  1. What does everyone wear?

On days I've got parent meetings (IEP, IHP, IDP) I go for business casual. Days I'm in the trenches and not expecting any such, I have scrubs.
  2. Elementary vs. Middle School Nursing

I've taught at all three levels. I'll stick with high school. The one thing about middle school is that you'll never be around so many people who know everything as when you're there.
  3. Sub Nurse Tips!?

I agree with Nutmegger. The key is preplanning. Hopefully the nurses in the schools you might cover for have their documentation in order for subs. It might behoove you if possible to pay a visit to each office in advance so the nurse can show ...
  4. Leftovers (meds, not food...)

Yep, our police (well Sheriffs Office) has one as well, but our SRO is kind enough to transport the stuff for us to wherever it goes so we don't cram their rather smallish box full with my stuff.
  5. Just applied for a school nurse position at a high school

When we hired for the new position here we had a couple of resumes from male nurses. I wrote each and said as long as they were comfortable with working with female students, we were as well. Turns out that we got a better female candidate, but ...
  6. 2020 small achievements

I'm happy that this is the first "return to school year" that I'm totally liberated from non-student health stuff. It actually was accomplished last year when we hired Trini, but I gave her a hand with her being "new to the position." Now, she's...
  7. Help with inventory

Yep, I get the Ziploc brand bags hat have the white spot to write things on. These can also be used as ice packs. I got the "gallon" size to send home soiled clothing as well (well back in my elementary school days). I also have some plasti...
  8. When is everyone *supposed* to go back?

I'm masked up pretty much all day long. Gloved up any time I'm near a student (sick or otherwise). We run temps on anybody who walks through the clinic door. I'm still a little nervous anytime I see a fever or respiratory symptoms.
  9. If I have to leave?

Not true. You have to qualify. Y ou have to have worked at least both 1250 hours and twelve months. In addition, your district has to be large enough that FMLA applies (50 or more employees within 75 miles). Laflaca said she was in her first...
  10. How do you handle female patients your age or younger?

We had some male applicants for an LPN position at our school where they would have to place foleys (and other procedures) in female students. I first asked if they were comfortable doing that and I talked to the administration about how they want...
  11. It felt wrong...

I'd have sent the kid home even before COVID. I wouldn't feel bad.
  12. Now that we are working from home . . .

Well, today I went through my student meds and listed the kids involved and I'll be sending out emails asking if they want to retrieve the medication or we'll discard them (they just this week canceled the rest of our year). Trini is going over all t...
  13. PPE concerns as we return

Again, it would depend on just who the employer is. It's not very common that the patient contracts directly with the nurse.
  14. Do you think schools will resume this year?

Well, they officially called us out for the rest of the year. Big issue is dealing with the seniors. Trini and I are working on our part of that.
  15. PPE concerns as we return

Her "employer" is required by law to provide it. It would very much depend on what the contractual arrangements are.
  16. PPE concerns as we return

Gloves I have. I didn't have any masks or isolation gowns when we shut down. I'm hoping the supplies won't be as hard to come by when we open back up. They're still saying May 15 but the latest article I read here says that the peak isn't proj...
  17. And just like that.....

I just saw an article that says one of the anti-lice drugs had promise for covid treatment.
  18. Vaccinations are ALREADY a problem with some...

We were finally making inroads on cutting down on the number of exclusions allowed for vaccines. I'm hoping the gravity of the situation is hitting home better than it had for the traditional vaccines.
  19. PPE concerns as we return

I've requested N95/face shields. How this would be administered depends much on whether there ends up being any quick tests for COVID available. Either way, we'd isolate a kid and use full PPE until determining by test (or if not available, simpl...
  20. Policy/protocol for Nasal Versed or stock Epinephrine

I'd be interested in seeing the intranasal versed plan. We were starting to see requests for this if for no other reason that intranasal and buccal versed is a lot cheaper than diastat although they're not direct substitutes.
  21. Do you think schools will resume this year?

They still think we're going to be able to go back in May and get a month and a half in. I don't think that's realistic. I'm preparing for both eventualities. I've compiled a list of a few people like the diabetics that if we DO go back, we're ...
  22. Nursing for Intimate care for men

If that question was aimed at me, I'm not talking about nursing school, but the high school that was hiring.
  23. Nursing for Intimate care for men

Well, there's still a lot of cultural prejudice there (men are doctors, women are nurses). It will take a lot more time and effort to eliminate that. When our school was hiring an LPN for the front office we had a few male applicants. The AP wa...
  24. If your school is closed re COVID19, what is your role

The governor just ordered the schools shut yesterday. We're closing down after today until the end of the month. Since my contract is predicated on the students being in the building, I'll be home as well (because if they don't "forgive" the mi...
  25. Christmas Break

Packing up to go home now. Once the student dismissal bell rings, I'm history. Trini is covering the last few kids who are coming in to her at the end of the day.
