  1. Title of "BSN" on badge?

There is nothing to stop you from ordered embroidered scrubs with your name and credentials on it. I am a clinical educator and I wear a lab coat with my name, credentials and title on it. My badge is just like everyone elses....it has my first name ...
  2. Why a C-Section?

what that day a-comes dayray i will be out of ob forever. i will try to at least help preserve breastfeeding in my role as a lactation consultant but the joy will have gone out of l&d for me. i didn't have time to read all the posts in this threa...
  3. male L&D nurses and vag exams

If the male MDs are required to have a female staffer in the room when they are doing exams then I guess you could require the same of a male nurse. If not then why would the nurse need one if the doc didn't? Doesn't make much sense to me.
  4. Would YOU ever have a homebirth?

BTW - the reason I said 'Physician' is because many hospitals suggest instead of asking a patient if they have a "doctor" some may answer no, because they have a nurse practitioner. They now suggest the term Physician because it is broader and encomp...
  5. Should BSNs be paid more?

An old and tired debate but one that still lives because of all of the inequities that we see every day. All I can say is that every time I get frustrated that the LPN who works on the Mother/Baby Unit exclusively gets paid more than I do with my MSN...
  6. It's a Hospital, Not a Hotel (Gripe)

Hmmm, this has been an interesting thread but, for me, a very disturbing one. I realize that people are venting, and many of the posters complaints have been valid. However, the amount of venom being directed against the idea of providing basic custo...
  7. man holding wife still during epidural dies!

The fact that this could be such a hot topic among OB nurses is one of the reasons I am getting discouraged with OB nursing. It DOES seem to me that in many ways we are returning to the dark ages and so much of that is related to the threat of litiga...
  8. More Strange Baby Names

as a labor and delivery nurse i have seen the name heaven quite a bit lately. i have known of two little girls named heaven nevaeh (pronounced neh vay uh) and a set of twins named heaven and neveah. neveah is heaven spelled backwards!
  9. Injections- still pull back?

I aspirate. Once I received an injection of lidocaine into a vein during a dental procedure......NOT FUN. I would never want to cause such trauma to a patient of mine.
  10. 1950s nursing

There is a funny joke about that: Retrieved from http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~abhu000/diabetes/tidbits.html Tidbits A joke from the late 1940's It is recounted that at King's College in the Strand around the time of the war, the Chief of Services ...
  11. Well the good thing about this is that the patient finds out right away that this is not the doctor for her!
  12. You learn something new every day!!! :rotfl:
  13. Thank you Kevin. I value your opinion. I agree this is dangerous and I am the person who wrote the curriculum for our Prepared Childbirth classes (and I currently teach them all myself although I am looking for help!). I am very careful to teach th...
  14. Florida Roll Call ......

My prior message was posted a while back. I know more now than I did then. Actually, although the building is old I am not finding that the practices here are any more "antiquated" than the other hospitals around us. And since I arrived we have a new...
  15. How many went from new grad to L&D?

That is true but they usually will allow you to spend a decent amounot of time (like a year or more) just getting comfortable on Mother/Baby and you can pick up a lot about L&D and the nursery while you are doing so.
  16. Not cheap but very comprehensive two video set that I think is invaluable. http://www.injoyvideos.com/IJOneVolOneVer.cfm?id=200 If your organization can afford two sets it is available in Spanish and English and it contains information about pain med...
  17. Extraction of a retained placenta

Only slightly Allison?! LOL Patience is something a lot of docs don't have. Tugging excessively on the cord CAN cause manual extraction to become necessary. It is important to note that shortly after delivering a 7 lb baby (for example) it isn't con...
  18. Years ago I knew a psychotherapist who was also a musician. She advertised something similar as part of her practice. She would help expectant parents plan the music that would coordinate with the different stages of labor. As a childbirth educator ...
  19. :rotfl: Not only did you words make me smile but your avatar did too! Thanks for the giggle!
  20. How many went from new grad to L&D?

I agree with this. I had even been a childbirth educator for over 10 years before I became an RN so it seemed more than natural for me to become an L&D nurse. However, the hospital I taught at, and wanted to work at after graduation, was in a hi...
  21. holding a baby in after being fully dilated??

I love your avatar image! :redpinkhe
  22. holding a baby in after being fully dilated??

Any L&D nurse worth her salt can deliver a baby that is determined to come regardless of who is in the room! That is part of the orientation process because we know that these things happen all the time. We try NOT to allow them to happen but, yo...
  23. Problems with Rn's in clinicals

I LOVE having nursing students. I don't consider them a hindrance but an opportunity to share some of what I know with eager individuals. It can be lots of fun to work with students and I try to make it fun. I want to be sure that they get the most o...

  25. How do You deal with Man-Hating Female Nurses?

You have gotten many wonderful replies which I hope you have found helpful. I skimmed through them all and didn't see one that occurred to me. Do you have any friends who are male nurses who are looking for a job in an ER? Maybe if you could recruit ...
