ODP to RN
Hi, you are best off talking to the university you wish to apply for. They may let you APEL part of the course, but as the two are rather different, I don't think you would be able to just do a short course.

Nursing and the Ebola Virus
So now one of the Sheriffs department ( who entered the apartment without any PPE) is possibly showing symptoms too apparently. He walked into a medical centre where they called an ambulance for him. Yet more potential mistakes ...

Nursing and the Ebola Virus
I'm a theatre/OR nurse and said to my husband that people shown at Duncans apartment and in Africa weren't removing their PPE properly and having seen training footage of the extra steps being used for removal of PPE after contact with infected patients then yes, I can see contamination occuring. I do feel the Spanish nurse was pushed into stating it was basically her own fault because she may have touched her face with a glove though.

Nursing and the Ebola Virus
Was this the guy who turned down the medication so that his colleague could have it? I really do hope that he is getting better. The signs look good.

Is anyone else being pushed for 30 minute turnover times in between cases?
In the UK we have separate anaesthetic rooms. We send for our next patient as we get towards the end of the procedure. We then turn the room round in the time the patient is being anaesthetised. Our lists do not allow anaesthetic or recovery time. Then they wonder why we either run over or end up cancelling patients.

Big Mistakes to avoid while circulating...?
Never be afraid to ask if you don't know, if you try to blag it, you will get caught out. And as stated above, treat your colleagues with respect. They may be lower down the 'totem pole' but do have experience, so listen to their advice too.

Theatre Nursing: from the Philippines to the UK
Glad you're enjoying it. My trust has a very large Philippino community and has lots of get togethers. Does your trust have something like this? I work with a lot of them and love it when they bring in food they've cooked

Patient abuse
Good, I'm glad.

Patient abuse
I know I am UK based but I'm sure our NMC rule that states we are, as nurses, responsible for both our acts and ommisions of care still applies where you are. Therefore, as previously stated, if you do not report this, you are just as guilty as the supervisor. Do it through the correct channels and they will not be able to touch you.

Ritalin prescribed for daydreaming...
I'm currently watching the business of being born. One born every minute really shows the difference between UK and US births imo. Obviously, I only really get to see the ones who have to come to theatre in my job.

Phrases and puns unique to the OR (Tales of a new OR nurse)
Some of our anaesthetist call propofol 'Jackson Juice'. I work in gynae and patients usually come to theatre in disposable knickers (panties to most of you I think), so we perform 'knickerectomies'.

Learning about Sutures
I've been scrubbing for 2 years and I've found this REALLY useful. I tend to know sutures by their numbers a '9136' is the most commonly used in my theaters. Thank you CP.

da vinci robot poll
Yes, we have a Da Vinci robot. It's used for gynae oncology, uro-gynae and urology atm. As we've only had it for coming up to a year we're still getting used to it and it still takes at least twice as long to perform any given procedure. That has, however, come down from 3x as long

Sleeves in the OR
We HAVE to be bare below the elbows right across the NHS. Some theatre staff will sometimes wear a 'warm-up' jacket if the case is a long one and they're sat around for a while. They take it off though for any patient contact.
