  1. Is OB/GYN an eye opening for young MALE student?

I have been an obstetrics nurse for MANY years, and have worked with a few gentlemen (and I say that because that is what they were) who were among the best OB nurses I have ever known. If you think about it, many of the patients have a male doctor....
  2. why?

I have many years as an OB nurse, and have worked with many nurses. Granted, nearly all of them were female, but one of the best was a male--with a wife and three kids. I'd let him care for me or my loved ones any day! :loveya::yelclap:
  3. Unbelievable Family Members

Oh yes, those wonderful family members. We often call them PIA! (translation, if needed --pain in the a**):chuckle
  4. Anterior lips and future deliveries

A small comment on the incision and where it is. Remember--the incision that is important is that of the uterus. Some docs make a vertical skin incision, and a low cervial uterine incision (don't ask me why--I see no rhyme or reason) So, if y9ou se...
  5. Funny OB things people say

As an OB nurse who is retired for MANY--TOO MANY years, thank you for all the laughs. I would like to add "upper dermal" to the list. I'm sure there are many others I could add, but my memory is not what it used to be. :chuckle:chuckle
  6. Stirrups?

Good grief! I've been out of OB for about 8 years, and hadn't used stirrups for several years before that. I had worked in several different hospitals, and with "young" and "old" docs as well as midwives. I guess that we are just more modern aroun...
  7. What age do you plan to retire?

:cry:I am quasi retired for 3 years, and take my word for it. It ain't what it's cracked up to be!!!!!!!:zzzzz:down::no::vlin::anbd::anbd::grn:----I can't find any more smilies that apply to my feelings about retirement!
  8. My boss is stealing narcotics......

Has anyone contacted the federasl drug agents? I have been told that this is by federal law. If the management does not do this, you are obligated to do so, as you identified the missing drug. :innerconf
  9. Depression...

    I. too, have depression. I've probably been depressed since childhood. I had a dear NM who took me into her office and asked me to get help. She knew me well and realized that I was at the bottom of a big black abyss that was sucking me deeper. She...
  10. Possibly Abused Young Girl

I would rather overreact a hundred times than not act and be wrong. You may have saved her from this, and at least someone cares about her. :redbeathe Doesn't sound like the "dad"does:(
  11. Bipolar nursing student

I have a friend who is a family practice MD. She was dx as bipolar shortly after opening her practice. She has organized a support group in Denver that is very helpful. She also has a website that you might find useful -- beyondbipolar.com -- You ar...
  12. What kind of LTC resident will you be?

Not only do I have "DNR" tattooed on my sternum, but I have "no IV'S" on my anticubitals, "no central lines" on my clavicals, "no tubes" on my belly, and "exit only" on my rectum! Otherwise, I will be the sweetest lady---till no one is looking!
  13. Diagnoses you never thought you'd see?

Having worked labor and delivery for many years, I have seen many anomolies. We had a cyclops (single eye in forhead) and a mermaid (different hospitals!) Thank God we had so very many healthy kids.
  14. Nurses Wanted

Then there is the other side. When you make a difference in someone's life. When you are the one that notices a change of condition. When a patient or family member thanks you for your help. When you are recognized in a store by a family member or...
  15. new corporation investigating health care workers

I also was "bitten " by one of these companies. According to their report, I am an LPN (I have neve been an LPN
  16. refresher

You might try a local junior college. Most of them offer some sort of nursing refresher, and their classes are quite comprehensive. I recently took one, and found it very informative. Good luck.
  17. Bradley method?

I worked "with" Dr Bradley for several years. His method is similar to LaMaze, but he not only discourages medication during labor, he forbids it. He became livid if a patient asked for medication, let alone made any noise that might signify discom...
  18. Need Help FAST Please. RE: Inappropriate discharge

I recently completed a course for ombudsman. I remember that this was covered under the heading of Resident Rights. The FEDERAL law states that, in order to remove a resident in a LTC facility, the resident and the resident's family/POA must receiv...
  19. near death experience

I had a near death experience as a child. I was about 7 or 8 yoa, and wading in a lake that had been a gravel pit. I "walked off the edge" and suddenly was in deep water. I couldn't swim, and began to fight to keep above the water. After a short t...
  20. Night Shift and Phone Calls from Family - Vent

When I moved 1000 miles from family, and the folks were not too well, I couldn't sleep with the phone turned off, as I was afraid I would miss something. The best investment I made was an answering machine. I could turn off my phone, and be sure th...
  21. help getting liablity insurance

I had the same problem. NSO and Marsch denied me coverage as did several other companies. I had one complaint made to the BON, and was unable to fulfill the required 2 years of OB experience, as I couldn't find a job in OB. I was even certified in i...
  22. You Know You're an Old(er) Nurse If . . .

State boards---we spent 2 days in Chicago to take the five tests. We were lucky, as we were the first nurses to take multiple choice tests. The nurses that graduated before us wrote essay questions!! In addition to the challenge of writing them, i...
  23. my first time seeing a dad almost pass out

In my many years spent attending moms and dads in the OB dept, I've seen many dads and other family members "lose it", but the one I remember the most was the fellow who wanted to watch while I put in the IV. After all, he was a paramedic and did th...
  24. Nursing home or not?

Although I don't have personal experience with a hip relacement, I do have experience with a very severe fractured ankle. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to use a local LTC/rehab facility. I was so very well looked after, and fed. And, more...
  25. To AWHONN or not to AWHONN?

I highly recommend AWHONN. I joined many years ago when it first organized as NAACOG. I have never felt that I wasted my money or regretted being a member. The earlier comment regarding AWHONN standards is quite true. If one needs to testify in co...
