The life cycle of a CNA forum member

This is such a great post. I think I went through at least a few of those phases, although not all on allnurses for the internet world to see and laugh at.

    CNA scope of practice

Why can't you just chart that? Chart, "Pain reported as 7/10 to CNA staff. When patient was assessed by nursing staff/me, patient's pain is now 10/10. _____ Intervention done/med given. Recheck 30 minutes later pain reported as x/10." Pain scores are...

    CNA scope of practice

Exactly the same at my facility. I ask pain level when rounding q2, chart it with my vital signs, and report to the nurse as needed.

Tell me about using your iPad for school

My e-books have a lifetime access. Of course, it will only be for the edition of the book I purchase with my package, so next year when a new edition comes out I DON'T get access to that. (Bummer). But I will be able to go back and reference my text...

Tell me about using your iPad for school

I almost didn't buy the bookstore package because I was sure I could get all the books cheaper from Amazon or Half, but the electronic versions is what sold me. How does a stylus work with your iPad, if you don't mind me asking? Do you have to plug ...

Tell me about using your iPad for school

Haha, now I feel like a hypocrite because I just commented on the "should I get an iphone for nursing school" post and said it was unnecessary - but I admit it I really really want an iPad. My textbook package (all but 6 textbooks for the whole progr...
  7. I was hired before I had even taken my CNA class. My hospital paid for my training and "in exchange" I had to work for them for 1 year. Fine by me, because I needed a job anyway! Good luck, I was also changing careers at the time!
  8. Nursing students got along fine without iphones for clinicals for a looong, long time. I don't think you "need" one. Paper pocket reference books exist. And I wouldn't count on having wireless access available. My (large) hospital only has wifi in...
  9. As a second-degree student (previous BA in history, I get where you're coming from...I knew on some level I wasn't ever going to use it but I just kept going because all my friends were in school, too), finances were also my chief concern. BUT my acc...

FT job but travel nurse in summer?

I have a coworker who is a camp nurse every summer. She works in our ICU in fall, winter, and spring, and then every summer goes off to camp. I don't know how she's worked it out with her manager, but she seems to have a great working relationship wi...
  11. LOVE this! In my dreams I'm a horsewoman. In reality I'm far too poor to take on that kind of financial responsibility. So I get by by living vicariously through internet friends, spending whole days at the fairgrounds during horse shows, and taki...

when do you declare a specialty

I like that scene in one episode of The Office where Michael yells, "I declare bankruptcy!!!" I'm totally going to do that when I find the area I want to work in once I finish nursing school.

    Need help to convince parents!

Accelerated BSNs are programs designed for people with bachelors degrees in non-nursing majors. They probably meant get your ADN and then do an ADN-BSN bridge program. If you can get scholarships (you said you've done well in high school) I would go ...

    Interview attire

Suit, dress shirt, tie, coordinating shoes, belt, socks. No vest. Don't put too much stuff in your hair. Deoderant and a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit of cologne or no cologne. Best of luck to you!!!

physical for entry to nursing school

We didn't have a real physical. We just had to submit our primary care physician's contact info, proof of health insurance, proof of needlestick insurance, shot records for all immunizations and/or titer lab printouts, BLS card, and then we had to g...

Pay for hospital nursing assistants thanks!

In Oklahoma, I started as a CNA in a hospital with no experience at 9.25/hour. I now have 3 years experience and am cross-trained to work any and every department that uses CNAs and I still earn under 10.00/hour.

    cna pay at a hospital

I get time and a half for overtime, plus an extra dollar for every hour I work after 7pm, plus an extra .50 for every hour I work on the weekends. The shift bonuses and overtime add up! :)

Did your nursing program cover 12 lead EKG?

I had been a CNA on the cardiac floor for a little over a year. Then I cross-trained to work as the monitor tech (that's when I took basic dysrhythmia through the hospital education center). I did that for about 9 months until the CVT job openend a...

Did your nursing program cover 12 lead EKG?

LOL Also to the OP, I'm a cardiovasular tech and had all my required training provided by my hospital. I took a short basic dysrhythmia class, a 1-day EKG interp class, and then had on-the-job training for things like learning the equipment and datab...

Clinical Care Technician, am I being taken advantage of?

By "still a student" do you mean you don't have your CNA yet, or do you mean you're a nursing student? If it's the former, did they say if your pay would increase when you're certified? Some places do that. If it's the latter I'm not sure that having...

    Prenursing while a CNA

I worked full-time as a CNA while taking all my pre-reqs. I took a full course load every semester and had no problems earning a 4.0. Definitely consider other aspects in your life, too - it's not just work and school you need to think about. Do you...

what do you say when they are right?

Oh, I'm sure the OP wouldn't seriously counsel the CNA about being in two places at once (obviously, though she may joke with her about it)...but the OP said in the original post that she would say to the family that she would counsel the CNA. Blame ...

what do you say when they are right?

I love how you can't badmouth the facility for crappy staffing but you can blame the CNA for not being able to be two places at once. That's awesome.

ASN or go to accelerated program?

Ah-ha, here you go. These are the 2010 admission stats: http://www.nursing.ouhsc.edu/Prospective_Students/documents/2010stats_000.pdf And if you go here, under "Counselor Links" you can open a Word doc with the 2009 stats: http://www.nursing.ouhsc.ed...

    Is this homeostasis
