Should assaults on medical personnel be a Felony Offense?
Here's my opinion on assault and battery: Whatever a cop can press charges on, we should be able to press charges on. No one can argue with that.

Do men have priority when considered for Nursing School?
I was just talking with a guy at work trying to get into school, and he said that they really look more into GPAs but If say you had an equivillant GPA of a female some colleges will choose you over a woman, to increase their demographic. But I don't know for sure, every college I've talked to about "what they look for" has been a different experience.

Should hospitals charge interest on unpaid accounts?
I think people should be allowed to demonstrate on paper that they cannot pay the bill before interest is it accrued.

Caring for Jehovah's witnesses
I meant that this is the interpretation of the passage to a JW employee exclusively. This parable tells a JW that (in context) if they are a nurse, give people blood. My attitude a JW patient, well, I abhor the practice, plain and simple. Before pulling the religious freedom card, I could care less if you are a JW. I have complete disgust anybody of refusing to give a child a blood transfusion. Originally wasn't going to comment on it, only because their is nothing I can say that would change that. It's like scientology and psychiatry/"detoxing"... Children don't have the ability to choose their religion. What if a child gets a transfusion because it is an emergent situation and he's a complete John Doe? Then afterwards, the parents are found and are outraged. Will the child grow up and think he is damned? Or will he grow up and be thankful his parents weren't there to prevent him from living? I'd better shut up before I go on rant and anger someone.

Caring for Jehovah's witnesses
By "blood" they definitely mean meat/ pusle diet, which is Jewish practice. I don't think that was important in this exerpt, though, but the lesson behind the story: Do your job the way you were taught. Allow them their choice, but don't jeopardize your own faith. It's about religious tolerance, I think?

Family members that work your nerves!!!
Well I have no room to talk. My dad had a small heart attack less than two weeks ago prior to this story. He was having the same chest tightness (no pain, but he is diabetic) We took him to the ER there and waited and waited... I asked them several times how soon they could get his tests in and that he had a heart attack a short time ago... but they kept saying 'we'll get there soon as we can'... finally after a half an hour of being in that room and his tightness increasing I stole an EKG machine and gave him an EKG. Shortly after, my mother (who is a cardiac icu nurse) arrived and read it. It looked okay as far as she could tell, so we just continued to wait. It took almost an hour for a tech to get in there and give him a legit one. It was uncalled for. I assume they didn't think he was emergent because he didn't c/o pain, but if they would have just looked at the records they would have known I was serious that he had had a heart attack a few days earlier. They did end up admitting him and cathing him though. I know this was not the most legal thing to do, and some may not agree, but I'm not ashamed one bit for doing it.

Would you want your children to go into nursing?
My nurse mother cried when I told her I was going to go in to nursing. No, seriously. She cried.

Nursing School Wait Lists
If you didn't mind moving: St. John's hospital in Springfield IL has a good BSN program what I've heard. Hard, I'm told, but good. They have a program that will pay your tuition based on signing a contract to agree to work for them (3yrs-1/2 tution, 5yrs- tuition free) I thought they had a waitlist but according to the advisor, they don't. Their website is kinda bare when it comes to information but you can request some by mail. http://st-johns.org/education/schools/nursing/default.aspx

Nurses with ADD/ADHD?
I too have trouble with my memory in the workplace. I have been jokingly called 'dingdong' at work but people at work don't realize that it isn't carelessness, I am actually forcing myself to focus really hard and still having issues with my mind wandering! I'm such a hard worker they don't even think about it. Sometimes I wonder if becoming a PA is not a good thing to do... too much riding on doing things right and quickly, and not making mistakes. I know if I could overhaul my concentration though I could be a very good PA. My psychiatrist retired and I live in a different area now, but I didn't get much results from what he prescribed anyway. Sometimes I want to ask one of the nurses which psychiatrist to go to, but am afraid of what they will say, or if they will loose confidence in me, and since I'm newer this is not a good way to start a career. But I know I need to figure out a solution because I really want to be able to suceed!

