  1. How do I develop Critical Thinking/Backbone?

Amy-- One quick suggestion. When I was being precepted, at about the same point where you are, my preceptor told me to stop coming to her describing a situation and asking her what to do--instead, she wanted me to come to her, describe the situation...
  2. which schools turn out better nurses?

I graduated from NHCTC Manch two years ago. What do you mean by busywork? Is it the 24-page care plans? (redone 5x) :rollI used to find preparing drug cards tedious, but that really does serve you well later on---you do really need to know a lot ab...
  3. which schools turn out better nurses?

I'm an NHCTC grad. Hands down I've been most impressed with St Anselm's grads--they really seem to know their stuff. Not that grads from the other NH institutions are slouches, but St. A's turns out very well-prepared new grads.
  4. Interview Problems

I had a very bad interview for my ADN program several years ago. The interviewer, one of the professors, was just plain obnoxious (wonder what was going on in her life that day?); she said a number of rude and unprofessional things to me, such as "I...
  5. Report Sheet

PM me your email addy and I'll email mine. I'm in ICU, so it's a full page per pt, but you might be able to modify it. (I don't know how to attach it here ?
  6. Need Help with Abbreviations, Medical Terminology

Absolutely should be circumflex--I was a'running on empty :rotfl:
  7. Need Help with Abbreviations, Medical Terminology

Just got off shift; I'll help with what I can: lcx Left circumferential (coronary artery) s/p "status post" = "recently had" mvr mitral valve regurgitation abd abdomen/abdominal tee trans-esophageal echocardiogram i just had no idea what thi...
  8. Clip-on Stethoscope Lights

They are often on ebay. Do a search there for "drug rep light." For free, I dunno where to find one.
  9. shaky hands

I have the same problem. Cutting out caffeine, getting adequate rest, and maintaining a constant blood sugar (i.e., avoiding both hypo and hyperglycemia--either makes me shake more) helped me a great deal. My physician would not entertain B-blocka...
  10. Dear Daughter starts her journey through NS today

I earned my ADN in May (passed the NCLEX in early July) and my 18-yo daughter started an accelerated BSN program this week! I'm hoping I can be of help to her as she makes her way through the program.
  11. LNA Questions

Actually, the statute doesn't specify a length of service. My dau was reimbursed by the state after only three weeks--she filed the paperwork the day after she started working as an LNA.
  12. Did You Get A Sign On Bonus?

$2K for new grads at one of two hospitals in the biggest city in NH. The other hospital does not offer sign-on bonuses. Personally, I would have preferred a higher starting wage, and tried to negotiate that in lieu of the bonus--but no go--starti...
  13. I took my NCLEX-RN on friday at 9am--still don't know!!!!

Congrats, Rose! I found out this morning that I passed too!
  14. I took my NCLEX-RN on friday at 9am--still don't know!!!!

Rose --I so sympathize! I'm in exactly the same boat. NH doesn't do quick results. Normally, your license # is posted on the BON website by 7am of the business day after the test--which should have been this am--and still nothing! The wait is kil...
  15. I Passed!!!! I Am Now An Rn!!!!!!!

CONGRATS! I still have to wait for tomorrow for my results :-(
  16. Anyone else feel really horrible after taking NCLEX?

Take heart, S_t_b_RN! Several of us are in the same boat; we can wait together. :icon_hug: Are you doing anything fun for the 4th to keep your mind off the NCLEX? I'm leaving early tomorrow for a 24h stay at a girls' camp, filling in for one of t...
  17. NCLEX-RN Review Made Incredibly Easy!

Just to clarify, W_in_L, I used the NCLEX-RN Q&A Made Incredibly Easy, which does not include specific content review (That's in the NCLEX_RN Made Incredibly Easy); the Q&A book consists of 3,500 questions with their rationales. I used Saun...
  18. NCLEX-RN Review Made Incredibly Easy!

I agree that Saunders is probably the most complete content review book. I also used NCLEX-RN Q&A Made Incredibly Easy and found it was a good resource to switch to when you tire of Saunders. I actually owned four books/CDs and I would rotate ...
  19. Anyone else feel really horrible after taking NCLEX?

Many, many "Which patient do you see first" (so prioritizing) questions. And I know what you mean, Christine, in most instances the four pts presented were either all so complex, or all so oddly stable, that the questions really were head scratchers...
  20. Anyone else feel really horrible after taking NCLEX?

Christine, I took mine this AM in Waltham and I stopped at 75 as well. I feel exactly the way you do! I went in confident of my ability, yet walked out completely dazed and feeling I must have failed. Fingers crossed for both of us!
  21. STARTING IVs............OMG..............

Well, here in Southern NH, none of the programs teach IVs--not the ADNs, not the BSNs. We are told we will be taught the skill at our first job. I'm currently in NG orientation and of the 12 of us from 4 different schools, no one had ever done an I...
  22. shift differential question

Southern NH: $1.75 eves, $4.50 nocs, 20% extra in addition to shift difs on the weekend.
  23. Driving too far to simply avoid a clinical instructor?

Avoiding a toxic instructor is worth the drive to anywhere. What you lose in time/sleep, you will make up in emotional energy. If you must have this teacher, prepare well for each clinical day and fly well under her radar. My experience with such in...
  24. NLN Entrance Exam

It is a general test of high school level knowledge, so I went to the local library and took out GED prep books in algebra, geometry, and all the science sub-subjects. They were excellent to use for review. I found the science was hard to study for ...
  25. Nursing School: Easier or Harder?

Not harder per se, but this is definitely the most stressful educational experience I've ever had (have a previous BA and halfway to an MA). As others have said, the volume of material to be covered in a very short period of time is challenging, es...
