  1. We had 3 RN day shifts available recently. All the people who work nights on my unit want to work nights.
  2. I graduated May 09 with my ADN in Texas. I had my job lined up in March 09, not my first choice specialty but I have friends who still have not found jobs! I started in June 09 and passed NCLEX in July 09. I am extremely fortunate since I got day ...
  3. In the state of Texas can a GN work as a CNA?

I think it's more of a liability issue is what my hospital said. As a GN you are performing at a RN level of practice. My hospital (in TX) will not let GNs work anything other than a GN position. Even though my hospital has it's own nursing progra...
  4. RPNs/LPNs vs. RNs

I second that! Maybe the scope of practice is different in Canada for RN and LVN than in the United States but I think you should revisit this once you've had RN experience.
  5. What are the staffing ratios in your state?

I make about $25/hr here in Texas, but usually end up around $30 or more with shift diff. I'm not supposed to have more than 5 patients per shift but have had as many as 7. I work days. 7 patients at night is the norm. The ratios are scary and ou...
  6. RN Voluntary job for getting experience

I don't think many hospitals will let your work as an RN in a volunteer type setting. Maybe they will let you volunteer at a health fair? Or maybe you could volunteer at a low cost or free clinic giving vaccinations?
  7. Dialysis New Grad Pay.....HELP!!!!

Yeah Zimsaint is right, my friend got credit one year for every two years she had as an LVN. She was a new grad RN going through a internship but made more money because of her LVN experience.
  8. Good idea to take micro and anatomy together?

No!!! I would not suggest it! That's two lectures and two labs!
  9. Any nurses with Pacemakers?

My friend had one implanted during nursing school. She was under 30 I think. She didn't seem to think there would be a whole lot she couldn't do.
  10. Ignorance is bliss

I don't know where people are getting that Texas has all these new grad jobs, because we don't. I live in Texas and there are new grad internships every 6 months BUT they only take 2-3 people a specialty with hundreds applying. Most managers I know a...
  11. Terrible visitors - Unsafe situation

You did the right thing! My manager would have had security escort them out if they were behaving that way on my unit. Some people just have no tact nor respect for personal space.
  12. Mandated scrub colors

We have to wear Royal Blue, I actually like that each staff member wears a different color. I think it helps the docs and some of the patients tell us apart. Our badges have big RN badge things that stick out at the bottom so you can tell who we ar...
  13. El Centro/North Lake Fall 2010 Admission

My friend said most people who will get in average 16, the highest is 20.
  14. Anyone going to Haiti?

On the local news here in Dallas TX it said they were looking for 300 nurses/paramedics to volunteer wfaa.com
  15. Forced to Quit My Job To Follow My Dreams

    Two words: STUDENT LOANS
  16. Admission Chances in nursng with a F?

I got into nursing school with a F in aerobics. Never asked about it and it was never used against my nursing pre req GPA. I also taught pre school and was required to take TECA classes totally seperate from nursing courses which weren't counted at...
  17. Excellent pay and sign on bonus, esp for this area. That bonus is basically unheard of around here these days for new grads. Grab it! Cost of living is a lot less than most places here in TX
  18. Do you think this is fair compensation for orientation?

That BS. Through my orientation I wasn't even an RN yet, I was a GN. I got my FULL pay. I was in orientation for 14 weeks, got all my shift difs, and even got overtime. This clinic sounds shady, I don't even know if I would risk my hard earned RN...
  19. 36 hours is only part time??

I work three 12's, 36 hours a week and I'm full time. Make sure it's in writing that your guaranteed 36 hours. Becuase they may give the "full time" the hours first, then you get what's left.
  20. Just took Nclex...again

From several thousand posts on this site, (look up pearson vue trick), the trick has never failed. I suggest Marlene's NCLEX review. I forget her last name, but I listened to her tapes for several hours a day and did several hundred questions a day...
  21. Two Patient Identifiers

We ask the patient their name and also their date of birth. We compare a sticker from their chart to their armband as we ask this.
  22. Did/Does your nursing school operate like this??

I went to a community college with a program that had been around a LONG time. My program was disorganized, the instructors prided themselves as being "weed outs" and schedules were changed at the last minute. Sometimes entire clinical sites where ...
  23. No, your not too old. A lady who graduated with me was 54 or 55. You would first have to start with researching nursing programs in your area. Some may require more pre-req's than others, be cheaper etc. Then go talk to a college counselor. All ...
  24. Penile implaints

My penile implant pt's ALWAYS come back with a foley. They usually are totally bandaged and have an ice pack when they come to me from PACU. I NEVER lift up the dressing unless there is signs of bleeding. Sometimes they have scrotal support too. ...
  25. Good Schools in Dallas for Nursing in Dallas Tx??

I went to school at El Centro in Dallas. It's a community college and offers both RN and LVN. I did the RN route. It's tough to get in to and even tougher to stay in once accepted. Not sure on LVN, I heard funding was low so they might discontinu...
