  1. Eyes & Thighs - is this an act of battery?

I have had many parents refuse eyes and/or thighs. We simply have them sign a refusal. I always let the parents know what I am going to be doing when babe comes and ask them if they are ok with it. Some nurses don't talk to the parents about it at a...
  2. Day in the life of OB RN?

I work OB in a small rural hospital and absolutely love it. The great part about rural OB nursing is that you do get to do everything - L&D, Mother Baby, Antepartum, the whole works. It is great to deliver a mom one shift and come back a day late...
  3. APA format software vs. Free Downloads

Another vote for PERRLA...used it for my BSN program and will continue to use it for my MSN.
  4. How many OB nurses are certified by NCC

I have my RNC-OB, and am the only one in our facility. I studied on my own, and did some online learning. I took the test over a year ago on computer and passed the first time. I have been an OB nurse (L&D, Postpartum, and Nursery) for 4 years.
  5. Question for Electronic charting for Labor, Delivery and beyond

We just switched to electronic medical records and are using CPSI. It is a bit cumbersome, with flowsheets and e-forms. The worst thing is that information does not populate from one flowsheet or form to another, so there is still a lot of double cha...
  6. Worst shift ever

Hugs to you....I have had a few OB shifts like that. I strive to provide the best possible care and always take it personally when patients, families, or doctors don't like me. I recently had a patient (who I have dealt with many times and thought I ...
  7. Anyone here an RNC?

I am an RNC-OB. While it was a personal achievement for me, I received NO financial benefit from my facility.
  8. Looking for the PERFECT ink pen ;)

Zebra F-401, Z grips, and TUL.
  9. How did your employer recognize Nurse's Day?

We have Lab Week, Health Information Week, Radiology Week, etc.....but NO Nurses' Week because "it excludes all the other very important employees".
  10. Frustrated new L&D nurse

I don't usually turn Pit off first....often variables will be resolved with bolus or position change. Of course, it depends on the other characteristics of the strip - do we have moderate variablility and accelerations present? If not, I am much quic...
  11. How long in bed for post C/S mothers?

We get them up and moving as soon as they can stand...usually around 4 hours post op. First time we walk to the bathroom, clean up, and walk back to bed. Second time (usually an hour or two later) we walk in the hall and remove Foley.
  12. Can someone help with this calculation problem?

This is an interesting problem, as we usually dose Pitocin in milliunit/min.
  13. I'm very disturbed by this

I recently did mouth to mouth on a patient with an oral airway in. Would that have been my first choice? Of course not! However, pt was in respiratory arrest (good pulses, cardiac rhythm) and there was not an ambu bag in the room. Crash cart was on i...
  14. Cheap on-line Masters programs

I am starting my Master's degree through Western Governors University. I have two friends who are students there and really like it.
  15. What is your schedule like?

I am scheduled for 3 twelves a week, including every other weekend. However, 1 or 2 of those shifts I may be put on call. We are only promised 3 shifts per pay period as full time ob nurses.
  16. What type of degree does your nurse manager have

My manager does not have a BSN, and she is an awesome manager. She did work in our department for 8 years before becoming manager, though. She has the balancing act down pat...spends plenty of time in the trenches, but also does a great job at the ot...
  17. bad luck streak-feeling down

Ok, it sounds like 2009 has just started with a BIG OB black cloud. The past month has been a nightmare for us as well...it seems like almost every delivery has been complicated. We have had stillbirth, IUGR, premature birth, Rpt C/S with acreta endi...
  18. Name Badge Credentials

We are getting new badges this year. There is a list of approved credentials. RNC is approved (but not RNC-OB). IBCLC is not approved either.
  19. How often are your postpartum vital signs and assessments?

Vag q 4 hrs for first 12 hrs, then q 12 hrs. C/S (after recovery - upon arrival to pp floor) q 30 min for first 2 hrs, the q 4 for first 24, then q 12. Of course, this is for stable pt - more often if needed.
  20. L&D vs postpartum vs newborn nursery

I work in a small hospital and we do all three. While L & D is my first love, I do enjoy coming in and getting to do mom/baby care, especially when I was that patient's labor nurse. I also love breastfeeding support, so I know I would miss mom/ba...
  21. Rnc?

ANCC does not offer OB certification, only NCC. The credential is now RNC-OB, RNC-MNN, RNC-LRN, or RNC-NIC. I use the RNC-OB on "official" documents (applications, professional correspondence, etc..), but only RNC in my every day charting. I personal...
  22. Skin to skin contact

We practice pretty much the same as zyna15 at our small rural hospital. We have really pushed in the past year to get all babies s2s, and delay eyes and thighs until after first feeding. We do bathe babies when we get back to pp, but not until mom an...
  23. Do You Like, Love or Dislike Your current job?

I love my job. I look forward to each shift. My job is stressful, but I have amazing coworkers, and find nursing to be very emotionally rewarding.
  24. Does your hospital have a policy on no walking after ROM?

We allow them to walk and even get in the tub as long as head is engaged.
  25. Ibuprofen & Percocet together?

I give the Ibuprofen as scheduled. I have often given 1 or 2 Percocet with the Ibuprofen.
