I do both PICU and NICU contingent. PICU is by far more challenging, as you get pretty much everything there EXCEPT for premie/RDS. Burns, hem/onc, hearts, trauma.....if it involves kids..you get it....

I think it would be very interesting to go from ortho/rehab to ICU. In rehab in particular I'm sure you get to work with many former CHIs and S/P MVAs who may have spent weeks in ICU and see them able...
I sure wouldn't want the unit clerk's job....its alot of work to keep a bunch of demanding hot headed nurses happy. We have some great kids who work as unit clerks. Many of them are pre med or nursing...
We draw ABG's off an A-lines or UACs, but never stick for them. If the patient has no line, a CBG will be collected....and the lab techs do them. In the rare occasion that a patient would need an ABG...
Well, I'm almost 70 years old and sometimes I cry when a patient dies....we all do. I work in MICU were most of our patients are very very sick. However, I know my patients are in the best possible...

I was taking care of an elderly man with pneumonia who had just been taken of Os after being on the vent for about two weeks. The resident wrote "wean for sats>95%". I politely asked her if she...

Oh my goodness. I have so many. Way back in the dark ages when I was a student nurse, I was working in a Catholic hospital. It was a Sunday morning and the priest was coming to give communion to all...

no need to worry ....my best friends at work are the guys. you get a bunch of women working together in a contained space and you are just asking for trouble. the guys in general are more laid...
I'll tell you the same thing I told my grandaughter who wanted to become an LPN because she wanted to start working sooner. Get your BSN. I have had a wonderful career as an LPN. Ten years in...
I'm way too old and tired to get into an RN/LPN war here. I was giving advice to a poster who asked a question. She now has her question answered..and the answer again is yes. I disagree with you...
I think we got our wires crossed here.... Were you referring to infection control nurses (epidemiology) vs ID (infectious diease) staff nurses? In that case, that would likely require an advanced...
Of course LPNs work in Infectious Disease....as well as RNs who do not have their BSN....and they don't have to have years and years of experience either. I'm an LPN and I work in MICU...and have...
You could always work contingent for the hospital and work "as needed". I semi retired and am only budgeted .2 (8 hours/week) in MICU, but work contingent for all the critical care units to keep my...
We do, but not many. We enjoy a full scope of practice in the critical care units, but the NMs will only hire an LPN if she/he is enrolled in school to be an RN or has some sort of "in." The last LPN...
I work in a 27 bed ICU. All of our experienced RNs who have been working 4 or more years take a charge class. They rotate the responsibility..they can sign up for charge duty if they wish...which...
We have four levels of "nursing support staff". Nurse technicians are either GNs who failed their boards, student nurses who are currently in their professional rotation, or graduates of nursing...
I have been an LPN for nearly 50 years, and most of that time has been spend in critical care. Fortunately, in the state and hospital I work in, LPNs have few restrictions. I can titrate my pressers,...

Ofcourse those of you who enjoy wearing "the hat" are entitled to do so and I am by no means suggesting that you shouldn't - just over look me when I chuckle as you walk by. ~~~~~~~~~~~...
I actually like ER, its one of the few shows that I make time for, though I wish they would give the nurses a more substantial role. I know most of its far fetched, but if I was too realistic, they...
I am delighted to read your post about volunteering at an NICU. Im certain that you would be a great asset. I would recommend contacting the volunteer services department of a hospital near you. All...

I work part time adult MICU and often float to NICU/PICU when I need a little extra cash or when staffing is really short and have gotten comfortable in both places over the years (not that I would...
None of our staff nurses do it on our own. We set up and assist with the procedure, but the surgeon or cardiac care clinition (advanced practice nurses who work directly with the suirgeons) pull the...

We have floating "clusters" where critical care nurses can be floated to other critical care units, med nurses float to other med units, and surgical nurses float to surgical units. Everyone can...
