  1. Feels good to be back among allnurses!

Cheerfuldoer, I thought you were relocating to Indy? I know it's not that warm there! I wanted to ask you about some hospitals because 2 of my kids go to Indiana Wesleyan in Marion. God bless whereever you are. Lynn

  3. Definition of Rural

Small city hospital was 20 minutes away, tertierary hospital 80 miles away (rural NewYork State).
  4. considering home health extremely scared

I agree with Ren. If you do home health full time, 80% of work is paper (computer) work. Alot of regulations. Many changes. Home health is complicated.
  5. Just a fun thread - Cleanest bathrooms on the road?

Thanks for the library tip! Never thought of that. We could start a thread on the worst bathrooms, too!
  6. Second Degree BSN

I finished RN to BS last year. 2 very intense years. No tests, but alot of writing. Sometimes I thought tests would have been easier. Glad I'm done!
  7. patient lingo...

Our pastor visited a male church member shortly after being admitted to our small rural hospital. The patient told the pastor he had "unstable vangina."
  8. computerized charting

We use the ClinDoc program. It was terrible at 1st, much better now (after 2 years). The laptops are heavy, and very unrealistic to take them into the homes. We were forced to continue to use the program, even though we all went crazy trying to learn...
  9. patient acuity system

I searched this forum and only found 1 thread on acuity system for home care. Could other home care nurses give me an idea of how your work load is kept equitable? Any ideas would be helpful. Our workload is not even, and management has no idea what ...
  10. Do Nurses Need Chemistry Education?

I took chemistry at Roberts Wesleyan (in Rochester, NY) that was specifically for health care profesionals. Probably it was alot easier than the chemistry your school requires. The professor was great (Jay, can't remember his last name). Since I was ...
  11. I was very excited to hear about a travel position in a small town in Colorado near where I have relatives living. I emailed my resume and skills list and spoke with the recruiter. She said the only thing I needed to do was interview with the hospita...
  12. Drawing bloods through IV line

I do home care and at times we are unable to get the specimen to the lab right away, sometimes more than 2 hours, and I have never had a specimen hemolize. I don't see a problem drawing blood from a saline lock. If it was a hep lock you would have to...
  13. What skills and qualities are needed?

Flexible and creative. Ability to work independently. Able to tolerate cockroaches. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound (couldn't resist).
  14. Nursing Process and Nursing Care Plans

Probably most every nurse uses the nursing process without even knowing it, every day. I work in home care and I can give you one example from just today. I was seeing a lady for one kind of wound, but she informed me about another one (one that the ...
  15. Calling all HH Nurses, roll call

MASH is not really reality. It's an old movie turned TV series based on the Korean war. Very funny. Lynn
  16. Average tt/mileage

I work in rural NYS for a county agency and have a company car. On average I travel about 80-100 miles per day, usually 4-7 patients per day. Nice to have a company car.

  18. Calling all HH Nurses, roll call

Josie K, Did you ever watch MASH on TV with Major Margaret Hoolahan? She was a nurse.
  19. ready for travel to Co, but position already filled

RNCOPPER, Thanks for the info. It would have been my first assisnment. Live and learn.
  20. back to hospital after 11 years in home health

renerian, Good luck. The way things are in home health these days, I've thought about making the change myself. What unit are you working on?
  21. Patient assessment for PICC line insertion

hansenbitten, I think children would be same as adults, mid-arm circumference. Frankie, As for pre-assessment tool, we ask the following: 1.Dominant hand 2.Any fractures, dislocations or other trauma to either arm or shoulder? 3.Radiation therapy to ...
  22. My first day

Sorry Nance. You may want to read a few more posts on the home health section. I believe Rusty has another job. Home health is not easy. If you can master the paper work, you'll be fine. It's a different kind of stress than hospital nursing, but defi...
  23. 10/1 Oasis Changes

Probably nobody's answering you because nobody can shed any light! We had a teleconference presented by Diane Odel (not sure if the last name is spelled right) from Beacon Health. She's very knowledgeable and good at explaining, but I still don't hav...
  24. Can someone answer this Question for me?

At the University of Rochester in New York, there is a program for people with a Bachelor's degree who can get their RN in 1 year. I have heard of other programs like this around the country. It's one intensive year I've heard.
  25. Just want to say "Hello"!

Waggy-2, Where is your hospital? Do they need nurses? I live about 90 miles south of Buffalo in the southern tier, near Olean. I have worked at a rural hospital, but they no longer have an ICU or OR. I presently work as a home health nurse for a coun...
