The Wait Begins... Any Other NVCC 2012 Hopefuls?

Not that this will happen for u guys, but....last year our transcripts or degree progress reports reflected nursing AAS BEFORE we got our letters. This only applied to those of us already in the VCCS system. It might not be for your class though, since it looks like you will be emailed and not snail mailed like we were. Good luck to you all!

NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

Hi again, Not sure what NVCC will take because I never tried to get in there with something other than 205. They accepted my CHM101 (4 credits) and BIO141-142 (8 credits) and let me right into 205? Maybe ask someone else at NVCC; sometimes all you need to do is contact a professor directly and they will let you into their class...or take it at Germana/Lord Fairfax, and transfer it over. I did my CHM101 at Southside Community College (another VCCS school) online over the summer and transferred it to NVCC no problem. They were the only school offering online and I couldn't take the in class at a local school because it was middle of the day everywhere; work conflict. Remember NVCC is just another VCCS school, so never give up at no :) As for going to another VCCS school for nursing, I recommend you check the NCLEX pass rates...just saying. There's a thread about online microbiology programs, I believe under distance learning. One is at Eastern Oregon, another is at Ocean County Community College, and finally one is Kansas. You could take the course descriptions up to a counselor and see if they would accept one of those? I'd make sure you get it in writing if they will accept one of those. Personally, I'd try to get in at Lord Fairfax or Germanna though, if you really can't convince NVCC to let you in. Microbiology Online at Ocean County College Eastern Oregon University | Eastern Oregon University Edukan Website You can search at vccs.edu for courses offered at all the Virginia Community College System schools. There has to be an option somewhere! Again - Good LUCK!!! :)

NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

NOVA EMT, I can assure you that the NVCC administration does not share any information with us students. We are lucky if they teach us the material :) EVERYTHING that excitedtobehear said is absolutely true. We can only guess from our interactions with other classmates. I took 141, 142, and 205. Most of the people I compare with tell me they did NAS 161 and 162. I really think it has no bearing when it comes to being accepted at the NVCC ADN program. The 161-162 route will be useless in any other realm, with the exception of the NVCC Momentum program. If you plan to go further, through any other plan, which I do, I would recommend to save yourself the headache of repeating A&P and taking micro. I did 141 and 142 entirely online, but had to go to campus for 205. I have heard from others that there are a couple of community colleges (Ocean-something) and 4-year colleges (somewhere in Orgeon) that offer online micro courses. Search this site for online microbiology course and you'll see the info. I'd run it by NVCC before taking from another school and pray they give you acurate information at "student services." I have known some classmates that took 141 and 142 in the same semester, so potentially you could get them all done quickly. It's really up to you, but IMO, it has no impact on selection because the only requirements at this time at NVCC are 161 and 162. I think that NVCC may be one of the remaining VCCS schools that have not moved over to the 141 and 142 205 combo, considering that an ADN won't get you far in this world anymore. So in summary, I believe, take it for what it's worth, that you'd do yourself a favor to get your 141, 142, and 205, unless you want to work in a nursing home or home health setting, then you can get by (for now) with an ADN. Good luck to you! We have all been in your shoes.

How to survive clinical instructor from hell?

you'll be fine....just keep telling yourself that. remember that the first step to improved wellbeing is being able to recognize a problem. those that don't think they have a problem can't/won't change. my friend told me (pre-nursing school) to be prepared. she said "nursing school is full of bitter old women who like to throw their weight around." i remember not fully understanding this comment at the time, but i now get it entirely. this same friend is now a happy and well adjusted nurse that i would (and have) trusted my children's care to. you can get through this one day at a time. the great thing about nursing school is that we have each other. i know that without my classmates (friends now really), i'd be sunk. on a side note, i met with my ci yesterday for 2 hours to "go over my care plan." i have to redo the entire thing, when i'd rather be studying for 4 upcoming exams (or planning thanksgiving, which will probably be delivery pizza at this point). my last ci liked my care plan so much that she asked for a copy to share with future students. try to savor the time away and don't stress over the things you can't do anything about. find something to help you through this. i am swimming (in my spare time ha) more than usual and i talk it out with my friends. just sharing on this site is cathartic, don't you think? i also try to find support in my patients when i am in clinical. your patients need you, but you need them too, or you wouldn't be doing this. they can bolster your confidence. when my ci isn't looking, i try to share caring moments with them and that makes me feel better. keep on hanging in there, you are soooooo close now! :)

How to survive clinical instructor from hell?

