Why are FNP paid less than Psychiatric NP?
I do think it is supply and demand at this time, HOWEVER, we are seeing a shift in this in my region. I go to a local brick and mortar, and my program alone has over 100 students enrolled in the PMHNP track--whether it be for a new MSN degree or a post-masters cert. I work for one of the largest healthcare systems in my state in an outpatient behavioral health clinic. I am graduating in 7 months and was just told by my employer that they presently have NO PMHNP positions open, so there may be a possibility that I will have to look elsewhere :(

Bedadine for vaginal birth
Just warm water and soap

Transition from med-surg to labor and delivery
I stumbled upon mine pretty quickly. I will say our manager prefers hiring nurses with no L&D experience only if they have ER experience.
-
who hard is L&D
Exactly what she said! I see a chiropractor regular because I would like to continue doing this for 20 more years. After the last two days with an average pt weight of 300 pounds, I feel like I have been hit by a truck! Best wishes!

Hospital OB/GYN Clinic Orientation HELP
When I went to the office I felt like GYN was my biggest learning curve so I focused a lot there.

Mother-Baby to L&D
Awesome! They are giving you a month in the classroom? That, too, is awesome. Welcome to the jungle. You will now have the honor and privledge of being there for your patients during some amazingly happy moments as well as the most profoundly sad moments. Take it all in and enjoy the ride.

I am a real nurse
Are you hearing that you are not a real nurse from other nurses?? This baffles me. In 20 years as a LPN and RN I have worked psych, ICU, L&D, and as a Office nurse. And in every roll I was a "real nurse". I thought that is was RN stood for? LOL!

Do RNs get extra pay for working with students?
I would like to preface this by saying I am the first nurse to volunteer to take students. I enjoy teaching HOWEVER, what you are naively failing to understand is that while your clinical group prances out the door at 1415....I will have to bust my a$$ to get caught up on charting and all the little minute tasks placed on me so that I can be out the door by 1930 and not get in trouble for overtime. It does take effort to explain things as we are generally doing several tasks at once. I guess I am not as efficient as you.
-
How did you know?
I had no desire to go to L&D...went to ICU as a new grad. One year later ended up on L&D!

Boise state online RN-BSN
I just finished my first 3 classes. Yes, out of state pays in state tuition... $330 per credit. I love it. Definitely challenging but doable. Papers, exams, group projects and power point presentations so far. Feeling like I made an excellent choice in programs!

Boise State RN to BSN
I am currently in Boise State RN to BSN program. I have seen this caveat on almost every online program I have researched. It has to do with those states education approvals. I am in wisconsin and there are a very popular online programs that I couldn't do. I would contact Maura Rasmussen at Boise and ask. I love the program.

Com'on, you got one...What is your heart wrenching moment?
Working in the OR and was on call. Answered the phone at 2am to here the nursing supervisor say "hurry. He is bleeding out". Rush in. 17 yr old GSW to the chest. I will never forget his mom...draped over his body as I was pulling the cart out of the room to take him to the OR. We were working feverishly and I lost track of how many units we were giving. I all the suddenly looked up at the monitor. Pulse 0...with a rhythm...PEA. I still know the exact time he passed. I cleaned up his body...even under his fingernails. ..and I wrapped him in warm blankets. For some reason I was fixated on not having his mom remember him with blood under his fingernails and cold.

Nursing student with questions about ob/gyn clinic?
I guess it depends on what your role would be in the clinic. Phone triage definitely requires a good skill set.

Pay grade: experienced nurse vs new grad
I once had a nurse tell me that it doesn't "pay" to stay at a facility for more than 5 to 8 years. That seems to make sense now...
-
Floating Policy
I work L&D and can only float to postpartum. No one floats to us.
-
Urgent Csection
You did the right thing by calling for an xray. That is the policy in every OR I have ever worked in. Don't beat yourself up. You are still new at this and things will come with time. My heart still races when we go back for an emergent section...and I have been doing this long enough!

Neonatal assessment team
One of my fellow L&D nurses tend to the baby after delivery. NICU team comes for high risk deliveries or if heart tones are crappy. When NICU comes...they just make sure baby is stable and then they go....leaving me to do the full baby assessment in addition to eyes and thighs etc. On super bad days it has just been the doctor and I in the room!
