  1. My sister-in-law came to live with us a couple of years ago, we looked after her for the last 2 months of her life(she had ovarian ca with mets.)She developed cellulitis, wanted iv antibiotics which we hung for her tid, she had an iv to the end, called it her lifeline. sj.
  2. Can you not send a copy of her e-mail to your nursing association?, Where I come from, that request is a violation of nursing Standards of practice and is unsafe. Remember...its your license not the supervisors. sj.
  3. Thanx for the input. .Susanmary...so if there is numbess, tingling, inability to swallow, is it reasonable to assume that there has been nerve damage intraoperatively?...Specifically, cranial nerves X1(glossopharyngeal) and X( Vagus). So , is that something you would report to physician right away, or could it wait until morning? thanx again. sj.
  4. Susanmary.... Thanx for the information, it gives me a much broader perspective on what I should be watching for etc. etc.and a protocol to set in place for myself. Thanx again. sj.
  5. We have begun admitting post-op endarterectomy pts. to our unit, and we have no standards of care for this . Just wondering,(other than neuro vitals) what the protocol is from other places,? Thanx. sj.
  6. Was just wondering about the prevalence of M.R.S.A. in hospitals out there. What kind of precautions are used, what kind of protocols are followed. Thanx in advance for your input. sj.
  7. Carmen......You don' t wanna be sitting in a rocking chair at 75, muttering" I wish I had done it". I was an l.p.n for a hundred years before I went back to nursing school at 31 and graduated at 33. It didn't matter to me if I ever worked as an R.N., just something that I wanted to complete. I have been working now for 17years(FT), and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!!!!! Go for it,what do you have to loose? sj.
  8. We too were taught (16 years ago) not to place IV's in the affected side. I, for the most part use the non-affected side. I site the iv in the forearm, rather than the hand. When putting an iv in the affected side, hypervigilance is required to observe the site for redness, swelling.etc. etc. sj.
  9. Dear realnurse/lpn... So what now.? What are your plans for the future? Looking forward to hearing from you. sj.
  10. Is the survey for American nurses only? Thanx. sj.
  11. I think that hazard pay would be an awesome idea!!! However, when one lives in Canada, it goes with the territory. I live 30 miles from where I work, many has been the time that I have made it to work and people in town are snowed in! Canadian nurses would all be gazillionaaires if we got hazard pay, every time we ventured to work in the snow.We get snow here where I live, from October until mid-April!!! sj.
  12. Having not ever worked in the American system......please enlighten me and share what theses surveys are all about......how often, how long, actions taken based on these surveys and by whom? Thanx. sj.
  13. I frequently find older women to be more demanding, Seems like since they have been the caregivers all their lifes, when they get sick, they want everything done for them. Many like beached baluga whales. ??How about the patients who walk past the nursing station,,saunter to their rooms, then ring the callbell, you answer and then they ask you for analgesia. Twenty minutes post injection they have somehow recovered enough to walk outside to the smoking area!! Go figure!! sj.
  14. Hello to you Michelle in Auatralia. Just read your post, could you be more specific... when you say holistic, do you mean the same as "alternative, complementary practices? Thanx for sharing.... sj.
