What was the REAL reason you called off

Mental health days, actually sick and I've called in when my back hurts. Oh and lack of sleep.
  3. I work in a hospital that serves the majority of the inner city population. As a result, my medicine unit receives a lot of patients with drug use background. Most will want their prn morphine or dilaudid as soon as they can have it...they will watch...

To file a formal complaint or not?

How do you "half press" a JP drain? I thought you needed to decompress it fully so that it creates a negative pressure to "suck" drainage into the bulb? I'd complain, mostly because the order isn't clear.

    Ask A Stupid Question . . . .

Was changing a urostomy bag and a group of students were observing me. I said something to the effect of "...and this is similar to changing an ostomy bag, except with an ostomy, you use an ostomy bag and you don't attach the bag to a urine drainage ...

    Midwives and Nurses

Unless you're looking for information for Ob-Gyn nursing, there isn't much of anything about midwives on allnurses.

    Midwives and Nurses

Being a midwife is not specialty within nursing. Midwives go through an entirely different education and licensing route than nurses. You'd have better luck asking working midwives in the field than asking nurses on a nursing forum. Try the local mid...

    Unfair Shift Rotation

Finish your current rotation and negotiate with your manager. Say no to always working Monday night, and do it in a firm manner. Do not bring up the child vs no child thing. It is not your manager's job to care. Oh, and one more thing--childless staf...
  9. I've spent money on nice things like purses and vacations...but after paying off my student loans, and after making sure all my bills are paid. The nice things are my "treats", and as treats go, they are rare and planned for.

    Am I a bully?

There should be more to the story than what you are disclosing. I say things like "that's too bad that the unit is so busy today," and "it's really too bad/bad luck for you that your patient did this,"...never been written up for making those remarks...

    Cannot get any references.

Can she use a preceptor? Or nurses/managers from the Unit she did her preceptorship? Professors from school? Using fellow students is not a good idea on the basis that the students are not good judges of skills, and other attributes a manager may as...

Questions from My wheelchair about Nursing

I think it'd be very difficult for you to get a job as an RN. Many hospitals have cramped spaces--I am fortunate to be employed in the new wing of my hospital, where rooms and bathrooms and elevators and hallways are designed to be accessible for a w...

Early Morning Nurses (and Nursing Students)

Not a morning person. For my 0700-1900 shift, I try to be asleep by 2200, and I set my alarm at 0600. I get out of bed after hitting snooze once, brush my teeth and wash my face, and change into my scrubs. I aim to start my drive between 0630-0640. I...

How to find a RN vounteer position in Ontario

I don't think volunteer nurse position really exists--the liability wouldn't be something a Health organization would be willing to shoulder. Best bet would be to get a nursing job.

Nursing student asks nurses the question..

*raises hand* I'm one of those nurses who don't like having students, but seeing as I work in one of the two teaching hospitals in my city, not having students on my unit is more the exception than the norm. I have nothing against students themselves...

Best job market for nursing in Canada

Go rural. That's where there's more demands for nurses. Major urban centres have very little vacancies...which, if filled, are awarded by seniority. I graduated in 2011 from Vancouver and moved to rural Northern Alberta for my first job. Worked ther...

    Going to be fired?

I'm sorry you are going through this, but please try to learn from it. Ask for more orientation if you need to--other nurses manage to do all their work in their shifts, so it may be your time management skills. Try to cluster the things you need to ...

    Do lpns give vaccinations?

You can't refuse to give vaccine to your patient if it is ordered and your patient has given consent for it. What other things are you unwilling to do as a nurse? Give narcotics?

    Best shoes for clinicals

I wear a pair of Skechers with memory foam to work. My feet are happy.
  22. There is a big difference between family members being neglectful and a competent man deciding for himself the level of care he wishes to receive.
  23. I think, in due time, your questions will be answered as you progress through nursing school. Focus on getting through school and dealing with personal things first.

What type of soap do you use?

I am fond of Nivea body wash. That's what I use. And Bath and Body shower gels!

What was your first Nursing job?

    1) First nursing job was in a rural community hospital. Right now I'm working in a general internal medicine unit in an urban hospital. 2) Pros of rural: lots of learning opportunities, good way to really hone skills, good way to develop a strong fou...
