  1. Recently at work we have begun to implement the new AORN standards including wearing jackets in the OR around open sterile supplies. I as a circulator don't generally have an issue with new expectations coming down the pike but after this being implemented several months ago, am a bit concerned with this. Prior to this new requirement, when I washed my hands, I washed all the way up to my elbows. Now when I wash my hands, I wash my hands to the sleeve of my jacket and that is it. The problem is that when a patient comes into the room and we have to help them over on the bed from the stretcher or back, many times my forearms are coming into contact with the patient while rolling. The next patient receives the same treatment but I have likely not changed my jacket or washed my forearms/sleeves. In an ideal world, I would have had the time and replaced my jacket with a clean one but in actual practice, I don't. How do others feel about this new expectation? It was put into place to prevent the spread of contamination and infection but in reality and practice, is it? I understand that there are a lot of practices that I may not agree on the effectiveness but I still follow them and will support their implementation but this is one that I just can't seem to wrap my head around the efficacy of it. Anyway, if you have a moment to share your ideas or thoughts, I would love to hear them. Thanks
  2. Thanks for the compliment. Send me your address. You do have enough room for us right. The wifey and me and 4 kiddos???? We'll even spring for supper.......
  3. I was just kidding of course. We want to plan a sort of family adventure and move with the kids somewhere and work there for a year or so. If Hawaii isn't it, we'll go somewhere else. I am certainly glad that I stumbled on this rather than waste my time searching for a job. I certainly have enough other things to do. Thanks all.
  4. I am fairly new to this site so I didn't know there was a Hawaii area. I will definately check it out. As for jobs in Hawaii, I hope there are some. I'm putting all my eggs in that basket.
  5. I'm not sure if that was a joke post and just a play on words or if it is for real.
  6. Is it the same for working anywhere other than the US that you must first find a job before you are eligible to work there. It almost seems as though you have to put the cart before the horse. I was interested in working in the Carribbean but again, you have to have a job to be sponsered prior to going or getting approved. Wouldn't employers want to know that you're approved prior to hiring you. or is it just understood that once hired approval is just a check or money order?
  7. I think that would be awesome. My wife and I met while in the Army there and would love to go back. Some day......
  8. Does the Army hire civilian nurses? Thanks
  9. Is it difficult to find overseas jobs? Where do you search?
  10. I am interested in OR jobs in the Chattanooga Area. Any large ORs in that area? thanks
  11. How about OR jobs in Hawaii?
  12. shodobe, i am interested in anything you can share regarding this. i was assigned to run a mock fire drill in my or and i am looking for a starting place. i am new here so can't pm you yet. could you pm me your email address? (edited by dianah)
  13. We had intended on witing until the spring of next year to start looking but if that is the case. We will start now to see if we find something that will fit. Thanks again for all your help. ruggster
  14. great! My wife was a little apprehensive about me marrying a native islander. Once she stopped yelling and hitting me we were able to have a conversation under the bathroom door. I explained that I thought it was just a joke. It took awhile for her to calm down but I think she's all set now. I'll wait another hour or so before I come out. Anyway, thanks for the information. I will probably contact the hospitals and see what the process is. The first post gave me one hospital to start with and I'll go from there. As for the expense, I am sure that it is expensive. Anything that is worthwhile is going to cost something. This is actually something that we will be looing at doing in about a year or so from now so I will have a chance to check on that aspect prior to going. Thanks again for the help.
  15. I think my wife would be opposed to me marrying a native but I will ask her. Thanks for the advice. Are those islands that you mentioned all english speaking? I thought from the little bit of research that I have done that they have quite the nursing shortage there. If that is the case, would obtaining a permit be that difficult? I would imagine that if they are looking for a nurse for some period of time they would be happy to apply for one for me.
