  1. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Hi, I am a new grad looking for some advice or opinions on this issue I am having. I have been working for 6 months at a hospital and have been having some problems there. At my interview, my NM for some reason told me that it annoys her when people ...
  2. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Thanks for the replies. With the exception of the hostile one, of course. I didn't post this blog to be insulted and I don't feel a need to waste time defending myself. That said, I have left the position several months ago and am currently looking f...
  3. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Looking back, I feel like I never had a chance once the fact that I was expecting was revealed. I did go to my union right away, but my union wasn't very strong and I actually think that made things worse for me. My NM really had it out for the union...
  4. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Also, the NM had a lot of friends that she made throughout the hospital before her daughter had died and they could not believe that she had become a tyrant. The NM was not just harassing me. She also harassed older employees, some nursing assistants...
  5. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Thank you for your book recommendations! I plan to check them out. You are right that my NM had emotional issues. The hostility vibe that she gave off was almost unbearable at times. I discovered through the course of my employment that her daughter ...
  6. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Supplyguy- very inspirational post! I agree that the experience was very traumatizing and I have acknowledged that. In fact, I have filed a discrimination complaint with the EEO regarding the treatment I was subjected to in the workplace and I had a...
  7. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

I can't believe it's been 7 months since this all happened! I have not returned to the workplace yet. I decided to take a longer maternity leave of one year. I have continued to take continuing education modules online to stay on top of and hopefully...
  8. bad reference cost me a job

I know that this is a later post, but you can always have a professional service check your references for a fee. These companies copy verbatim what was said as well as provide an analysis of the way things were said, such as a former manager's tone ...
  9. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Thanks for the continuing support. I have still not heard from the BON and my time with my new baby has been great. Believe it or not, I was never oriented on the fact the you need a second nurse to verify insulin dose. Since then, I've been told th...
  10. New Grad wants to be school nurse

Hi, I am wondering what school nursing would be like for someone who is basically a new grad? I have worked in rehab nursing for 7 months and am currently on maternity leave, but would like to pursue a career as a school nurse. Any tips/suggestions o...
  11. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Well, it's too late to ask for a transfer. I did attempt to get a job in another unit towards the beginning of my time there, but my manager gave me a negative reference (after only a few weeks!). I should have tried harder to get into another unit b...
  12. New Grad wants to be school nurse

Well, I am hoping that I would have resources as a school nurse. For example, I could look things up in textbooks when I need to. Hopefully, the school provides those resources, otherwise I would seek them out independently. I wasn't a big fan of the...
  13. New Grad wants to be school nurse

Thanks for the replies. I have been trying to read up on nursing in general as well as pediatric nursing issues. I did check out the website and think I will shoot for a part time or substitute position when I do apply. I already have my school nurse...
  14. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Thank you for the support. I have been taking continuing education courses on medication safety, as well as nursing in general. I plan to go into my next job much more prepared. I now realize that it is in my power to try to prevent these situations ...
  15. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Not to continue to be "difficult", but what about the fact that my NM DID create a hostile environment for me from day one (as she knew of my pregnancy)? Further, why was I trained differently than other newly hired staff? True, I made errors and was...
  16. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

My attorney also advised that I seek continuing education in order to show that I am learning from my mistakes. So I have been doing courses online about medication safety. I do believe that I was poorly trained in addition to a knowledge deficit. I ...
  17. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Well, I just got a letter from my former employer summarizing their reasons for reporting me to the BON. They say that I can respond to the accusations within 14 days or they will decide independently whether or not to report me. I am afraid to make ...
  18. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

I did resign, effective tomorrow, actually. I do have preceptors that would be references for me. During my orientation, I was actually shuffled around quite a bit, so I can count pretty much every nurse on my floor as a preceptor (including the LPNs...
  19. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Yes, I realize malpractice insurance would have been very helpful in this situation by making available legal advice. At this time, I decided going to a peer review board hearing and potentially being terminated was a bigger risk than I was willing t...
  20. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

This forum has been very helpful for my to muddle through what has happened and to learn from my errors, both in terms of nursing and in terms of the politics of nursing and starting your first job. I suppose I drift back to the original question tha...
  21. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

The only reason I brought up the weight lifting restriction was to illustrate the entire picture. Jolie, I guess I don't know what you mean about putting responsibility for the 25 lb weight lifting restriction on my NM. I believe that she felt like h...
  22. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Yeah, I don't really expect to be keeping this job, and what IS important to me is learning from this experience and taking that with me in the future. Hopefull2009, you are absolutely right that my union involvement may have been excessive and setti...
  23. Freaked Out New Grad!

Start confident is my advice. Jump right in and try everything you can. Be really friendly, but don't trust anyone. Always take the time to look up a procedure, rather than simply asking. You'll do fine. It's natural to be nervous.
  24. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful responses. I know it is a convoluted situation that has many layers and is not black and white. I appreciate all the responses I've gotten and it has been really helpful to me to hash it out with other nurses who k...
  25. Threatened to be Fired for "patient safety" issues.

Well, as I said, my only documented limitation while I was there was during that 2 weeks. I DO understand why she would have it out for me since I started pregnant and then got into that MVA. It was a bad situation being my first nursing job and my f...
