    Is this correct??????

I wouldn't have given. Besides, like Sara said, the kid would probably fall asleep. Benadryl isn't my first choice for seasonal allergies. You think the doc would order something like Claritin or Zyrtec for that that is non-drowsy.

    Frustrated to no end.....

As far as I know, CPS will not investigate this. Our county health dept. considers it a nuisance, not a health concern. We have had parents call the health department to report us (the school nurses) because we would not release the names of who had ...

    "Yinz"

I don't use it at work because I try to keep my speech professional but it's perfectly OK when yinz go dahntahn to watch the Stillers n'at or go out to get some pierogies.

    Salary info help needed

It's really hard for us to give advice for a position like that. They could be offering anything from $10/hr up to a really nice salary. Unless someone from here is familiar with where you are applying, you will really need to find out from the emplo...

why do doctors order more vitamin d tests than anything?

My doctor said she is ordering it on everyone now. I live in the Pittsburgh area and we are lacking sunshine most of the year. Mine was low, so I am taking supplements. I did some reading about it and it looks like lots of people are lower that we re...

    Spring Break

NO spring break for us. We got our break when we were snowed in for a week! Now it's all make up days. Not complaining, though. At least we didn't lose our power like lots of our neighbors.

    Student wants to go home...

I call with any student that insists on going home. If I don't, they go to the bathroom, use their cell phone to call parent then the parent c/o that I wouldn't sent their ever-so-sick child home. I tried to battle this when I started working here, b...

    What would you have done?

Every time a parent c/o my judgment, I get worried. I posted here once about a situation parents were upset with and everyone agreed I did the right thing. You did the right thing, too. There are always parents out there that won't be happy no matter...

    The Good and Bad

SAMHSA has a ton of free substance abuse stuff and the PA liquor control board has lots of ETOH posters.

    Speaking of Head Lice...

All schools get lice. One way to handle it if you don't want to send home a letter when a child has lice is to send home information at the beginning of the year. "Now that we are back in school you should be aware of any common problems that are fre...

    Drug testing students

Unfortunately, many school boards could care less what the NASN's position is on things. I have tried to use position statements in the past.

    Drug testing students

If you do drug testing, what do you do with the results? Do you search the student? Notify police? Notify parents? Suspend the student? What criteria would you need to conduct a test? Would you need parental permission? We do not do drug testing but ...

How Do You Stay Healthy Working in the Health office?

First year I was sick, sick, sick. Pink eye, several colds, pneumonia. It just went on and on. Now-I never get sick. Haven't taken a sick day in the past 2 years. Not sure what to tell you except once your immune system gets used to the local crud, y...

    RN babysiting gig gone south

I would also have never trusted that the 15 year old would have been home in a reasonable amount of time. 15yo kids can often "forget" to come home to watch their younger sibs.

What do your students call you!

I go with Mrs. Lastname. I never really liked it before, but I feel I deserve the same respect as the teachers.

Nursey things that you'll NEVER say again.

I am much more sympathetic with panic attacks since having them myself. I would never tell a patient to "relax" or that "nothing is wrong-you are fine" You can't relax and you're not fine.

Scheduled to work called out due to snow--can I be fired?

I assume you are in the mid-atlantic area like Pennsylvania or Maryland. The snow we have experienced here the past few days is extraordinary. We have been declared as a "state of emergency" and many of the roads have been impassable. Even the Pengui...

    School breakfast

I still have to campaign for personal responsibility, especially at the high school level. If you go hungry a couple of days, you should be able to figure out that you need to eat breakfast or pack a granola bar. Why should grants or other funding be...

    Thank You. For Everything.

You sound like a great young lady/man. As a high school nurse, I deal with much lack of appreciation, but it's kids like you that make it worth while!

    School breakfast

I guess you are much more sympathetic than I am. I just think by the time you are 16-18 years old, you should throw your own granola bar in your backpack if you're running late. I do understand what the studies show about performance, etc. but I am a...

    School breakfast

Martha, I'm the one who posted that. We do have a school breakfast program. It's a pretty good one, too. I'm talking about kids who get up late, drive to school in their cars that are nicer than mine, then decide around 9AM that they can't survive ti...

Rules for the School Nurse's Office

#21. If the kid is sleeping in your class do not sent them to me to lay down for the rest of the class period. They view this as a reward. #22. You are in high school. I know you have food at home. You are also not underweight. If you forget to eat b...
