Too cheap of a steth (ie: drug store brands) can cause difficulty in hearing sounds. So just be careful and dont buy it "too" cheap. :)

Yes, I am a new nursing student too and noticed the.. see-through.. like effect too. Try going to walmart, or practically anywhere, and just get some cami shirts and it should help you feel a little more comfortable.. haha :)
