graduated in May 2008, licensed in August. I had a job lined up upon graduation at the hospital/unit where I precepted. Worked there for a year and a half, left due to burn out and issues in my home life, and have not been able to find another nurs...
  7. Nurses with PCOS? Or Advice?

ALY529, I am so sorry to hear all this. To be honest, I do not have any experience with this, so I cannot give any advice. I do want to let you know that I will be keeping you in my prayers. I wish you the best.
  8. Support Stickie for New nurses who are not coping

I spent 18 months as a nurse and never found the right way to cope. The hospital I was at was in transition of being taken over by another, we lost our manager 3 months after I started, the director (who happened to have her little brown nose stuck w...
  9. Prayers Needed

    Praying for you both :heartbeat
  10. A Tribute To Those We Care For

    Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
  11. Initial dream: do nursing, then go on to be a doctor (starting to rethink that one...) Dream job: food critic, wine taster, artist, painter, writer, or maybe just an internet job that I could work from home. Acheived dream job: my friend and I are o...
  12. Blaming the nurse

Nuclear Med has gone home for the day and refuses to come in to run a scan - nurses fault
  13. Normal SQBS, critically low venous BS?

Is there any way the finger was still wet from the alcohol wipe? I've seen that make a difference in glucose readings
  14. The veins. I'm always looking at people's veins. I have one friend that gets so weirded out by it. :) I also have a tendency to take note of what prescription medications my friends and family are on and speculate the reason why they are taking it
  15. Are You a Member of the allnurses.com Grammar Police?

I'm not a grammar nazi per se, but I do ask that whatever is written at the very least be legible. I can't tell you how much it irks me to see multiple mispellings, multiple words missing, and so little punctuation that the entire paragraph looks to ...
  16. what I wish I could say to my AAOX3 patients!

Please please PLEASE don't wait until the end of the shift to casually inform your family and the doctor that you've had new onset chest pain all day long, especially when you've been telling me you have no pain/needs! Not only does this make me look...
  17. Nurses-Read this and respond to Dr. Ablow

After reading the article, I find that, surprisingly, I'm not overly angered by it. All it does is show poorly on his character and true intellect. He may have a high IQ, but intellect encompasses not only intelligence, but also understanding and hum...
  18. kaplan vs. Mark Klimek?

I never took Kaplan, but I do have their book, and it is very good. That being said, I have taken Mark Klimek's course and believe me, that course is worth every last cent you will pay! I learned and remembered things from his class that I wasn't abl...

  20. "Taking A Mental Health Day"

sick days? you mean we actually get those?! the hospital i previously worked at didn't give us any. wouldn't even take a doctor's note!
  21. Do whatever you feel is safe.
  22. Are they trying to get rid of me? Will I make it as nurse?

Some encouragement hopefully. I started out as a CNA while waiting to take my NCLEX exam, and I was quite slow at the beginning. It took me forever to take vitals and get things done. After some experience though, I was able to pick things up much qu...
  23. Feedback on the use of lidocaine with IV Potassium

I would not give it simply because it could mask the pain from an infiltrated IV. If I have a pt on K+ complaining of pain at the IV site, the first thing I do is check the patency of the IV. If the IV is good, I will either decrease the rate of the ...
  24. My two cents. The patient was rapidly deteriorating, and as her nurse, I would have wanted to know immediately, though next time, I would suggest hitting the call button and requesting the nurse/help immediately rather than leaving the patient (you n...
  25. Reasons for nursing always epic?

I went into nursing because it was either that or biology, and nursing students got to play with the fun equipment and learn the fun stuff (physiology) much sooner than the biology class. There is my grand reason.
