  1. L&D,Nursery Nurse and Post-Partum

I'd talk to your manager and try to work out a plan about you coming in to orient to babies when you're off or handing off the charge nurse role to another nurse when a nursery-needing baby is born. I'm looking at a similar situation except that I've...
  2. Labor Nurses Floating to Med Surg.....

OB nurses at my hospital occasionally float to med-surg- but if we need to be "retrievable" then we don't take a patient load or work with anyone who is ill. So in essence we're acting as well paid nurse's aides or unit secretaries.
  3. rotating postpartum, nursery, and l&d

I work at a small rural hospital. We do all three, although naturally everyone has preferences and strengths.
  4. Situation at work...

My big SVE discrepancy story is kind of funny. I was doing an internship in L&D during my senior year of nursing school. I did an SVE, called it 5 and then my preceptor checked behind me. She looked disappointed and told me she was only 1cm. ...
  5. First week on the job

Well, I can't seem to edit my post- but I linked the wrong book! :imbar Lol! Here's the book I actually have... http://www.amazon.com/Intrapartum-Management-Modules-Perinatal-Education/dp/078178168X/ref=pd_sim_b_2/105-1592261-3762856
  6. How much do you make as an RN in Labor and Delivery where you work?

I'm in a small town in Northern CA. New grads start at $26/hr, with $3/hr differential for nights, no weekend differential. This is the same for all departments- perhaps surgery is more now that I think about it though.
  7. Protocols for birthing tubs?

This is how we do it too, except that a support person can stay with the pt, it doesn't have to be the nurse constantly. The support person can climb in the tub too if they like. We have awesome water-proof tele monitoring, so if the monitor is pic...
  8. First week on the job

Your nurse manager didn't give you a course of study or any materials? I'm new as well- I think the book I was given is "Intrapartum modules" by Lippincott. I like it so far- although I haven't made it through the whole book yet. http://www.amazon.co...
  9. Who assigns APGARs?

RNs do APGARs at my hospital- unless the ped is there. Even then, they ask the nurses...
  10. going from graduation to L&D

I'm a new grad hired into L&D with midwifery experience and I was told (several times actually!) by my manager that the midwifery experience is why she hired me! ETA: Is there any need for a specific language where you live? I speak Spanish and ...
  11. Non-degree RN license issues...

No, you're an RN and it doesn't really make a difference. It might make a difference if you don't finish your degree and then attempt to move to another state other than California. Hope that helps! Jennifer (who just passed the NCLEX during my last...
  12. Is 75 a good thing or a bad thing?

I just found out an hour ago- I passed! :) :) Hope good things have happened for all of you too!
  13. Is 75 a good thing or a bad thing?

I'm still waiting for results! Any word for anyone else?
  14. Is 75 a good thing or a bad thing?

Any updates yet?? I've got my fingers crossed for all of you!
  15. THE REAl DEAL!!

My friend is a new grad at SF General- she started at $50/hr with no benefits. She said she'll go down to $42/hr when/if offered a position with benefits.
  16. anyone out there waiting for their NCLEX-RN results?

I tested on 2/22- shut off at 75. Waiting sucks.
  17. Is 75 a good thing or a bad thing?

I tested this morning- I was done in under an hour with 75 questions. Sigh. No medication calculations, lots of teaching and priority, a few SATA. Now the waiting. Bleg.
  18. taking NCLEX-RN as non-graduate

I'm in CA and we're allowed to do this with our BSN program. I believe it works out that our community semester is required for the BSN, but not for the RN. So we can take the NCLEX pre-graduation if we want. I called the BRN to find out about the ...
  19. on call pay?

I'm an aide on med-surg. We get $4.00/hr for 6 hours, then we're off the hook. The aides work 8 hr shifts. I'm stunned that on-call pay is so low for some folks! Yikes!
  20. does the FOB really get cursed out????

I had a teen delivering a term baby who was so nasty and vile to the FOB that he left the room for a bit while she was pushing. She also swatted at him with a towel and snapped at everyone- except for the nurses!!! She seemed much sweeter the next...
  21. Spacenurse, I'm so glad you replied! I feel exactly the same way! Everyone deserves to be safe and warm, with decent healthcare and enough food to eat. Everyone. Even drug addicts.
  22. Nurse tracking devices

I'm currently a student, and I work at a local hospital as an aide. The hospital I work at does not use these devices. I did do clinicals last semester at a hospital that used them, and I LOVED them! It was great to be able to find "my" nurse witho...
  23. What is your unit's Uniform Policy

We all wear scrubs- whatever color/pattern we choose. Housekeeping does as well, as does dietary. It is hard to tell who is who.
  24. Can I do this???

Well Bethany, you're really the only person who can answer that question! Can you do it? Would you be able to provide services to folks who didn't share your exact philosophy? Would you be able to help women achieve the births that they dream of- ...
  25. Ob/pedi Classes!!! Info Please!!!

My ob/peds class was a breeze and so much fun! This is exactly why I went to nursing school! I loved it and am rather sorry it's over- I'm starting psych and geri next week. No tips or hints, just study hard and pay attention, make sure you're *try...
