    Telecommute Nursing

I am wanting to hear from nurses who work/worked as a telecommute nurse. Experiences, great companies to work for, companies to avoid, etc. I am looking to possibly make a change from L&D nursing due to my back injury that occurred at work which resulted in a spinal fusion a few months ago. I appreciate any input and advice my fellow nurses can give me..... :)
  2. I hurt my back at work last fall log rolling a 320 lb labor patient. Workers comp approved my claim. I finally had a spinal fusion surgery 11 weeks ago (my fifth spinous process completely broke off and was just floating). 3 weeks prior to my surgery, my employer let me go due to the fact that my FMLA time had expired and they could not hold my position until I was returned to full duty (which will probably be August or September). I'm curious if anyone has had similar experiences in regards to being rehired by their employer. Am I considered a "liability" now since I filed a WC claim previously? I have not yet made a decision if I will try to go back to my passion of Labor and Delivery or look at other options that don't put so much of a stress on my back......... My only priority right now is to get my back healthy and strong again. :)
  3. LOL - I know. I was curious to the know the name of the HHA you work for to see if you have a website or FB page at all. I am really interested in trying to educate myself on what other agencies offer.... :) Thanks for your input! :)
  4. salvadordolly - I have started to become quite "educated" on the start up costs (LOL). May I ask what HHA is that your boss owns? We don't have any "competition" (yet) at this time..... :)
  5. I am an L&D/well baby RN who is looking at possibly opening up a home health care agency in my area that provides home care visits to pregnant mothers and post partum mothers/newborns. There are no such home services provided in this area of Arizona. I am looking for advice/opinions from people who possibly run an agency similar to this or have some good advice on how to begin. I have received a quote from 21st Home Healthcare Consultants for approx $13,000 to establish a new agency (they do everything - certifications, insurance contracts, etc). Anyone out there have experiences with 21st Home Healthcare Consultants? I would really like to try and find a home healthcare consultant in AZ to do this set up process for me, but I have I am having difficulty locating one......
  6. Any suggestions for a person who is just at the beginning of possibly establishing a home health care agency (I am looking into opening an agency that serves pregnant patients and does initial post partum/newborn visits)? Any opinions on hiring a home healthcare consultant (such as 21st Century Health Care Consultants) and what the estimated price would be to hire such a consultant? I just want to be able to establish the true "reality" that my agency idea would be successful (I live in a rural are in Arizona where no such services are available). I also need to find out if our state funded insurance would cover home visits, that I wouldn't run into "compete" problems with out local hospital facility (who also happens to be my employer), and how do I approach the local physician's to see what their interest level/support would be with these services???......HELP! :)

L&D nurse doing home visits as a second job.....

jkat276 - I have been informed that many insurance companies (even state funded insurance companies) do indeed cover antepartum and post partum home visits as they feel it assists in good teaching and preventative care. I have no interest in being a doula as I have my own family to take care of at home. I am more interested in planned home care/education visits.
  8. I was just curious if anyone had had any experiences with L&D nurses doing home visits (pre-delivery or post partum)? I absolutely LOVE my job as an L&D nurse but not getting my hours due to low patient census. I would love to be able to do open up a service for "home visit care and/or education". Maybe work under an OBGYN or a service that our hospital could start offering, but I would like to try and run it as my own "business" rather than "work under" a doctor or facility. I don't want to work my "booty" off so "others pockets" can get even fuller (as I do in my primary job). It would be nice to be able to keep that money in our own pockets - may be even hire other L&D nurses to work for me. Would health insurance companies cover it as a "home health care well visit" maybe? I am unsure of even the legalities of it all. Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.....

    Opinions on furthering my education......

I have been and L&D nurse for 2 years now with my Associates Degree. I absolutely LOVE my job and I am very content but I am also trying to "look ahead" and slowly prepare myself for advancement. I am interested in possibly pursuing a Nurse Practioner's license, specializing in Obstetrics. I want to do a program that is completely online. Need some input - RN to MSN degree (pros, cons), get BSN then pursue MSN, opinion on programs phasing out MSN for NP to Doctorate programs, suggestions on accredited and affordable online schools?? :)

New grad needing advice on transitioning to working nights.....

Thanks everyone for your great advice! :0)
  12. I am a new grad that will be starting a fulltime L&D position next weekend - working nights. I worked nights for a very short time at a nursing home years ago. I hated the lack of sleep and the "zombie" feeling I had every day. Can I please get some advice from you experienced night nurses out there on the best way for me to transition and survive working nights? I do have a family here at home as well, so that is part of the equation for me - balancing it all...... :0)

    Hurst Live Review preparation.....

Sunrise TX - for myself, I didn't have the discipline to sit and watch the all the videos and complete the fill in's in the Hurst book - especially with 2 kids home on on summer vacation. I totally recommend the 4 day Live review. You are also given access to many online Hurst tools to help you once you complete the LIVE review - including 6 online practice tests (750 questions) with rationales. Let me know if you have any other questions.... :0)

    Hurst Live Review preparation.....

gcat626 - I felt Hurst fully prepared me for the NCLEX. I took the NCLEX 1 week after I did the Hurst live review. I reviewed my Hurst book a few times and did the 750 practice questions - that was all I did to prepare for NCLEX. The majority of my class has already taken the test and everyone has passed - and they all took the Hurst review as well! Good luck!! :0)

    Hurst Live Review preparation.....

Thanks to all of you for the great information!! :0) It really helps (and sets my mind at ease a bit that I am on the "right path" of studying)..... I have been doing the Hurst online review the last couple of days and will start my LIVE review on Tuesday for 4 days. I will take all your suggestions and "run with it".......... :0) Many, many thanks!!
