  1. How often do you work extra?

I try and pick up 4 or 8 hrs a week extra. Our incentive pay per union contract is time and a half plus $20 per hour, so it really is worth going in for a princess shift for me
  2. Tired of being talked to like I am stupid

I honestly don't think that docs keep up with how long you've been a nurse. I'm lucky to work with a compassionate group of Dr.'s who don't treat me as an idiot and take the time to explain things...
  3. Magnet designated hospital--anyone work at one?

We recently got our 2nd certification and thankful I work nocs. All the management and magnet team were there to meet the survey team in the front lobby like they were royalty and reallY schmoozed...
  4. Coworker talking on cell phone while counting narcs!

I would say fair punishment would be to chop off an ear! Sorry couldn't help
  5. What is the best book available on ventilators?

I'm sure there's one out there but I haven't seen one, just the basic fundamentals like you'd find in a med/surg book. If you're looking into home vents try your local home medical equipment...
  6. Me Time- Katie5's Vent

I've learned to appreciate different points of view but I've realized some people are just whiny and love to toot their own horn. I can usually pick these ones out and will either stay far away or...
  7. Cant keep a watch working!

Haha, I didn't mean to imply anything by my post. I worked as a CNA for $7? An hour at 20 years old and didn't have a pot to pee in with a 1 year old. That watch helped me build my credit and...
  8. Cant keep a watch working!

I invested $400 in a good watch 16 yrs ago and it still works awesome. It's waterproof to 50m since I wanted something to withstand the water when I worked as a CNA. Unfortunately they don't make this...
  9. Microbiology

After taking chemistry and entire A & P sequence I found micro to be easier and more enjoyable as I had seen some of the course contents in previous
  10. What to do about pay?

When you are a nurse you will understand how the OP has a valid complaint. It's essential to look at the whole situation, she is getting paid less than a new grad and she had to fight to get that...
  11. Do I chart or do I take care of my patients?

There's high probability somthing would get missed or fall to the wayside with 5 or 6 pts on day shift. I never have more than 5 at night and day shift never has more than 4 at any given period. I...
  12. Do I chart or do I take care of my patients?

End of shift summary and keep it simple and
  13. Pt Teaching & dealing with Q&A....help!

I wouldn't say 'I don't know', what I say sometimes when unsure of a question is 'if you can give me a few minutes I can get some handouts for you to read at your own pace'. It takes time be able to...
  14. Do you ask questions after you try and figure it out on your own or before? Sometimes asking a lot of questions that can be problem solved on your own can look like your not ready for complex...
  15. I really think that's condescending to say LTC nursing isn't 'real nursing'. It's just a different type. Some nurses love LTC and find it very rewarding work. I myself love taking care of the elderly...
  16. Do I chart or do I take care of my patients?

We have had computer CBE only for a few years now. It will get easier for you! Now we don't have to chart a note every 4 hrs unless I have a patient circling the drain, just chart an EOSS and KISS....
  17. "Progressing towards expected outcomes", is what I chart when there has been no change in pt during my shift. I don't get to use it too often though as something always arises-nausea, uncontrolled...
  18. My first rapid response (Sorry, this is long)

It is a scary thing when it's your patient. I had a pt with abd pain who had h/o etoh abuse, smoking and needed bipap but refused to use it. I walked her to the br at 0600 and she wasn't quite right...
  19. Med/ Surg Patient to Nurse Ratio

The unit I work on is surg/tele with some med/surg overflow. Ratios are 5:1 at noc with one aide and 4:1 when we don't have an aide. We have an IV team and charge nurse that will enter our orders...
  20. Magnet facility

My hospital has been magnet for 4 years now. I love where I work; I feel like our standards are higher than other hospitals in the area may be. I don't know if it would really make much of a...
  21. Trach tubes popping out of patients

I did take care of a pediatric trach puller, sometimes 3-4 times a day. She only did it with her parents for attention, never when a nurse was on duty. I did have to change her trach one noc because...
  22. "Think" about what you say!!!

Ugh yes, I do agree some patients (in response to your previous post) will take everything the nurse says very literally. Not to start a new rant but men can be the worst patients. And I know to be...
  23. "Think" about what you say!!!

I believe that people who think wording is no big deal have probably never been a patient. Neither have I but I can only imagine how a nurse coming off as unsure would be anxiety provoking to an A...
  24. Is nursing REALLY for you?

Yes, it's really for me. I couldn't imagine at this point to leave the bedside. I don't think in this profession you can ever know it all. It's always changing. I like the challenge and to be kept...
  25. med error not sure how to feel!

It is a terrible feeling I know to make an error. I haven't had another nurse point it out but have caught it myself. The pharmacy was the one who first made the error in my case by starting fragmin...
