  1. trachyostomy care in neonates

http://www.thoracic.org/ChildWithTracheostomy11.asp This helped us come up with our new
  2. Breast Milk Policies: MIX UP!

I really have to respectfully disagree there. How would you feel if you gave some kid the wrong boobie juice and later find out that the mom is indeed infected with something? That kid may not die...
  3. ABO Blood Incompatibility

I was thinking the same thing...if the ped is being a butthead now I really don't think I would want this person taking care of my baby in the future. Also, if there was an ABO problem he should have...
  4. "Cookie Cutter" uniforms

I guess I would have to ask myself, self, do I really want this job? If you want it bad enough then you will dress how they tell you, if not, you can always go somewhere where you can wear the closet...
  5. Advice needed about pregnancy/new grad?

The other issue I would think about is....would you be ready to go back to work after only 6 weeks? If you haven't worked at your place of employment long enough, you don't qualify for 12 weeks off....
  6. Having to work Holidays:(

I do know little ones and I personally don't think that it would be too much of you to ask them to wait. But that is your choice. Like I said before, sometimes our families have to give a bit too....
  7. bruising showing up later on newborn?

Ah..if he was acrocyanotic then you can miss them! They sort of blend in :) Don't fret too much about it, we all miss something sometimes and find it later
  8. bruising showing up later on newborn?

Usually bruising happens quickly and doesn't take 11 hours to show up. Did he have petechiae
  9. humidity

Uh, no. Why would someone swaddle an 800 gram one week old 26 weeker in the first place? And leave humidity on? The only time we leave humidity in the bed past one week is...bad skin, extubated...
  10. In-line vs traditional suctionning

I don't like them on the teeny ones with the 2.5 tubes in...it seems the tubes get bend and kinked and they area pretty heavy, esp if we are using the BabyLogs or VIP Bird vents....they have the...
  11. What do you think of throwing away "soiled" items in regular trash?

Many places do this (not redbagging everything) because of cost containment. Hospitals and other institutions are charged by the pound for hazardous
  12. GYN patients in ER (I fought last night with GYN resident!)

I'm with you on the pit...I've had two miscarriages at 8 and 12 weeks and no pit here...they let nature take it's course and if the levels are still up there you get a d/c, at least that is how it is...
  13. Questions about the nicu nurse for school paper?

    1. Have to graduate from a nursing program and pass boards. 2. No, the hospital provides an orientation and we provide many classes for our new employees, such as NALS, STABLE, breastfeeding,...
  14. Better Ratios at the Daycare!!!

That is the norm in most places. At least it isn't like our peds floor where you have 5-6 peds patients. 4 babies is nothing compared to that! At least you have daycare close
  15. face transplants!

The Cleveland Clinic has permission to start already. It is basically a skin and fat transplant from a cadaver...the person that receives the transplant won't take on the look of the donor at all....
  16. In-line vs traditional suctionning

We just went to inline in the past 2 years. All our kids have to have a link on and we have to have a written order to not use inline. All osc/HFV are to be inlined unless have really horrible...
  17. Ouestion about Blood Transfusion

Our hospital policy is....at the start, at 15 minutes then the end. We will do them more often if the patient is

  19. Warning: I need to vent!

Okay, I have to say this...your NM sounds like a horse's behind :angryfire ...an NICU has to follow a standard of care, and this includes having unit specific protocols and procedures. How the heck...
  20. Warning: I need to vent!

Whoa...that is totalllly wrong! We will bring it up in a round a bout way...Oh, have you heard about the HUS yet? I'm willing to bet that these parents don't even know one was done! That is the...
  21. LVN in NICU

We don't have any in our unit either. Most work either peds or
  22. Question ... re: use of hind milk / milk storage

We only have the mom's pump hindmilk if the baby is having a lot of trouble gaining weight despite fortifiers and using 30 cal formula as a fortifier. It is a PITA for the moms. They have to pump...
  23. disciplinary nightmare

Wow...I didn't see this thread way back when! In my state they also do not hire you until you have that handy-dandy license in your paw. Are you still working? I know at our hospital if you are...
  24. Xray tech~ more $$$ than RN???

MRI techs make as much as I do and I have been a nurse for 18 years! Their pay scale is very similar to ours. Reg. techs make lower, but not much. There is a big shortage of techs, so hospitals are...
  25. Headaches w/ facial edema

Yes, there can be a chronic infection without a fever! My DD had something similar last year and it started with her allergies being really bad (on Flonase, Singular and Zyrtec). It is a chronic...
