  1. What's in your pockets?

I used to have one of those "tool belts" but our hospital doesn't allow us to pack flushes ahead of time so I just usually have some caps to save IV tubing, claves, alcohol wipes, shears, kelly clamps and a 4 color pen. Used to carry a lot more but d...
  2. Fitness and nursing

I drank the Koolaid and joined an awesome Crossfit box last September. Being a per diem nurse, I like to pick up evening shifts so sometimes I'll get a WOD in before I head into work or take an Olympic lifting class beforehand. Bad thing about evenin...
  3. "A Day In the Life of Nurse Eye Roll'

This is the first blog I've read from this nurse. Thought this could brighten someone's day as I was laughing to myself quite loudly when I was at the vet with my dachshund this afternoon Enjoy! http://nurseeyeroll.wordpress.com/2013/09/16/a-day-in-...
  4. What's the nurse-patient ratio in your unit?

5:1 - Surgical (post-op) floor in Northern California.
  5. First successful IV start

Good job! Keep at it. I did my preceptorship in an ER so I got LOTS of practice and I loved, loved, LOVED the catheters they stocked. Never missed one. Now when I see an old field start or a bothersome AC, I can't wait to restart another one. I have ...
  6. Any CrossFit-ing nursing students out there?

Fellow Crossfitter here! Though I am a newb :) I had been lifting heavy at the gym (back squats, deadlifts, bench presses) for the past four months but just recently signed up at my local box, Rocklin Crossfit. We qualified for the Games this last su...
  7. "A Day In the Life of Nurse Eye Roll'

Yep! hahah that's where I found it. It's so awesome cuz it's how I feel every shift lol Gotta love being a nurse!

  9. A mother's touch: NICU nurse helps dying mom bond with newborn

Daaaa... I tried not to cry but the FEELS were too strong... What a beautiful story... I think the mom knew as well!
  10. Staying in Shape

Whatever you got to do to get that heart rate going, do it! Even if it's just to maintain where you're at during nursing school; 30 minutes of brisk walking, workout DVDs, YouTube videos, etc. I gained about 17 lbs. in nursing school and by the time ...
  11. FY 2014 Air Force Nursing

Thanks for the info! Really helped. I just got hired as an RN so I can't take off the time to get it repaired anytime soon. Maybe in about a year. I am very healthy and the knee doesn't bother me unless I do anything that requires any cutting movemen...
  12. Has the job market gotten better for new grads?

No, they have a very high crime rate due to cutbacks on police force and homicide rate is ridiculous. Probably an interesting place to work at for traumas but I'd rather live/work somewhere a bit safer. Just my opinion.
  13. FY 2014 Air Force Nursing

Hey all, been reading this and other military nursing threads for a while. Regarding the physical, I'm assuming a torn ACL is a DQ? What if I were to get it repaired?
  14. How long did it take you to land your first job?

I worked as a CNA for almost a year a half during nursing school. I graduated in Dec 2012, got my license Jan. this year and was just offered a per diem position at my hospital a couple weeks ago. Went to computer training today! I was very persisten...
  15. Has the job market gotten better for new grads?

It's all bad in California still. I'm in the Sacramento area to be more specific. I graduated in December 2012 and am just now getting offered a position on the surgical floor I work as a float CNA at. Out of our whole class, I think about 6 out of 2...
  16. Any advice on IV insertion skills?

LOVE those Nexiva catheters! I did my preceptorship in an ER and they stocked those. I never missed a vein! Found it very easy to thread using finger flick method. Poke, flash, drop angle, advance slightly, then thread, DON'T move the needle. You hav...
  17. Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

Thank you, someone shares my sentiments! I wish more people could feel my enthusiasm for weight lifting! I used to hate going to the gym, thinking I needed to spend hours on boring cardio equipment to get the body I want. Now, I can't wait to get my ...
  18. Additional certifications

Touching on the flight nurse stuff, I, too, wish to one day become a flight nurse but I know that most companies want about 2-3+ years of experience in ER and ICU setting before being considered. In our ER, they want you to have ACLS, PALS, TNCC and ...
  19. Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

Ladies, don't be afraid of weight lifting! You will not end up looking like a man or too bulky unless you start taking anabolic steroids We just don't produce the amount of testosterone to build up muscles like men do. So put down those 3# dumbbells...
  20. How many of you are in your 20's?

I just turned 29 in March and will start working on our surgical floor within the next month or so after being licensed yet jobless (as an RN) since late January this year. The nervousness is definitely normal, it's a huge decision to become a nurse,...
  21. Anyone trying to get fit before NS?

Great thread! I'm almost 5'8" and started out nursing school already overweight at about 180 lbs (at the most, I should be 145). I gained about 17 lbs in the two years I was in the program. What can I say? This chica likes to eat, haven't met a cuisi...
  22. RN STRONG Sutter

I think they send out a general email saying that the position "has been filled or is no longer available." I have got two of these emails for the CVIU and Tele CVIU limited term positions. I'm waiting on those ER positions! You would think they woul...
  23. Having a nursing student/partner in crime

As others have pointed out, it is inevitable that you will make friends or be close to someone. It wasn't my sole purpose or first thought when I started nursing school but I eventually made really good friends with another girl in my class. She was ...
  24. All CSU will soon require same pre-requisites

This is what I wish they did years ago! It never made sense to me that they all have different pre-reqs for the same licensure in the end. I think the schools that have way more pre-reqs than others were trying to get more tuition $$$ for a highly so...
  25. Im in the cool kids club!!!!

Congratulations! Not gonna lie, I'm super jealous over here! ER is my dream job and need that experience to get into flight nursing. Good luck, I'd be just as psyched!
