  2. Religion Needed to be a Good Nurse?

Our job as nurses is to support the patient in their beliefs. Their belief system comforts them. It's not about you, it's about the patient. For me this is very clear - part of my role is to try and facilitate the patients physical and emotional comf...
  3. Anyone seen "Oz"?

I've gotta say, I just watched season 1 of "Oz" on DVD and I'm hooked! Looking all over for season 2! I think they do take some creative license with the show -but the type of things you mention probably wouldn't be picked up on by the general public...
  4. Scary story!

I carry OC (pepper spray) on the outside and I wouldn't hesitate to use it. I have run into former inmates on the outside, but fortunately it has never been a problem. I am certainly more aware of my surroundings and who is around me than before goin...
  5. Typical night shift duties

I work night shift in a 200 bed male prison and we are staffed with 1 nurse (RN or LPN) on this shift. It is one of the busier night shift jobs that I've had. Duties include: Paper work - what night shift would be complete without it! Taking off orde...
  6. wearing perfume to work

I do wear a little perfume to work, but I work in a prison. On more than one occasion when I've gone down to Booking the Officers have asked if I would stand in front of the fan for a moment (to blow the smell at them) - I guess it beats that unique ...
  7. Your employer's policy re: *snow and ice*?

Harleygirl, you nailed it on the head - it's been my experience that the people with poor attendance are always the first to call out when there is bad weather (any excuse will do), and those with good attendance make it in as always. We had a snow s...
  8. Your employer's policy re: *snow and ice*?

I live in Vermont and expect snow and ice - I can honestly say I've never called in due to weather. For me that would not be a good enough excuse to not show up when I'm scheduled. Plan ahead, leave earlier and use additional caution.
  9. working on Christmas?

At the risk of offending someone, I'd like to vent on this subject. The reason someone has to work christmas at a business that operates 24/7 is self evident. By and large xmas is most people's first choice to have off, so if everyone is willing to w...
  10. Religion Needed to be a Good Nurse?

In 15 years of nursing in a variety of settings I've seen a lot of diversity in people. Different things comfort different people. I'm an atheist myself, but I haven't ever found this to conflict with nursing. For me, my role is clear - I try to fac...
  11. CPR after rigor mortis

You know, I'm really liking the t-shirt idea. Imagine the looks as people try to figure out what that means!!
  12. How did you come to work in corrections?

I had been working in psychiatry for 5 yrs and applied for a correctional job just for per-diem. I was pretty sure I wasn't interested in this type of nursing, but the pay was good. The first week I oriented I knew I loved it. I went to corrections f...
  13. CPR after rigor mortis

A couple weeks ago at my job at the prison an inmate was found dead while breakfast trays were being passed. A medical emergency call came over the radio and I responded to that unit. The inmate was a 44 yr old morbidly obese male who had stated he h...
  14. Suicide in Psych Ward

In my state, (Vermont), cavity searches are not allowed - even for people entering prison. You would be suprised what people manage to smuggle in. So even though the patient who suicided passed through police custody, that doesn't mean they were able...
  15. What field of nursing would you NEVER consider working?

Hi Grouchy, Corrections is interesting - it is a part of society that not everyone gets to see. It's sort of a subculture that is amazingly alike in facilities all over the country. Unlike medical facilities security is primary and medical is seconda...
