  1. Ethics, or Ethics for Nurses?

I took bioethics. It was awesome!! It dealt with today's controversial issues such as PAS, the right to die, the right to receive healthcare, genetics testing, etc... It was the best course I have ever had to take to get my BSN. I wish there were mor...
  2. dumb questions

    LOL!!!! That is so true!!!!
  3. dumb questions

#1. There are NEVER dumb questions!! The questions are how you learn. #2. No, no need to call the doctor at that hour, unless you have a deathwish!! Already on ATB's... can wait until the doc does rounds later.
  4. Is it 5 or 7?

just new in the past 3 years, #6 is the right to know (effects, etc...) and #7 is the right to refuse.
  5. Puuuuuuulese!!

"I left my Oxycontin on the table at the restaurant and the manager flushed them down the toilet." This was 1/2 hour after getting the script filled, and the manager said the lady came through the drive through, but did not enter the restaurant!
  6. You might be a nurse if.......

You have your nurses cap from graduation on your car's dashboard---2 years later!! You have your stethescope hanging over your rearview mirror. You look at strangers veins in the checkout lane thinking "Wow, that would be an easy stick!!"
  7. I do not mean to sound harsh, but as charge nurse, you also have the obligation to oversee that patient's care. There is truley no excuse for the blood not to have been started within 20 minutes of the lab calling the first time. The patient also sho...
  8. taking students, precepting

I believe it is stressful and at times hard to deal with students. However, what we nurses have to consider is that we were students once.
  9. Is a community college education a bad one?

Community colleges generally offer a 2 year degree... which I have found to have more clinical time but less theory time than a 4 year program. Many, many nurses are from a community college, and many of our hospitals would have an even higher shorta...
  10. what shoes do you wear...

I wear Sketchers. My podiatrist and my ortho doc both recommend them for nurses. They are the most comfortable shoes and since I started wearing them, my feet and legs do not hurt after an 8 hour shift anymore.
  11. Is there a good method to decide who works what holiday?

We work every other holiday, with the rotation changing at labor day. That way it is fair. If someone is scheduled to work a holiday, if they call off, then they lose their right to holiday pay. If a person is scheduled to work a holiday and they wan...
  12. Controversial HealthcareTopics...

Eugenics is a hot topic. PSA and euthanasia are always a good topic. Informed consent is a good topic. It is not suppose to be controversial, but often is due to the fine line between consent versus coerced consent. Justice in access to healthcare.A...
  13. Advice - Relocating to Cincinnati OH

Mount Carmel is nice also. It is out, yet close to everything. Mason is good also. The closer you get to the city of Cincinnati, the higher the crime rate. Indian Hill is beautiful, but pretty expensive. Kings Mills is real nice also. Then there is ...
  14. VERY weird code today

That was an "OH MY GOSH" moment!! Several years ago , I had a guy vagal when we stood him up to transfer him to the chair. He went down, his heart stopped , and his respers stopped. We laid him back dow, called the code, and did one set of 2 breaths,...
  15. ER Pet Peeves

The drug seekers and all their excuses!!!
  16. Pet Peeves

I cannot stand someone who uses racial slurs!!!
  17. Incident or not?

Yes, it is an incident, and could be considered a med error also. Oxygen is considered a medication in some places because it has to be ordered and it is essential to the patient's well-being. Because it could have caused serious harm to the patient,...
  18. I saw something new and scary

    All I can say is: EWWWW!!!!!!!! :barf01: :barf01: :barf01:
  19. You will fail the NCLEX

What you need to tell that instructor if she tells you that you will fail the NCLEX is this: "Well, the way I see it is if I fail the NCLEX, then that reflects on how well you taught me, then, doesn't it?!!"
  20. Do you give up your seat for a doctor?

No, I usually do not give my seat to a doctor, unless it is one doc in particular. She has a disease that is sort of like muscular dystrophy, but not as bad. Plus, she is an awesome doc. The others have charting stations down the hall which they can ...

  23. Itching after TX???

We use Gold Bond lotion for our dialysis patients. While this will not treat the cause, because the cause is usually chronic, it really alleviates the symptoms very well.
  24. Narcotic Theft

You need to protect your nursing license and get out of there now!! No place is worth losing your license!!
  25. Received this email today and I am steamed!!!

I thought it was funny myself, and I have been an LPN for 20 years and an RN for one year now.