I feel your pain and if it was okay with you, I'd give you a big hug. Honestly, what I think is that it's almost over and you should just HANG IN THERE! I only have 2 more weeks now, but it's gotten to the point where I am sick to my stomach 24 hours before clinical. My classmates have been telling me to document everything, which I keep trying to find the time to do (you know how busy we are). I'm no spring chicken and mine has mentioned on several occasions my age, so if it comes down to it, which I hope it won't, I might pull the agism card. I think part of the problem could be that we are not submissive. If we were submissive, perhaps it would roll off our backs easier. So, my nursing plan is to find the time to document and have a few things to pull out of my back pocket if I get an unexpected result.

How to survive clinical instructor from hell?

i can relate as well! trouble is that keeping your eye on the prize is hard when a mentally ill person is holding it. it's frustrating when you know you are a good student and that you understand what you are doing. i think of it like following the directions to make a batch of cookies you've made a million times, then opening the oven to see a pot roast some instructors let personal problems get in the way of teaching, and sadly, some people are just mean. i am going to hang in there and i hope you do too! this is a learning experience we don't deserve, but ultimately we can add it to our bag of tricks that make us better nurses. since you wrote this, you should be rounding the bend. please let us know how you are. you can do this!!! :redpinkhe

NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

Name: Martha Years at NVCC: Been going to NVCC off and on since 1985! Joined the FBook Group: Yes Track: Traditional Career Goal: CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) Planning to Transfer: Yes, eventually I hope (Mason, BSN Program), or VCU (they have an online RN to BSN program I hear) Classes Completed: BIO 141, 142, 205, CHM 101, HLT 141, PSY 201-202, HIS 121, ENG 111, PED 116, PHT 101-102, PED 123, STD 100, ART 101, ART 121, MTH 2-3 (tested out of HLT 141 and IT). Currently enrolled in CST 110 (yuck..IMO). I am 43, have 9-year-old twin daughters, am married, and work full time (currently) for a LARGE local hospital system. I have worked there since 1997, in several departments, but currently in medical records as a transcription manager. I posted this before, but here goes again; I'll try to keep it short. I have wanted to be a nurse since I can remember. I tried in 1985, but dropped out. Tried again in 1994, but quit again. Third times hopefully the charm for me. When I became a transcriptionist, I realized how much I love surgery; it's my favorite report to type. I could probably give a synopsis of many standard procedures from memory (appy, lapcholy, TAHBSO..etc.). When I realized I loved surgery that much, it got me to thinking about nursing again, and then I started thinking that the ultimate for me might be the nurse anesthetist route. Still, I am trying to take this as it comes and frankly I'd be glad to just survive RN. But it's important to have a goal, so CRNA is my goal. I'd like to say that I am so impressed with everyone's posts. I am especially impressed with the young posters with so many college credits and aspirations. I wish I had been so together when I was your age and I hope my daughters will be just like you some day Can't wait to meet you all soon!

Acceptance to NVCC Fall 2011 Program!!!

From looking at the catalog, I think we will all be taking NUR111 and NUR150 the first semester. I suppose that's how we can buy our books before we register for classes. I wish there was some way to have a ballpark idea when these classes are going to be so I can tell my employer. I plan to reduce my hours at work to 20 for the first semester and see how that goes along with school and kids. If that's too hard I will bail on my job and starve! Is anyone else going to try to work that has kids too?

Acceptance to NVCC Fall 2011 Program!!!

@Ashley...you're mail just might take longer. Think happy thoughts and try to remain positive. We're all pulling for you! @SuzyQ, I took my basic chem (CHM101) online through Southside University Community College over the summer. It was entirely online, including the labs!!! They are a VCCS school and it transferred into NVCC without a hitch. It's probably not too late to join the class. I believe it was a 10 weeker. I took BIO 141/142 and micro combo. @Everyone else - YAY!!! Congratulations. I can't wait to meet you all. Didn't it say we would be buying our books at orientation? How can we buy our books if we haven't signed up for our classes yet? Did I read that wrong? I'm just so excited.

Acceptance to NVCC Fall 2011 Program!!!

Yes, I noticed there was nothing about the drug test/background check too. I am thinking of including this in my reply to say I will be at orientation. How about you? I am thinking the more that mention it the better chance we'll have on finding out about it. There is something about a packet being mailed out, but I am thinking that's just for the folks who don't have BlackBoard access. Perhaps it'll be explained when the module is added to our organizations?
