  1. help, new grad with first NARCOTIC med error :(

This was a team mistake, the narcs should have been removed from the cart and destroyed long before two weeks. Not saying that a mistake is okay, I have made a few myself, but as a learning tool, all actions need to be looked at not just yours.
  2. help, new grad with first NARCOTIC med error :(

Administration could learn a valuable lesson from this mistake also. They should be asking themselves "What allowed this mistake to be made?, and how can we learn from it?" Do NOT throw in the towel, you caused no harm to the pt. You owned up to the...
  3. Do you find this article insulting?

What I find insulting is the broadness of the comments regarding SNF's. I happen to work in a combination facility, one hall is "skilled" the other two are long term care residents. Our skilled hall has wounds that need tending daily or Q shift, ALL ...
  4. Scored a job interview, but may be in over my head

Take that time to prepare yourself well for the interview. To many time I have gone in ill prepared only to kick myself later. Again, good luck.
  5. Scored a job interview, but may be in over my head

Define "steep" to you it may be a small incline. You will never know unless you try. Good luck in your interview, I hope you get it. The best person for the job is the one who has the most passion for it. I curious and motivated person is better tha...
  6. Is a double major, BSN/BSW worth it?

One more semester for another degree? Absolutely!! You may regret it down the road, get it done and if you never use it, better to have it than need it and not have it.
  7. I am an RN who is working on BSN, I will be done in May of 2012. I am working in LTC full time, two days a week as charge nurse, three days a week as bridge nurse ( helping out the charge from 11-2 and doing a med pass from 2-7). I am really startin...
  8. Thanks! I know how good I will feel when I graduate with my BSN, but I don't want to regret it each time I pay the massive student loan bill each month. LOL
  9. and everyone's... OK with this?

Wow. guess I will count myself lucky to make 24.00 hr as a new nurse working in LTC/skilled nursing. I live in Oregon where the cost of living is very high so maybe it levels out, maybe not but the RN start at 30$ hr at the local hospital here, that ...
  10. Starting with a new group at work need advice...

I just typed a huge post and lost it when I tried to add a smiley. Here is the abridged version: Do you have what you deem " abuse" outlined so you know what to look for? Things to consider are, age, gender, culture, social status and economic stat...
  11. new nurse refuse drug test

You should not worry about the results, it is not an illegal drug and you had a current rx. What you should be worried about is your first reaction was to LIE. Not a good quality in an RN.
  12. Not in my state. Not sure if that is the same every where, but here in Oregon you have to have your CNA for 6 months and have logged x amount of hours worked before moving on to CMA. Check the requirements first, plus you may have to cross over as a ...
  13. New grad, working 3 mo, maybe fired!!

No, you should not be blamed for that. You can't be blamed for that. You documented the attempt to apply the Bi pap machine twice, you can't force a pt to wear it. besides sats of 89-90% for a person on acute RF is pretty darn good. The Bi-pap should...
  14. OMG will I get sued if I continue to work here?

WOW. All I can say is CYA. Document every move you make, don't give a med unless it is totally matched with the original MD orders, not the MAR, those can be messed up by someone in between. If you really feel that strongly don't ever accept a shift ...
  15. What procedures/cares can a RN do while a LPN cannot?

I am having the same questions. I am an RN and work with several LPN's and need to know thier scope of practice. I know the OSBN has a pdf file with the LPN and RN scopes on it but it is a hard read. I wish there was a side by side list of do's and d...
  16. This can't be right...

Leave and don't look back. The DON will hang herself sooner or later, just don't be around to catch any spatter when she goes down for writing RX without a license. It seems like the DON has a complex about doing things her way and not the right way,...
  17. Giving tylenol to a family member.

I understood your post by reading only ONE time. Seems some of us ( and you know who you are) can't admit when they are wrong. No advice about giving a tylenol but your post was fine for being off a 12 hour shift and being 0200!! No need to apologi...
  18. What's eating me-theories and professionalism

Seems that regardless of the theory used by an RN if they would do a full assessment and find out what happended, all outcomes should have been the same. When you rely on a " theory" rather than your brain and assessments, that's what make you look ...
  19. I have been reading the " stats for dummies" book and it seems like I may do fine. But.....
  20. I have no idea what to do

Have you tryed SNF's or nurisng homes. It is a job and you will get some great orginizational skills, prioritizing skills and how do deal with chronic illnesses and death. Not every new RN needs to work in a hospital.
  21. No responses to applications.

I in the same boat! Sent out many resumes, watching all my classmates get hired with only one application in, no call backs or foot work on their part, so I am wondering what I am doing wrong. Finally took a job I really did not want but it's a pay c...
  22. So why do I feel sub-standard?

In my county the unemployment rate has just hit 12.9%!! I am a new grad who did not apply for the internship at the local hospital but have put in a regular application with the hospital as well as application with other outlying hospitals. I put in ...
  23. 2010 jobless grad needs advice!

I am also a new graduate working towards a BSN. There is a 12.9% unemployment rate in my area so I took a job in a SNF, great hours, very comparable pay for new RN's, a good foot in the door and a great opportunity for time managment and learning to ...
  24. Should I walk away from this job?

Maybe you were put there to make changes in the care? With all the new staff you have the opportunity to change the level of care if at least it is just with you. If you leave because you don't like the level of care, will you not be leaving an oppor...
  25. any passers out there????

I passed the first time. 78 questions. As far as I know the pass rate, according to the Oregon NCLEX stats are 85% pass rate for the first time. You will do fine if you tell yourself YOU WILL pass the first time. Like you said at 200$ per try, passi...
