Hello, I just wanted to ask a question of you. I see that you gave good advice to a member, and I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction too. I too was recently terminated via mail. But was planning on leaving after getting 1yr acute experience. This was a Medsurg position, and it truly wasn't a good fit for me. My question to you (or anyone), is how do I respond to that if the topic comes up? FYI. this happened 2 days ago, after which I received an invite to interview for a position that is occurring 5 days from now.
Please help!
Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you were let go from your previous position, although it sounds like it will work out well. Since you will probably not be using the previous employer as a reference, I would say the best way to address it during the interview is to tell them that you decided that it wasn't a good fit (which is true), so you left to pursue other opportunities. This way you could be immediately available for other positions. If they press you on what made it not a good fit, make sure you have some responses ready- like maybe the support they have for newer graduates was not what you had been promised, or you just came to find that the workload of the med surge floor was not what you were looking for. As long as you don't come across as bitter about your old employer, or presenting it as they were "mean", you're likely to be fine. It's a good time to be looking for new employment. They may be so happy to have you interviewing that it doesn't come up at all. But if it does just be prepared to give them a professional sounding response. Good luck!
