  1. New nurse ?- SVE's when closed/thick/high

This is not just a "new nurse" thing! I have very short fingers and sometimes I just can't find the darn thing even after all my "tricks". Sometimes it'll be anterior but because it's so high I'm trying to find it posteriorly & I'll miss it. Take...
  2. Policy on leaving AMA w/baby?

We are very particular about what is considered AMA. If a patient wants to leave early & there is no medical reason for her or the baby to stay then she is just discharged & is not leaving AMA. If there is a medical reason for her to stay &am...
  3. Maternal death

How tragic for your unit Hopefully there will be some kind of debriefing where the people involved can talk about what went well & what didn't. My unit has taped simulated emergencies where it can be watched later & discussed. Sometimes no ...
  4. What's your most interesting/scary case?

She ruptured her uterus at some point (which is why there was vernix in her abdomen) but small enough that she was stable until we got back for the tubal. And then she quickly deteriorated. But did recover & went home with a healthy baby.
  5. What's your most interesting/scary case?

Sudden decompression of a very distended uterus.

  7. What's your most interesting/scary case?

Weirdest case for me in recent memory was a G2P1 at term, 1st baby was a c-section, 2nd baby successful VBAC. Nice delivery, variables at the end but she was complete & pushed the baby out quickly. Happy recovery, breastfed, mom & baby stable...
  8. PLEASE HELP!!! so embarassed about sweating!

I wear a cotton tank under my scrubs. The tank absorbs before it can show thru the scrubs. Probably a little hotter for me but worth it. I have to wear a tank anyways because otherwise I show too much when I bend over
  9. Regional differences in OB terminology ....

Old hospital (west coast): C-section New hospital (midwest): C-birth Old hospital: NICU (nick-U) New hospital: NI (N-I)
  10. Directed pushing

In this case the molding was from the great open glottis pushing she was doing with an asynclitic head. None when we started, lots when we stopped. It was the 1st time I really saw that open glottis was just as effective for her as closed glottis.
  11. Directed pushing

I am a total believer in open glottis pushing after an experience I had last week. Primip with epidural, pushing for 3 hours. She ended up with a c-section unfortunately but the OB doing the surgery told her "I can tell how hard you worked pushing be...
  12. My ALMOST 5 year old refuses to poop on the potty!

My daughter took forever too. She was peeing for over a year, but always asked for a diaper to poop in. She would hold it if we didn't give her a diaper. I could go on & on about the battles related to this! We saw our pediatrician many times, sh...
  13. Uterine rupture & maternal code

I had a patient a few months ago who had a successful VBAC, some severe variables the last 5 minutes but she was complete & delivered a few minutes later. She was stable in recovery, breastfed, no pain or bleeding & then we went back for a ro...
  14. How Much Fentanyl?

The last place I worked we gave 100mcg q hour x3. It was the only narcotic we gave IV. That 3rd dose really didn't help much unless they spaced it out much more than an hour. Current place gives 50-100 mcg but we also have nubain as a choice & mo...
  15. Bras

My favorite was a bra from Anita. I ended up buying 5 of them at $50+ each but totally worth it. Great nursing bra site: http://www.breastisbest.com They have a page where you can match up good bras for your boob type. And all the bras have editorial...