THE WORST Experience/night of my life!
I'm not a nurse but everyone makes mistakes. The people that are gossipping about yours have probably made the same, possibly even worse mistakes! And you have to think that they were gossiped about too. I think a big part of working in healthcare is getting used to the social environment... in a week or to they will probably forget all about it.

Do you ever talk about your 'bad' patients?
Whoever says they've never talked about their troublesome patient is lying to you. Not only is this not a bad thing, it is also very necessary. It is important bonding mechanism for coworkers. It helps us get through the stress of the day.

How many females are "peeking" in this forum?
:idntdt:

Don't like to say I'm an RN. Long...
If there were no difference between an RN and LP/VN, every LPN would go to school another year for RN and get paid more!
-
Why are RN-RN relations at work 'bad', but MD-RN ones okay?
What comes from the peers is about prestige. It's just like a guy getting cheers from the bros for scoring a "hot chick". However, male doctors and female nurses alot of times do have complimentary personalities.

My Word... What Can't You Get at Wal-Mart??
The McDonalds of healthcare. Less nose-sucking and throat-swabbing for us in the ER. I'm all for it.

"No, I am not pregnant"
I have a really sensetive stomach to certain foods and get -very- bloated easily. Well, when I was in my CNA class, my instuctor pull me aside one day before clinicals and ask me if I was pregnat because she didn't want me to be in clinicals if I was far along! How embarassing! I'm 5'6" and 145!

Got Laid Off... Good time to Start in the Med Field... But WHERE???
You can take an EMT course and work as a tech in the ER. I took it through a community college so it was a full semester but other schools and even some hospitals may offer an accelerated course which, while a lot of information to learn, can be completed in only a couple of months. If you are in a reall tough spot and need a job fast, a good idea as mentioned above would be a secretary (or registration). Our ER has hired and trained techs directly out of their ER registration (and pay for the course). And that way you can see if you'd like that job before being in it.

Food Addiction?
I have a issue with food too. Well, am not overwieght. I'm 5'6" and about 147-150, a healthy weight. But, when I'm stressed I tend to binge till I get really sick gastro-intestinally sometimes. I've never thrown up but i have felt nauseated and will be in severe pain and -extremely- bloated for hours. I might do this a couple times a month-a couple times a week KNOWING I will cause myself the pain! I think to myself "well, I've only gained like 25 pounds in the last 2-3 years so I'm not worried about it", but I should be because I make myself sick. I mean, I'm lucky to have a good metabolism but, for example, in one binge meal I might eat an entire family sized box of macaroni and cheese, an 8 oz chicken breast, a pint of ben and jerrys, 2 bananas, and a frozen personal pizza. Maybe more sometimes. I think my gal bladder has sludge in it too because every woman in my family gets their gal bladder removed, some of them only in their late 20s. I put myself on a diet for a while and completely relieved symptoms but then stressful things happened a month later and I relapsed. I used to be on topamax for several years but was taken off it a couple years ago when this started. I wonder if going off of it triggered this/ being on the topamax was preventing the stress eating. But I can't take because it made me more depressed, and now my psychiatrist who I saw for years is retired anyway. As soon as my new insurance kicks in I'm going to find a new doc

do any of you like codes??
I have a love/hate relationship with codes right now! I think the "hate" only due to the fact I am really new to EMS, but codes are a big reason I chose a career in the ER. For example, the other day we had a ped and a neonate code at the same time and it was my first time dealing with a code of someone under the age of fifty. Our ER is small so I tech and order labs and do secretary work. Fortunately another person was on staff to do secretary work. Plus we were full so I had to assist with all the other patients too. It was just chaos , running around, listening the nurses with the codes shout things for me to get them and not being familiar where things were! But the outcomes were successful and that more than makes up for everything! I know it will be easier later when I get used to the chaos :)
