  1. Would you call in because you didn't get any sleep?

Yes, I'd call in sick UNLESS I knew that my absence was going to put a strain on the rest of the staff because it was a holiday such as Christmas and my being there tired would pose less of a danger than my not being there at all. Somehow I got my se...
  2. Sopranos Finale - How well was nursing portrayed?

Who cares? I found the ending so disappointing. I did notice though that in spite of being on a respirator, You didn't hear a sound and you didn't see Silvio's chest move. :bluecry1:
  3. Would you call in because you didn't get any sleep?

:monkeydance: I'm responding to the poll about calling in sick for lack of sleep. I absolutely would call in. A sleep-deprived nurse is a danger to her patients. Having said that, I'd try to rectify the reason for not sleeping.
  4. where do old nurses go?

I've had such a good laugh over the replies to the nursing home idea. However I've found some of the replies bitter sweet. We all seem to have worked very hard with sometimes very little recognition or rewards. How pitiful is that?
  5. where do old nurses go?

This thing has taken on a life of it's own !!!!!!! I have some good pills - Vicodan, zoloft, xanax. No need for any booze, but the houseboy sounds fabulous !!!!!!!!!!!!
  6. where do old nurses go?

I just had another thought. Be a nit picker. Seriously, with lice becoming more and more prevalent there are people who have started a business going to peoples' houses, treating anybody who has lice/nits. Some people will even clean the house and ca...
  7. where do old nurses go?

I'm 63 and still going strong !!!!!!!! I'm a school Nurse and have found this to be rewarding and not too hard on the bod. Be prepared though for some, not all, teachers to believe that you sit on your duff all day doing nothing. I'd love some of my ...
  8. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

hi everybody. my name is sylvia and i'm a school nurse. is there anybody out there who's as disgusted as i am about how we are treated and how little our salaries are? my custodian earns more than i do and gets a uniform allowance to boot. teachers r...
  9. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

This is for edgwow. I really admire you for going back to school @39, not that that is old by any standard. I would suggest that you move to Plainview, NY as we don't need certification in school nursing. Anybody who does apply to be a sub. (forget a...
  10. Nurses are NOT portrayed in a positive way. I don't watch any medical shows. I'm getting up in years and I STILL get comments such as " being a nurse, you must have been a real hottie". How demeaning!!!!! I still find this attitude about nurses bein...
  11. Is there power in the color white?

So nice to see a Mr. Nurse. I personally don't think there is "power in white" It's basically how we comport ourselves and how we expect to be respected. I firmly believe that we teach people how to treat us. If we take guff then people will take adv...
  12. Is there power in the color white?

Thank you Suesquatch for your comment defending us more senior nurses. To whimsieRN, you sound as though you need to get away from the "icky stuff". this is what a lot of nursing is all about. I'm sorry if people are rude to you and it affects the wa...
  13. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

Just to ask a question. Are you a school nurse-teacher? We used to have those but they retired them years ago in favor of having RNs with no teaching certification and hiring a health teacher to obviously teach health.
  14. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

You are certainly lucky !!!!!! I am in the same union as the teachers but we recently negotiated a 3 year contract and the nurses' demands weren't even allowed to be put in front of the board. After 22 years I'm at a salary of less than $50,000. Just...
  15. Is there power in the color white?

:yeah: I personally do not think that white uniforms gives us more power. I do think that it does identify you as a nurse in a hospital setting where everyone is wearing a different color. I was recently hospitalized and the nurses who did wear white...
  16. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

This is in response to classicdame: Unfortunately, the nurses in my school district are represented by the teachers unit. We recently negotiated a new contract and even though we had a nurse on the negotiating team, she was told NOT to put anything f...
  17. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

LPN90. You must have been a fly on the wall in my office !!!!!!! You are so correct about the "newbies" being the worst people to deal with. You are so on the mark when you say that these teachers need to tell a "frequent flyer" that they need to sta...
  18. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

In response to TXnurse. I too have given my teachers a list of what I do, but somehow it doesn't get through to them that I need to go to the bathroom or lunch. If I'm not in my office every instant of the day, I've been reported as not being availab...
  19. Salary Or Lack Thereof !!!!!!!!

In response to your question, School nursing is a really fabulous job. Having said that, if you're looking for a job that pays well, forget it. I live and work in an affluent community where you would think that I'd be payed very well, NOT. My advice...

to kit3375. you will get over this. don't let this spoil the rest of your career. this will make you all the more careful. it will always remain in the back of your mind, which is where it should rest. i'm sure that you'll go on to be a great nurse b...
  21. Is there power in the color white?

i'm from the "old school". i was recently in the hospital and found it difficult to differentiate between an aide, a technician or whomever. i was relieved that i no longer needed to wear a cap as it always seemed to get in the way of the curtains an...
  22. Have you ever made a med error?

yes i have. i gave digoxin to a patient who was to have an angioplasty and the dig. was on "hold". fortunately i reported this quickly and there was no harm done. i was in the hospital recently and was the recipient of three med errors one of which c...
  23. This is a VENTING Post!

I read your vent. I can't believe that he couldn't turn on a thermometer. This is such a simple piece of equipment, what on earth is going to happen when he has to use a defibrillator or any other piece of equipment. I wouldn't want to be the patient...
