  1. Sleeping for Night Shift

I WORE EAR PLUGS. EVERY LITTLE NOISE USED TO WAKE ME UP UNTIL I GOT EAR PLUGS.
  2. chemotherrapy administration

We do chemo and none of us are certified. What would you be certified in?
  3. Infusing TPN

I agree, WhiteCaps. In home care, we draw blood from a central line all the time.
  4. Do any of you belong to a union?

Our county nursing agency is unionized- New York State Nurse's Association. I believe very different from other unions because it's for nurses only. Very proactive for the nurse. Very good union.
  5. How to become PICC RN

I just did a search and came up with several hundred choices. I did mine in Buffalo, NY. You could do a search to find one in your area. Try PICCexcellence.com.
  6. How to become PICC RN

There are many courses where you can learn to insert a PICC line. I believe you need to be proctored 3 or 4 times before you can do an insertion on your own. The course I took was 1 day and we inserted a PICC on eachother. I work in home care and do ...
  7. Abbreviation:PO vs OR

We have 3M for homecare documentation, and the abbreviation used to be OR, but now it is spelled out oral. Everyother place it's been PO.
  8. ProTime Machines

Are they available for home health nurses to use? I haven't heard of any nurse having one. I have heard of patient's having and using them. It would save us alot of time if we could use them.
  9. aspirate before flushing mediport?

I see the harm if you don't aspirate! I've seen infiltrations with ports, so yes, aspirate first.
  10. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

I haven't taken it since 96 but remember that it wasn't that bad. The people I took it from were very helpful. I don't believe anyone failed. Good luck!
  11. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

I haven't taken it since 96 but remember that it wasn't that bad. The people I took it from were very helpful. I don't believe anyone failed. Good luck!
  12. what qualifies?

Maybe the VA would come draw his blood. In our area the VA has "home based primary care" which is similar to a CHHA, but do only Vets ofcourse. I had a patient who only needed venipunctures (protimes) and I refered him to this VA home care, and they ...
  13. P.I.C.C. lines ! need advice

I WORK IN HOME HEALTH, AND WE DO NOT BOTHER TO DECLOT PICC LINES. IF WE'RE UNABLE TO FLUSH OR INFUSE,WE SIMPLY PULL IT AND PUT ANOTHER ONE IN. RARELY PUT PICC LINES IN IN THE FIELD, BUT DO MID LINES. THEY ARE PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE FOR IV ANCEF (MID LI...
  14. What degree does your administrator have?

    MASTERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH
  15. What degree does your administrator have?

Masters. Our county agency is also pushing for all BSN's.
  16. computer technology and liability

WE DO NOT HAVE ANY POLICY AT ALL. OUR LAPTOPS ARE LEASED, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. I KNOW ONE OF THE NURSES SPILLED A COKE ON HERS (IT WASN'T HER COKE, IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE'S IN THE WAY) AND IT RUINED THE COMPUTER. NOBODY MADE A FUS...
  17. computers in home care (again).

I posted a thread about our agency allowing nurses to be behind in paper work up to a month's time. We had a staff conference yesterday and complained about this continued problem, which is becoming increasingly worse because of lap top computers. Ou...
  18. computers in home care (again).

Thanks Karen for the detailed info. I printed a copy of all the replies for our director. PattiRN, we are in Allegany County in the Southern Tier. I would not recommend ClinDoc at all, but we haven't tried another program so I cannot give an educated...
  19. pay for missed lunches and overtime

FRANKIE, I WANT TO WORK WHERE YOU WORK. I USED TO WORK FOR AN EXCLUSIVELY HOME INFUSION COMPANY AND GOT PAID WELL, BUT LIVING IN A RURAL AREA, IT DID NOT KEEP ME BUSY ENOUGH. NOW THE HOME INFUSION COMPANIES CONTRACT WITH OUR AGENCY AND DO NOT SEND TH...
  20. pay for missed lunches and overtime

Our agency pays us double time for OT, but we're still sick of doing it. Home care is not what it's cracked up to be. To keep up with the paper work, a nurse needs to work OT. We are unionized, but still have to battle for every benefit. I'm going to...
  21. late charting in home car

In our agency, some nurses chart up to a month after a home visit. Our union rep told us today that this is illegal. She said we should be doing as in hospitals if we are doing it like this. In other words write "late entry." What do other nurses and...
  22. I WORK IN HOME CARE AND HAVE A PATIENT THAT HAD THE SAME THING. IT WAS FROM "WEARING DOWN" OF HIS PENIS BECAUSE HE ALWAYS WORE A LEG BAG AND IT TUGGED ON THE PENIS. THERE IS A NAME FOR IT BUT IT ESCAPES ME NOW. THE UROLOGIST WAS NOT SURPRISED BY IT. ...
  23. rural nursing

I DON'T BELIEVE RURAL NURSING IS A SPECIALTY, IN FACT I THINK YOU HAVE TO BE A JACK OF ALL TRADES. I WORKED IN A SMALL HOSPITAL WHERE I LEARNED ALOT OF THINGS THAT NURSES IN A CITY WOULD NEVER HAVE THE OPORTUNITY TO DO. I AM DEFINATELY A MASTER OF NO...
  24. About Central lines....

Whatever medicines that cannot be "pushed" through a regular IV cannot be pushed through a PICC or central line. For instance, you wouldn't push Vancomycin. Hope this helps.
  25. HH and Computers

I feel the same way janieh does, but that's because I work for the same agency as she does! I hate the ClinDoc. We are being forced to use it. Does anyone else know about ClinDoc and does it ever work?
