Nurses from many other countries come to america and compete with us for jobs. These people are used to (comparatively) poor working conditions and less wages, so the companies prefer them.
Companies in america, particularly rinky dink rehab and LTC facilities hire insufficient nursing staff because they can get away with it. Even though more than enough nurses are available for hire, they simply CHOOSE to hire less nurses because that big fat CEO needs a brand new gold walking stick. Nurses are usually female and often are of minority backgrounds and are immigrants so they are easily exploited (compared to white male amercians, or a "WMA" as eddie vedder would say).
In nursing, for some bizarre reason, it is considered completely acceptable normal working conditions to run around like a dog without taking time to tend for basic self care such as using a bathroom, eating, or drinking. These are considered luxuries in nursing. This perception on behalf of nurses that it is normal and acceptable to just work 8 or 12 hours straight without a proper break ENABLES these corporations to habitually understaff nurses. When you have a group of women, minorities, people who speak english as a second language from poor countries, who have been conditioned to think sub par working conditions are acceptable, is anyone really surprised when the corporations keep things the way they are?
The end result is nurses cannot get jobs, and those with jobs are miserable usually because the working conditions are so poor. Originally we were told lies that the working conditions were poor because of a "nursing shortage", which sometimes this was true, but usually it was a complete lie. They cannot get away with that bullsh*t anymore since it is obvious most of us can't find jobs due to the companies refusing to hire, and yet we still see nurses in hospitals, rehabs, LTCs and other facilities being worked like dogs. It's just normal.
I look around my area at ALL these crappy facilities which hire ignorant people who barely speak english, minimally trained at fly by night schools, some of which were not properly accredited by a state board of nursing, fresh off the boat because they are easily exploited. They grossly understaff nurses, undersupply units, and they just get away with it because they make a concentrated effort to avoid american emloyees if possible.
I work a rehab center and I have watched this facility trade hands recently from a relatively good hospital company to a notoriously bad nursing home company. On payday today every single employee was underpaid, they cheat us out of hours, they cheat our rate, they hide our "benefits" from us so they can scam us. No one is paid a full 75 hours, even though we don't always take breaks and usually stay after shift doing hard work. The patients are not supplied basic things lthey need for dignified care, like peri wipes.
Conditions for nurses at work are no better than they were when there were less nurses.
This country is pretty horrible in general. I always knew it but now my eyes are wide open.
